It is a good impact of computers and data technology and its application on the libraries because of that a method of great amendment is happening in libraries. Modern technology is tending to alter radically the nature of our society and affect the prevailing economic, political and social values and libraries are also in the process. Industrialized countries were the primary to understand that within the context of stock of data, classical approaches concerning storage, retrieval and utilization of the information were no longer adequate and effective which the answer lay in creating fullest use of recent developments in physics, computer, telecommunications and micro-recording etc

Automation of library services and the use of open source software are essential for efficiency and effectiveness and at a minimal cost, too. Library automation benefits both the library staff and the users as it reduces the level of job stress on the staff and enhances remote and timely provision of up-to-date information to the users. This literature based opinion paper majorly aimed to establish the relevance of using open source software in library automation. To achieve this goal, the paper was divided into sub-headings that respectively highlighted the relevance of library automation, spelt out the salient issues to consider in library software selection, discussed the characteristics of OSS that qualify them to be effective library automation software, and enumerated and briefly discussed the various OSS available for integrated library management. Recommendations on the key factors that should be prioritized for the achievement of a successful automation of the library services with the open source software is equally made in the paper. Keywords: Library automation, Open Source Software, Library effectiveness, Software selection criteria

Abstract—The Library automation system help reduce much work need to be done by doing monotonous routine jobs with the help of technologies such as Barcode and RFID. Unila Library as the pioneer of RFID technology implementation in Lampung province face challenge in migration. Unila Library used SLiMS Library Automation System to manage collections, which use mainly barcode to identify collection. RFID uses allow collections to be scanned in gate and warn librarian. Unfortunately, SLiMS doesn't support SIP2 protocol which is needed by RFID devices (gate, kiosk) to function properly. Therefore, a solution must be made to address the migration of data and support SIP2 protocol. ELIB is a library automation software which support SIP2 protocol. So, library automation systems integration which synchronize both database in ELIB and SLiMS to keep up to date data and allow support for SIP2 protocol must be made in the form of middleware. Some of difficulties arise in integration was the development of both library automation systems which require fine tuning everytime update occurs and both systems in active use. Benchmarking is done to find anomaly and disreparancies of data. And, because the integration system is build as middleware, it remain flexible and open to future development. It can be concluded, Library automation systems integration require vigilance and keen observations into minuscule level especially because both systems are so different. Keywords— library, RFID, ELIB, SLIMS, SIP2, middlewar

The study investigated the library automation in Delta State university library. A total of 50 library staff including professional and para–professional librarians were sampled for the study. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The instrument used for the study was the questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count and percentages. The findings from the study revealed that the facilities necessarily for automation services were available. The study also revealed that though the automation facilities were available, the library automation service is not effective. The findings from the study showed internet services and electronic mails as efficiency/skills found among librarians. The finding of the study also indicated that of all the factors that affected library automation sponsorship was the main factor that impeded library automation in the university library. This was followed by improper coordination and lack of funding. The study concluded that as a result of the low performance to discharge automation services effectively to users calls for serious concern on the part of library management as it enhances information service delivery. The study recommended seriousness on the part of library management and decision makers, the creation of an enabling environment for network connectivity and proper planning in the implementation of library automation
