Learning Counterfactual Representations for Estimating Individual Dose-Response Curves
Estimating what would be an individual's potential response to varying levels
of exposure to a treatment is of high practical relevance for several important
fields, such as healthcare, economics and public policy. However, existing
methods for learning to estimate counterfactual outcomes from observational
data are either focused on estimating average dose-response curves, or limited
to settings with only two treatments that do not have an associated dosage
parameter. Here, we present a novel machine-learning approach towards learning
counterfactual representations for estimating individual dose-response curves
for any number of treatments with continuous dosage parameters with neural
networks. Building on the established potential outcomes framework, we
introduce performance metrics, model selection criteria, model architectures,
and open benchmarks for estimating individual dose-response curves. Our
experiments show that the methods developed in this work set a new
state-of-the-art in estimating individual dose-response
Unsupervised Adaptive Re-identification in Open World Dynamic Camera Networks
Person re-identification is an open and challenging problem in computer
vision. Existing approaches have concentrated on either designing the best
feature representation or learning optimal matching metrics in a static setting
where the number of cameras are fixed in a network. Most approaches have
neglected the dynamic and open world nature of the re-identification problem,
where a new camera may be temporarily inserted into an existing system to get
additional information. To address such a novel and very practical problem, we
propose an unsupervised adaptation scheme for re-identification models in a
dynamic camera network. First, we formulate a domain perceptive
re-identification method based on geodesic flow kernel that can effectively
find the best source camera (already installed) to adapt with a newly
introduced target camera, without requiring a very expensive training phase.
Second, we introduce a transitive inference algorithm for re-identification
that can exploit the information from best source camera to improve the
accuracy across other camera pairs in a network of multiple cameras. Extensive
experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach
significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised learning based
alternatives whilst being extremely efficient to compute.Comment: CVPR 2017 Spotligh
EM Algorithms for Weighted-Data Clustering with Application to Audio-Visual Scene Analysis
Data clustering has received a lot of attention and numerous methods,
algorithms and software packages are available. Among these techniques,
parametric finite-mixture models play a central role due to their interesting
mathematical properties and to the existence of maximum-likelihood estimators
based on expectation-maximization (EM). In this paper we propose a new mixture
model that associates a weight with each observed point. We introduce the
weighted-data Gaussian mixture and we derive two EM algorithms. The first one
considers a fixed weight for each observation. The second one treats each
weight as a random variable following a gamma distribution. We propose a model
selection method based on a minimum message length criterion, provide a weight
initialization strategy, and validate the proposed algorithms by comparing them
with several state of the art parametric and non-parametric clustering
techniques. We also demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the
proposed clustering technique in the presence of heterogeneous data, namely

Learning Ground Traversability from Simulations
Mobile ground robots operating on unstructured terrain must predict which
areas of the environment they are able to pass in order to plan feasible paths.
We address traversability estimation as a heightmap classification problem: we
build a convolutional neural network that, given an image representing the
heightmap of a terrain patch, predicts whether the robot will be able to
traverse such patch from left to right. The classifier is trained for a
specific robot model (wheeled, tracked, legged, snake-like) using simulation
data on procedurally generated training terrains; the trained classifier can be
applied to unseen large heightmaps to yield oriented traversability maps, and
then plan traversable paths. We extensively evaluate the approach in simulation
on six real-world elevation datasets, and run a real-robot validation in one
