    Knowledge, Innovation, and Entrepreneurial Systems at HICSS

    This paper presents an overview and history of the knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurial systems (KIES) track and the knowledge and related systems research community at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). This community began as a task force that examined organizational memory in HICSS-27. It has since evolved into a mini-track, a research cluster, and, finally, a full research track that encompasses research knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurial systems. In this paper, we acquaint knowledge system researchers with a research community that has leveraged HICSS to develop a rich history of high-quality scholastic inquiry in the knowledge system, knowledge management, innovation systems, entrepreneurial systems, organizational memory, and organizational learning research areas

    Where is the Wisdom We Have Lost in Technology?

    Wisdom has been at the heart of practical, philosophical, and theological interest since antiquity but is now attracting interdisciplinary scientific interest from academic researchers in diverse disciplines. Practical wisdom is important from the IS perspective because we have built information tools and technologies that can harm or benefit us in various ways and it is important that we understand the implications of these technologies. The purpose of this panel is to start and stimulate conversations with the IS community on a broad array of individual, organizational and societal issues at the intersection of wisdom and technology. The hope is to take the first steps to bring together disparate notions on wisdom in an IS context and to explore new frameworks to advance research in this emerging area representing wisdom-based IS. Broadly, this panel will explore topics relating to extending knowledge management concepts for wisdom; making meaningful distinctions between knowledge, wisdom, ethics, and other related concepts in the context of information systems teaching, research, and practice; the design, management, use, and implications of technologies for consciously discovering, creating, sharing, and supporting wisdom in individuals, organizations, and societies; interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary understanding of the nature of wisdom in a technology-driven world; and mindful living with and connected by technologies for personal, professional, and societal well-being

    A model for describing and maximising Security Knowledge Sharing to enhance security awareness

    Employees play a crucial role in enhancing information security in the workplace, and this requires everyone having the requisite security knowledge and know-how. To maximise knowledge levels, organisations should encourage and facilitate Security Knowledge Sharing (SKS) between employees. To maximise sharing, we need first to understand the mechanisms whereby such sharing takes place and then to encourage and engender such sharing. A study was carried out to test the applicability of Transactive Memory Systems Theory in describing knowledge sharing in this context, which confirmed its applicability in this domain. To encourage security knowledge sharing, the harnessing of Self-Determination Theory was proposed— satisfying employee autonomy, relatedness and competence needs to maximise sharing. Such sharing is required to improve and enhance employee security awareness across organisations. We propose a model to describe the mechanisms for such sharing as well as the means by which it can be encouraged

    Collaborative knowledge creation in electronic mail

    With organisational work increasingly performed by the collaboration of distributed groups, an improved understanding is needed of the co-creation of knowledge in emerging virtual structures. We explore the potential of the ubiquitous organisational tool, electronic mail (e-mail), for supporting collaborative knowledge creation in such settings. This research draws on a case study of knowledge creation occurring in e-mail conversations in a large Australian university and adopts a discourse analysis research approach. We describe a model of collaborative knowledge creation derived from the study and identify a preliminary set of key factors for organisational knowledge tools and their use by groups to support collaborative knowledge creation. The paper also provides insights into the role of e-mail in collaborative knowledge creation, not only in facilitating this process, but in shaping a participatory, multi-perspective, team-based approach to knowledge building. Organisational implications arising from this type of knowledge creation are also discussed in the paper.<br /

    The Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) celebrated its 50th anniversary (HICSS-50) in January, 2017. To mark the occasion and to pay respect to the significant standing of this conference in the global IS community, the Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS) organized a special section on “Celebrating HICSS50: The Past, Present, and Future of HICSS Conference”.     Among Followers and Rebels: Professional Identity and Digitalization of Work

    The digitalization of work practices has changed the conditions for many professions. In this study, we explore the relation between professional identity and digitalization in the workplace. We join the research stream within professional identity research that views identity as a narrative construction, a story that individuals tell themselves and others to tell who they are, in this case in relation to digitalization. The empirical data derive from two different contexts: Nordic primary school teachers and European hoteliers at an international hotel chain. In total, 72 interviews were conducted. The study contributes to existing literature by providing increased knowledge on digitalization of work practices by illustrating different approaches to digitalization of work that extend over a specific profession. Theoretical contributions involve suggesting four ideal types of categorization to explain the approach to digitalization in professional life
