    Public Health in Developing Countries

    Public health entails the use of models, technologies, experience and evidence derived through consumer participation, translational research and population sciences to protect and improve the health of the population. Enhancing public health is of significant importance to the development of a nation, particularly for developing countries where the health care system is underdeveloped, fragile or vulnerable.This book examines progress and challenges with regards to public health in developing countries in two parts: Part 1 “General and Crosscutting Issues in Public Health and Case Studies” and Part 2 “Country-Specific Issues in Public Health.” For example, assuring equity for marginalized indigenous groups and other key populations entails the application of transdisciplinary interventions including legislation, advocacy, financing, empowerment and de-stigmatization. The diverse structural, political, economic, technological, geographical and social landscape of developing countries translates to unique public health challenges, infrastructure and implementation trajectories in addressing issues such as vector-borne diseases and intimate partner violence.This volume will be of interest to researchers, health ministry policy makers, public health professionals and non-governmental organizations whose work entails collaborations with public health systems of developing nations and regions

The need to identify and quantify health risks related to global environmental change is now one of the most important challenges of humankind. Describing spatial (geographic, intra/inter-population) and temporal differences in health risks is an urgent task to understand societies’ vulnerabilities and priorities for interventions better. The Göttingen International Health Network (GIHN) is a research and teaching network in relation to this cross-cutting topic. The book provides a collection of articles which contribute to this issue of overriding importance and presents an overview of the GIHN launch event

    Maternal-child health - interdisciplinary aspects within the perspective of global health

    Maternal-Child Health is one of the greatest challenges the world has to cope with today. Every year, thousands of women, newborns and children die unnecessarily, particularly in resource-poor settings. There is a great disparity caused by food insecurity and hunger, environmental health risks, sanitation challenges, cultural barriers and non-accessibility to diagnosis and treatment. "Maternal-Child Health: Interdisciplinary Aspects within the Perspective of Global Health" addresses these issues. The contributions of this book are based on the ONE HEALTH concept by focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases and to present interdisciplinary views from more than 60 authors who come from 14 countries. The aim is to shape our understanding on Maternal-Child Health Solutions by looking at > agricultural and environmental > economic, social and theological > biomedical and nutritional > clinical human and veterinary as well as > epidemiology and > public health expertise.     Re-emergence of Neglected Tropical Diseases amid the COVID-19 Pandemic : Epidemiology, Transmission, Mitigation Strategies, and Recent Advances in Chemotherapy and Vaccines

    The current re-emergence of neglected tropical diseases (NTD) amid the global COVID-19 pandemic requires increased attention. These include communicable and vector-borne diseases caused by various fungi, bacteria (e.g. tuberculosis), viruses (e.g. dengue, Chikungunya fever, monkeypox, Marburg and Ebola virus disease, poliomyelitis, rabies), and parasites (e.g. filariasis, malaria, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis). Whilst the vast majority of such diseases remain endemic to specific regions of the world (e.g. tropical Africa), some - like those caused by the Ebola virus, the Marburg virus, and more recently the Monkeypox virus - have been reported elsewhere (e.g. Europe and America), forcing public health boards in various countries to take all necessary precautions to control such a spread. The Department for Control of Neglected Tropical Disease was created in 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to tackle NTD. In 2021, the 74th World Health Assembly proposed a 9-year plan (2021-2030) intended to eradicate neglected diseases. Over the past three years, COVID-19 has had a significant impact on socio-economic activities and healthcare systems worldwide. With the WHO recently declaring the global monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, a coordinated effort among high-income and low/middle-income countries is now more than ever recommended to address the threat posed by the worldwide re-emergence of some NTD. There is currently a lack of knowledge on understanding how such diseases are transmitted and what mitigation strategies should be put in place to control their spread. Better availability of diagnostic tests, vaccines, and drugs in affected countries is also required. In this Research Topic, we wish to address how to best tackle the re-emergence of NTD in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This collection welcomes a range of articles including opinion, commentary, systematic reviews, and original research articles on epidemiology, transmission, mitigation strategies, and recent advances in chemotherapy and vaccines for these NTD

    Development of a nanobody-based amperometric immunocapturing assay for sensitive and specific detection of Toxocara canis excretory-secretory antigen

    Introduction Human Toxocariasis (HT) is a zoonosis that, despite of its wide distribution around the world, remains poorly diagnosed. The identification of specific IgG immunoglobulins against the Toxocara canis Excretory-Secretory antigen (TES), a mix of glycoproteins that the parasite releases during its migration to the target organs in infected patients, is currently the only laboratory tool to detect the disease. The main drawbacks of this test are the inability to distinguish past and active infections together with lack of specificity. These factors seriously hamper the diagnosis, follow-up and control of the disease. Aim To develop an amperometric immunocapturing diagnostic assay based on single domain immunoglobulins from camelids (nanobodies) for specific and sensitive detection of TES. Methods After immunization of an alpaca (Vicugna pacos) with TES, RNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes was used as template for cDNA amplification with oligo dT primers and library construction. Isolation and screening of TES-specific nanobodies were carried out by biopanning and the resulting nanobodies were expressed in Escherichia coli. Two-epitopes amperometric immunocapturing assay was designed using paramagnetic beads coated with streptavidin and bivalent nanobodies. Detection of the system was carried out with nanobodies chemically coupled to horseradish peroxidase. The reaction was measured by amperometry and the limit of detection (LOD) was compared to conventional sandwich ELISA. Results We obtained three nanobodies that specifically recognize TES with no-cross reactivity to antigens of Ascaris lumbricoides and A. suum. The LOD of the assay using PBST20 0.05% as diluent was 100 pg/ml, 10 times more sensitive than sandwich ELISA. Conclusion Sensitive and specific detection of TES for discrimination of active and past infections is one of the most difficult challenges of T. canis diagnosis. The main advantage of our system is the use of two different nanobodies that specifically recognize two different epitopes in TES with a highly sensitive and straightforward readout. Considering that the amounts of TES available for detection in clinical samples are in the range of picograms or a few nanograms maximum, the LOD found in our experiments suggests that the test is potentially useful for the detection of clinically relevant cases of HT
