    An Exploratory Study Investigating Data Quality in the Healthcare Industry: What are the Implicatons for Daya Warehousing?

    Maintaining quality data and information challenges today’s organizations, and is essential to good decisionmaking and competitive advantage. The purpose of this study is to understand the dimensions of data quality and to learn how managers perceive them. The 20 dimensions of data quality posited by Wang and Strong were used in this study. The relative importance of those dimensions by healthcare industry managers was assessed. Study findings indicate that all 20 of Wang and Strong’s data quality descriptive dimensions are important to the healthcare industry. Additionally, data from this exploratory research seems to suggest that there may not be a “one size fits all” model for data quality

    Analysis of Interaction between Business Intelligence and SMEs: Learn from Each Other

    : Business Intelligence (BI) and SMEs are two distinctive research domains but greater interaction between these two entities can offer the effective learn from each other. This interaction has been consider in conducting the changing environment. This interaction does only strengthen individual insights of BI and SMEs, it contributes to the business environmental performance. Although research on BI and SMEs is vast to date, limited focus was given on learning aspect between BI and SMEs. Therefore, this study is aimed to analyse literature and explore an integrated view of literature analysed on how BI and SMEs learn from each other and contributes to the business environmental performance. A qualitative content analysis was conducted for the procedure, which considers 43 articles for data source. Findings of the literature review suggest enhancing capability of SMEs and new innovation of BI, which may affect each other. Findings of this study may become useful for further research in terms of BI implementation success

    Business intelligence for sustainable competitive advantage: the case of telecommunications companies in Malaysia

    The concept of Business Intelligence (BI) as an essential competitive tool has been widely emphasized in the strategic management literature. Yet the sustainability of the firms’ competitive advantage provided by BI capability is not well explained. To fill this gap, this study attempts to develop a model for successful BI deployment and empirically examines the association between BI deployment and sustainable competitive advantage.Taking the telecommunications industry in Malaysia as a case example, the research particularly focuses on the influencing perceptions held by telecommunications decision makers and executives on factors that impact successful BI deployment. The research further investigates the relationship between successful BI deployment and sustainable competitive advantage of the telecommunications organizations. Another important aim of this study is to determine the effect of moderating factors such as organization culture, business strategy and use of BI tools on BI deployment and the sustainability of firm’s competitive advantage.This research uses combination of theoretical foundation of resource-based theory and diffusion of innovation theory to examine BI success and its relationship with firm’s sustainability. The research adopts the positivist paradigm and a two-phase sequential mixed method consisting of qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed. A tentative research model is developed first based on extensive literature review. Qualitative field study then is carried out to fine tune the initial research model. Findings from the qualitative method are also used to develop measures and instruments for the next phase of quantitative method. A survey is carried out with sample of business analysts and decision makers in telecommunications firms and is analyzed by Partial Least Square-based Structural Equation Modeling.The findings revealed that some internal resources of the organizations such as BI governance and the perceptions of BI’s characteristics influence the successful deployment of BI. Organizations that practice good BI governance with strong moral and financial support from upper management will have better chance in realizing their dreams of having successful BI initiatives in place. The scope of BI governance includes providing sufficient support and commitment in BI funding and implementation, laying out proper BI infrastructure and staffing and establishing a corporate-wide policy and procedures regarding BI. The perceptions about the characteristics of BI such as its relative advantage, complexity, compatibility and observability are also significant in ensuring BI success. It thus implied that the executives’ positive perceptions towards BI initiatives are deemed necessary. Moreover, the most important results of this study indicated that with BI successfully deployed, executives would use the knowledge provided for their necessary actions in sustaining the organizations’ competitive advantage in terms of economics, social and environmental issues.The BI model well explained how BI was deployed in Malaysian telecommunications companies. This study thus contributes significantly to the existing literature that will assist future BI researchers especially in achieving sustainable competitive advantage. In particular, the model will help practitioners to consider the resources that they are likely to consider when deploying BI. Finally, the applications of this study can be extended through further adaptation in other industries and various geographic contexts

    The role of organisational culture during the implementation of internal succession planning within Malaysian research universities

    Succession planning is not new to academia and many institutions have supported these programs for years. Few, however, have adopted formal succession planning strategies that are both strategic and deliberate and encompass the full spectrum of succession planning activities. However, less is understood about the role of culture on succession planning within public universities in Malaysia. Nevertheless; there is an absence of a comprehensive conceptual model of the culture-succession relationship in the literature that includes the impact of moderators such as national culture. A mixed mode design was adopted by the study where qualitative data was first collected, analyzed and then used to develop a survey instrument for the quantitative phase of the study. The study surveyed 375 academic staff of the five research universities in Malaysia, and the results were analyzed using the IBM SPSS for Windows and PLS-SEM. A structural model was built to identify the relationship between the organisational culture and succession planning and the moderating effect of the national culture in public research universities. The study's findings showed that succession planning is still new to public universities in Malaysia and training and development are still unstructured. Although there was a positive and significant relationship between organisational culture and succession planning, whereas, findings suggested national culture showed a moderating effect on the relationship of organisational culture and succession planning. The model can help to analyze organisational culture in order to change the Malaysian public universities’ strategy to implement succession planning

    Maximising performance gains from cooperative marketing: understanding the role of environmental contexts

    Cooperative marketing strategies have the potential to make an enduring contribution to business performance and are among the strategic responses that a firm could consider when faced with environmental challenges. The focus of this study is to determine the effect of cooperative marketing strategies on organisational performance. Such organisational performance is investigated as being contingent on the use of cooperative marketing under given internal and external environmental contexts. That is, this study focuses on the performance outcomes associated with cooperative marketing strategies and attempts to identify environmental contexts under which cooperative marketing strategies are best implemented. Based on empirical analysis, results indicate that the higher the incidence of cooperative marketing strategy implementation, the higher perceived alliance performance outcomes. The perceived alliance performance benefits however were increased in given environmental contexts. Performance was positive as a result of co-marketing where there were regional and industry factors at play. That is, performance outcomes resulted when there were higher levels of co-marketing and when there was good quality infrastructure and under industry conditions when there was high entry requirements, high competitive intensity and high levels of environmental capacity. Managerial implications and future directions for research are also provided in the paper

    Validating a Data Quality Framework in Engineering Asset Management

    Data Quality (DQ) has been an acknowledged issue for a long time. Several researchers have indicated that maintaining the quality of data is often acknowledged as problematic, but is also seen as critical to effective decision-making in engineering asset management (AM). The study presents an AM specific DQ framework, which aims to provide a comprehensive structure for understanding, identifying AM DQ problems in an organised way. The framework was examined in a preliminary case study of two large Australian engineering organisations. The empirical findings from the research were used to validate the proposed AM DQ framework. As AM data and informational needs are very different to a typical business environment, a gap exists in the availability of DQ solutions for engineering asset management. Thus there is a need for the development of DQ solutions for engineering asset management

    Do Enterprise Systems Enable Supply Chain Integration?

    Features of ERP systems such as standardized business processes, data integrity, real-time availability, visibility and processing capability of information are expected to create an excellent backdrop for embarking on integration with external partners in the supply chain. This paper reports on the enabling role of ERP systems in achieving supply chain integration from an interpretive case study analysis. Study observed that the organization is slow in embarking on changes to the inter-enterprise processes and not taking full advantage of the high potential. Reasons noted for constraining role of ERP systems in achieving an effective supply chain integration are changes in power and organizational structures, inadequate integration of internal processes, limited flexibility of processes, lack of decision support capability of the ERP system, and general inertia for further changes consequent to ERP implementation. In addition other factors such as supply chain partners inability to take a holistic view, complexity of developing technology interfaces, industry characteristics, and lack of information technology sophistication of the smaller partners are also limiting the potential
