Fundamental Limits of Caching with Secure Delivery
Caching is emerging as a vital tool for alleviating the severe capacity
crunch in modern content-centric wireless networks. The main idea behind
caching is to store parts of popular content in end-users' memory and leverage
the locally stored content to reduce peak data rates. By jointly designing
content placement and delivery mechanisms, recent works have shown order-wise
reduction in transmission rates in contrast to traditional methods. In this
work, we consider the secure caching problem with the additional goal of
minimizing information leakage to an external wiretapper. The fundamental cache
memory vs. transmission rate trade-off for the secure caching problem is
characterized. Rather surprisingly, these results show that security can be
introduced at a negligible cost, particularly for large number of files and
users. It is also shown that the rate achieved by the proposed caching scheme
with secure delivery is within a constant multiplicative factor from the
information-theoretic optimal rate for almost all parameter values of practical
interest
Authenticated tree parity machine key exchange
The synchronisation of Tree Parity Machines (TPMs), has proven to provide a
valuable alternative concept for secure symmetric key exchange. Yet, from a
cryptographer's point of view, authentication is at least as important as a
secure exchange of keys. Adding an authentication via hashing e.g. is
straightforward but with no relation to Neural Cryptography. We consequently
formulate an authenticated key exchange within this concept. Another
alternative, integrating a Zero-Knowledge protocol into the synchronisation, is
also presented. A Man-In-The-Middle attack and even all currently known
attacks, that are based on using identically structured TPMs and
synchronisation as well, can so be averted. This in turn has practical
consequences on using the trajectory in weight space. Both suggestions have the
advantage of not affecting the previously observed physics of this interacting

Towards secure & robust PNT for automated systems
This dissertation makes four contributions in support of secure and robust position, navigation, and timing (PNT) for automated systems. The first two relate to PNT security while the latter two address robust positioning for automated ground vehicles.
The first contribution is a fundamental theory for provably-secure clock synchronization between two agents in a distributed automated system. All one-way synchronization protocols, such as those based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), are shown to be vulnerable to man-in-the-middle delay attacks. This contribution is the first to identify the necessary and sufficient conditions for provably secure clock synchronization.
The second contribution, also related to PNT security, is a three-year study of the world-wide GPS interference landscape based on data from a dual-frequency GNSS receiver operating continuously on the International Space Station (ISS). This work is the first publicly-reported space-based survey of GNSS interference, and unveils previously-unreported GNSS interference activity.
The third contribution is a novel ground vehicle positioning technique that is robust to GNSS signal blockage, poor lighting conditions, and adverse weather events such as heavy rain and dense fog. The technique relies on sensors that are commonly available on automated vehicles and are insensitive to lighting and inclement weather: automotive radar, low-cost inertial measurement units (IMUs), and GNSS. Remarkably, it is shown that, given a prior radar map, the proposed technique operating on data from off-the-shelf all-weather automotive sensors can maintain sub-50-cm horizontal position accuracy during 60 min of GNSS-denied driving in downtown Austin, TX.
This dissertation’s final contribution is an analysis and demonstration of the feasibility of crowd-sourced digital mapping for automated vehicles. Localization techniques, such as the one described in the previous contribution, rely on such digital maps for accuracy and robustness. A key enabler for large-scale up-to-date maps is enlisting the help of the very consumer vehicles that need the map to build and update it. A method for fusing multi-session vision data into a unified digital map is developed. The asymptotic limit of such a map’s globally-referenced position accuracy is explored for the case in which the mapping agents rely on low-cost GNSS receivers performing standard code-phase-based navigation. Experimental validation along a semi-urban route shows that low-cost consumer vehicles incrementally tighten the accuracy of the jointly-optimized digital map over time enough to support sub-lane-level positioning in a global frame of reference.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Large Flocks of Small Birds: on the Minimal Size of Population Protocols
Population protocols are a well established model of distributed computation by mobile finite-state agents with very limited storage. A classical result establishes that population protocols compute exactly predicates definable in Presburger arithmetic. We initiate the study of the minimal amount of memory required to compute a given predicate as a function of its size. We present results on the predicates x >= n for n in N, and more generally on the predicates corresponding to systems of linear inequalities. We show that they can be computed by protocols with O(log n) states (or, more generally, logarithmic in the coefficients of the predicate), and that, surprisingly, some families of predicates can be computed by protocols with O(log log n) states. dissertationWireless communications pervade all avenues of modern life. The rapid expansion of wireless services has increased the need for transmission schemes that are more spectrally efficient. Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) systems attempt to address this need by building a network where the spectrum is used opportunistically by all users based on local and regional measurements of its availability. One of the principal requirements in DSA systems is to initialize and maintain a control channel to link the nodes together. This should be done even before a complete spectral usage map is available. Additionally, with more users accessing the spectrum, it is important to maintain a stable link in the presence of significant interference in emergency first-responders, rescue, and defense applications. In this thesis, a new multicarrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) technique based on filter banks is presented. The new technique is called filter bank multicarrier spread spectrum (FB-MC-SS). A detailed theory of the underlying properties of this signal are given, with emphasis on the properties that lend themselves to synchronization at the receiver. Proposed algorithms for synchronization, channel estimation, and detection are implemented on a software-defined radio platform to complete an FB-MC-SS transceiver and to prove the practicality of the technique. FB-MC-SS is shown through physical experimentation to be significantly more robust to partial band interference compared to direct sequence spread spectrum. With a higher power interfering signal occupying 90% of its band, FB-MC-SS maintains a low bit error rate. Under the same interference conditions, DS-SS fails completely. This experimentation leads to a theoretical analysis that shows in a frequency selective channel with additive white noise, the FB-MC-SS system has performance that equals that obtained by a DS-SS system employing an optimal rake receiver. This thesis contains a detailed chapter on implementation and design, including lessons learned while prototyping the system.
