    Every four years, our presidential candidates work hard to convince us that they have the best plan to keep us safe, prosperous, and well-educated. While economic challenges have recently taken center stage in the presidential election, education is still a critically important issue to OEP and its constituents. Here, we provide a summary of the views of each candidate on key issues and hope that this information is useful to our readers. In this brief, the OEP does not endorse one candidate over the other.     Governmental Funding of K-12 Arts Programs

    Among the significant political debates of our time is how to dedicate resources to different programs, and what types of ideas will be funded and subsidized by the government. Unfortunately, even the United States is not a nation of unlimited resources. In general, arts programs are one of the first to be cut from schools, as they are not seen to be equal to math, reading, or even sports. However, arts programs could be an integral part of the successes of the elementary, middle, and high school student. In my thesis, I will explore the differences between students who have access to government-funded school art programs and students who do not have access to programs like these. Specifically, I will present evidence that supports the argument that K-12 schools should have arts programs, and that those programs should be funded by the state or national government. Research data will include measurable milestones, such as grade point average, college placement, and test scores. The research may also explore behavioral patterns, if I can find a measurable discrepancy, such as disciplinary patterns in students who participate in arts programs compared to students who do not or cannot

    In a decade, virtual education in its contemporary form of asynchronous, computer-mediated interaction between a teacher and students over the Internet has grown from a novelty to an established mode of education that may provide all or part of formal schooling for nearly one in every 50 students in the US. In a non-random 2007 survey of school districts, as many as three out of every four public K-12 school districts responding reported offering full or partial online courses.There can be little question that virtual courses in certain areas (e.g., math, English, social studies) produce tested achievement results on a par with those of their conventionally taught counterparts. Nor is it debatable that more complex areas of the curriculum (e.g., the arts) are beyond the reach of these new arrangements. Nevertheless, the rapid growth of this new form of schooling raises questions of cost, funding, and variable quality that require the immediateattention of policymakers

    The issue of bullying in K-12 schools usually brings images of students to mind, but a recent quantitative study of a sample from K-12 school personnel in Michigan showed that 27.8% of adults in the K-12 workplace consider themselves the target of an adult bully. This study calls for school leadership to recognize and proactively address the issue of workplace bullying in K-12 schools through policy, procedures, training, prevention, enforcement, and positive resolution to provide a safe, non-threatening environment in which to work and learn

    Electrochemical Attachment of Motile Bacterial Cells to Gold

    Selective attachment of Escherichia coli K-12 bacterial cells to charged gold surfaces was demonstrated. Electrostatic binding of E. coli K-12 bacterial cells to positively charged surfaces was observed starting at +750 mV. The binding of E. coli K-12 cells to positively charged gold surfaces is proposed to occur due to long-range electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged O-chain of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) molecules protruding the bacterial cell body and the electrode surface. Removing LPS alters the cellular surface charge and results in cellular attachment to negatively charged surfaces. Thus, applying an electrical potential allows for the direct, real time detection of live, dead or damaged bacterial cells. The attachment of E. coli K-12 bacterial cells to surfaces with an applied potential substantiates the hypothesis that an electrostatic interaction is responsible for the binding of bacterial cells to positively charged molecular assemblies on surfaces used for building bacterial microarrays
