    A galaxy of wor(l)ds: the translation of fictive vernacular in the Star Wars transmedia narrative in Brazil

Diante desse contexto, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo descrever as práticas tradutórias adotadas para lidar com materiais de Star Wars. Considerando que uma narrativa transmídia é um todo composto formado pela expansão narrativa em múltiplos episódios em diferentes plataformas midiáticas, a presente pesquisa visa, em última instância, investigar as práticas de tradução adotadas e seus impactos para a integridade dessa narrativa transmídia no Brasil. A investigação das práticas de tradução centra-se no dispositivo narrativo baseado na linguagem verbal denominado Vernáculo Fictício, um conceito proposto nesta tese. Os Estudos Descritivos da Tradução ofereceram as bases teóricas para analisar os pares selecionados de textos fontes e suas traduções. Os Estudos de Tradução com base em Corpus fornecem os procedimentos e ferramentas teóricas e metodológicas para conduzir a análise dos dados, para cujo fim foi criado um corpus paralelo computadorizado. O corpus paralelo é composto por pares alinhados de textos fontes e traduções nas mídias livro, quadrinho e filme (apenas os componentes verbais das duas últimas mídias são incluídos no corpus paralelo). Ele é composto por dois pares por mídia, totalizando seis títulos e doze textos. A análise revela duas tendências principais nas práticas adotadas para traduzir o Vernáculo Fictício no corpus. A primeira tendência envolve imprimir a composição de itens fictícios fonte nos textos de chegada. A segunda diz respeito ao aproveitamento dos recursos da língua-alvo para traduzir itens fictícios, mesmo às custas de, ocasionalmente, anular sua função de criação de mundo.Abstract: With the recent change in the publication scenario of materials from the Star Wars saga in Brazil (upon the change of intellectual property holder in 2012), the franchise has become a transmedia narrative in the country. In view of this context, the present research aims to describe the translation practices adopted to deal with Star Wars materials. Considering that a transmedia narrative is a composite whole formed by narrative expansion across multiples instalments in different media platforms, the present research ultimately aims to investigate the adopted translation practices and their impact on the wholeness of the transmedia narrative in Brazil. The investigation of translation practices focuses on the language-based narrative device called Fictive Vernacular, a concept developed in this thesis. Descriptive Translation Studies offered the theoretical foundations to analyse the selected pairs of source and translated texts. Corpus-based Translation Studies provide the theoretical and methodological procedures and tools to conduct the data analysis, for which end a computerised parallel corpus was created. The parallel corpus is composed of aligned pairs of source and target books, comics and films (only the verbal components of the last two are included in the parallel corpus). It comprises of two pairs per media, adding up to six instalments and twelve texts in total. Analysis reveals two main tendencies in the practices of translating the Fictive Vernacular in the corpus. The first tendency involves imprinting the makeup of source fictive items into the target texts. The second concerns drawing on the resources of the target language to render fictive items, even at the expense of occasionally irrupting their world-building function

    Non-Being and Memory: A Critique of Pure Difference in Derrida and Deleuze

    The psychology philosophy split has restricted viable readings of today\u27s psychological research. My project (within the philosophy of psychology) is to provide these readings. Specifically, in this dissertation I analyze the data and the interpretations of a large number of contemporary memory research articles. I use these articles to support my claim that Immanuel Kant misunderstood what in the Critique of Pure Reason he labeled affinity. Further, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze inherit this Kantian misunderstanding by way of G.W.F. Hegel\u27s attempt to eliminate it. Put another way, the component in question is that which grounds the post-structuralist justification for pure difference, and the wider context of this discussion is Plato\u27s problem of non-being. That is, Kant\u27s reading of affinity and Derrida\u27s and Deleuze\u27s respective readings of pure difference all function as failed attempts to solve the problem of non-being. Taking Plato\u27s Parmenides and Sophist as points of departure, I show how each of the above mentioned thinkers, including Aristotle, fails to meet Plato\u27s criteria for, i.e. solve, the problem of non-being. I then use contemporary memory research for the sake of enunciating my own solution to Plato\u27s problem. The critical structure of my discourse is directed at Derrida and Deleuze, then, as a critique of their readings of pure difference, and this is to accentuate the difference between my response to the problem and theirs. Kant\u27s misunderstanding of memory committed him to an ontological filled-duration illusion. On the one hand, my reading of contemporary memory research depicts being as bound by memory. On the other hand, memory\u27s binding is governed by play, i.e. memory as being\u27s play-ground. And, gaps can be noticed by regarding shifting engagements of procedural memory or memory\u27s cycling, though these gaps are often covered over by priming and habitual scripts. Hence, just as these gaps justify calling ontological filled-duration illusory, these gaps also constitute my solution to the problem of non-being. I paraphrase the fruit of solving the problem: Your being is not persisting; it is pulsing. Perhaps the largest impact of my solution is to be found in ethics

    An endocentric language is a language whose verbs are lexically precise and concrete whereas its nouns are abstract and vague. An exocentric language has lexically precise and concrete nouns and abstract verbs. The Germanic languages prove to be endocentric and the Romance languages exocentric. The lexical differences entail differences at other levels as well, linguistic as well as extralinguistic. This multilingual volume contains a selection of papers presented at the two day Italian-Danish linguistic seminar Lingua, cognizione e identità: estensioni della tipologia delle lingue endo- ed esocentriche held at the Italian Department of the University of Florence on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2009. The papers challenge the endo-/exocentric approach at various levels (lexicon, grammar, language infrastructures, socio cultural reflections) with examples from the Romance languages (Italian and French) and the Germanic languages (English, German and Danish)

    Being mathematical : an exploration of epistemological implications of embodied cognition

    In this thesis I explore epistemological implications of embodied cognition in the hope of developing my apprehension of what it means to think mathematically. I allow my understanding of embodied cognition to emerge in stages, early in the piece laying contrasts against which it may be set, infolding elements to the purpose of qualitatively interpreting data as my thesis finds form. I use the language of autopoiesis to frame an understanding of change in the context of an individual’s learning and also within broader constructs, such as in mathematics classrooms. I recognise dualisms and set them aside in an attempt to reread what it means to think mathematically.Research from a variety of fields constitutes one part of my data, the second part being a selection of experiences drawn from mathematics classes I have taught. In balancing the two, I find that an embodied account contributes a means of interpreting mathematical experience wherein received boundaries, such as between you and me, and categories, such as "number", are not globally robust, and intentionality pervades and shapes the worlds we create.The perspective that embodiment affords my apprehension of mathematical thinking is consistent with a formulation in which judgements of what is good are aligned in part with a kind of aesthetic, whereby being moral is founded in innate dispositions. The question of what one is to do with an embodied epistemology is therefore focused on a consideration of how I am to orient myself to teaching mathematics.Throughout all of this, the locus of my attention remains within the classroom, fixed upon the goal of eliciting perspective and on developing skill in interpreting experience; on becoming a tactful teacher, sensitive to the tacit language of the body

    Middlebrow Matters

    Middlebrow is a derogatory word that connotes blandness, mediocrity and a failed aspiration to ‘high’ culture. However, when appropriated as a positive term to denote that wide swathe of literature between the challenging experimentalism of the high and the formulaic drive of the popular, it enables a rethinking of the literary canon from the point of view of what most readers actually read, a criterion curiously absent from dominant definitions of literary value. Since women have long formed a majority of the nation’s reading public, this perspective immediately feminises what has always been a very male canon.
