    Stock allocation in general multi-echelon distribution systems with (R, S) order-up-to-policies

    In this paper we analyze stock allocation policies in general N-echelon distribution systems, where it is allowed to hold stock at all levels in the network. The goal is to achieve differentiated target customer service levels (fill rates). Various allocation rules and accompanying numerical methods that have already been developed for smaller networks are extended and compared in an extensive numerical experiment. We conclude that the extension of Balanced Stock rationing (see Van der Heijden (1996)) is the most accurate method, in particular in cases of relatively high imbalance. If the imbalance is not too high, the extension of Consistent Appropriate Share rationing (see De Kok et al., 1994; Verrijdt and De Kok, 1996) performs good as well

    E-Fulfillment and Multi-Channel Distribution – A Review

    This review addresses the specific supply chain management issues of Internet fulfillment in a multi-channel environment. It provides a systematic overview of managerial planning tasks and reviews corresponding quantitative models. In this way, we aim to enhance the understanding of multi-channel e-fulfillment and to identify gaps between relevant managerial issues and academic literature, thereby indicating directions for future research. One of the recurrent patterns in today’s e-commerce operations is the combination of ‘bricks-and-clicks’, the integration of e-fulfillment into a portfolio of multiple alternative distribution channels. From a supply chain management perspective, multi-channel distribution provides opportunities for serving different customer segments, creating synergies, and exploiting economies of scale. However, in order to successfully exploit these opportunities companies need to master novel challenges. In particular, the design of a multi-channel distribution system requires a constant trade-off between process integration and separation across multiple channels.     Overview and classification of coordination contracts within forward and reverse supply chains

    Among coordination mechanisms, contracts are valuable tools used in both theory and practice to coordinate various supply chains. The focus of this paper is to present an overview of contracts and a classification of coordination contracts and contracting literature in the form of classification schemes. The two criteria used for contract classification, as resulted from contracting literature, are transfer payment contractual incentives and inventory risk sharing.     Multilocation Inventory Systems With Centralized Information.

    The management of multi-echelon inventory systems has been both an important and challenging research area for many years. The rapid advance in information technology and the emphasis on integrated supply chain management have new implications for the successful operation of distribution systems. This research focuses on the study of some fundamental issues related to the operation of a multilocation inventory system with centralized information. First, we do a comparative analysis to evaluate the overall performance of individual versus centralized ordering policies for a multi-store distribution system where centralized information is available. This study integrates the existing research and clarifies one of the fundamental questions facing inventory managers today: whether or not ordering decisions should be centralized. Next, we consider a multi-store distribution system where emergency transshipments are permitted among these stores. Based on some simplifying assumptions, we develop an integrated model with a joint consideration of inventory and transshipment components. An approximately optimal (s, S) policy is obtained through a dynamic programming technique. This ordering policy is then compared with a simplified policy that assumes free and instantaneous transshipments. We also examine the relative performance of base stock policies for a centralized-ordering distribution system. Numerical studies are provided to give general guidelines for use of the policies

    Linear integrated location-inventory models for service parts logistics network design

    We present two integrated network design and inventory control problems in service-parts logistics systems. Such models are complicated due to demand uncertainty and highly nonlinear time-based service level constraints. Exploiting unique properties of the nonlinear constraints, we provide an equivalent linear formulation under part-warehouse service requirements, and an approximate linear formulation under part service requirements. Computational results indicate the superiority of our approach over existing approaches in the literature
