AGRICULTURAL VALUE ADDED: PROSPECTS FOR NORTH DAKOTA
Introduction: This report provides an overview of the important factors affecting investments in agricultural value-added ventures. The introductory section outlines current research on factors important in the location of economic activity. Research applied to specific agricultural value-added ventures, such as food manufacturing and livestock feeding and finishing operations, are discussed. A listing of resources available to entrepreneurs considering value-added investments concludes the introductory section. Following the introductory section are short overviews of industries that already have, or may have, potential for increasing economic activity in the state. All are based on the important foundation of agriculture in the state's economy or upon the natural resource base giving the state a comparative advantage in investments in alternative energy or resource-based recreation.Agribusiness,
A Survey on Deep Learning in Medical Image Analysis
Deep learning algorithms, in particular convolutional networks, have rapidly
become a methodology of choice for analyzing medical images. This paper reviews
the major deep learning concepts pertinent to medical image analysis and
summarizes over 300 contributions to the field, most of which appeared in the
last year. We survey the use of deep learning for image classification, object
detection, segmentation, registration, and other tasks and provide concise
overviews of studies per application area. Open challenges and directions for

B Physics at the Tevatron: Run II and Beyond
This report provides a comprehensive overview of the prospects for B physics
at the Tevatron. The work was carried out during a series of workshops starting
in September 1999. There were four working groups: 1) CP Violation, 2) Rare and
Semileptonic Decays, 3) Mixing and Lifetimes, 4) Production, Fragmentation and
Spectroscopy. The report also includes introductory chapters on theoretical and
experimental tools emphasizing aspects of B physics specific to hadron
colliders, as well as overviews of the CDF, D0, and BTeV detectors, and a

Strategies for Improving Student Abilities to Comprehend Science Textbook Material
Fifty-five supplementary lessons were developed to be used in conjunction with a science text entitled Introductory Physical Science (1976). The lessons consisted of the following comprehension strategies: (a) structured overviews, (b) cloze procedures, (c) locational skill strategies, (d) vocabulary reinforcement strategies, and (e) reading guides. The lessons were prepared to enrich and improve the reading and understanding of the science textbook
Using Textual Summaries to Describe a Set of Products
When customers are faced with the task of making a purchase in an unfamiliar
product domain, it might be useful to provide them with an overview of the
product set to help them understand what they can expect. In this paper we
present and evaluate a method to summarise sets of products in natural
language, focusing on the price range, common product features across the set,
and product features that impact on price. In our study, participants reported
that they found our summaries useful, but we found no evidence that the
summaries influenced the selections made by participants
Browsing while reading: effects of instructional design and learners' prior knowledge
One of the key reasons that multimedia, and particularly hypertext systems, are gaining in importance is that they inspire hopes of optimizing learners' processes of knowledge construction. The present study is concerned with the respective influence of individual learner variables (i.e. particularly domain‐specific prior knowledge) on the use of different design attributes. Thirty‐six university students worked through a hierarchically structured two‐part hypertext about the psychology of memory under two experimental browsing conditions (reduced versus free browsing). Results show that deeper‐level comprehension (i.e. structural knowledge) was predicted by the interaction of experimental condition and prior knowledge, but that simply retaining facts was not. Participants with low prior knowledge performed better on the comprehension test if they had worked on the version with reduced access. Moreover, the version with reduced access helped to reduce feelings of disorientation. The measure of disorientation also appeared to be closely linked with the individual's computer experience, self‐concept of computer ability and subject‐related interest. The main implications for educational practice relate to the design of an adaptive multimedia and hypertext learning system and the successful learning with it
Modeling and inference of multisubject fMRI data
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a
rapidly growing technique for studying the brain in
action. Since its creation [1], [2], cognitive scientists
have been using fMRI to understand how we remember,
manipulate, and act on information in our environment.
Working with magnetic resonance physicists, statisticians, and
engineers, these scientists are pushing the frontiers of knowledge
of how the human brain works.
The design and analysis of single-subject fMRI studies
has been well described. For example, [3], chapters 10
and 11 of [4], and chapters 11 and 14 of [5] all give accessible
overviews of fMRI methods for one subject. In contrast,
while the appropriate manner to analyze a group of
subjects has been the topic of several recent papers, we do
not feel it has been covered well in introductory texts and
review papers. Therefore, in this article, we bring together
old and new work on so-called group modeling of fMRI
data using a consistent notation to make the methods more
accessible and comparable

If Britain votes to leave the EU it will have to negotiate its exit and a new post-withdrawal relationship with the EU, one that will have to be agreed by the remaining 27 EU member states and the European Parliament. What positions might they take in the negotiations? Over the next few weeks the LSE’s BrexitVote blog will be running a series of overviews from each member state and the European Parliament setting out what positions they might take.
