Introduction to Information Science
Review of:"Introduction to Information Science," by David Bawden and Lyn Robinson
Introduction to information science.
This is a review of a book by David Bawden and Lyn Robinson. The book is a second edition, the original having been first published in 2012. The book covers all the aspects of information science theory and practice that a student is likely to encounter. As well as being international in scope, the book is extremely well written, up to date and authoritative
Ontology: Towards a new synthesis
This introduction to the second international conference on Formal Ontology and
Information Systems presents a brief history of ontology as a discipline spanning the boundaries of philosophy and information science. We sketch some of the reasons for the growth of ontology in the information science field, and offer a preliminary stocktaking of how the term ‘ontology’ is currently used. We conclude by suggesting some grounds for optimism as concerns the future collaboration between philosophical ontologists and information scientists

Teaching Stats for Data Science
“Data science” is a useful catchword for methods and concepts original to the field of statistics, but typically being applied to large, multivariate, observational records. Such datasets call for techniques not often part of an introduction to statistics: modeling, consideration of covariates, sophisticated visualization, and causal reasoning. This article re-imagines introductory statistics as an introduction to data science and proposes a sequence of 10 blocks that together compose a suitable course for extracting information from contemporary data. Recent extensions to the mosaic packages for R together with tools from the “tidyverse” provide a concise and readable notation for wrangling, visualization, model-building, and model interpretation: the fundamental computational tasks of data science
Quantum Hamiltonian Complexity
Constraint satisfaction problems are a central pillar of modern computational
complexity theory. This survey provides an introduction to the rapidly growing
field of Quantum Hamiltonian Complexity, which includes the study of quantum
constraint satisfaction problems. Over the past decade and a half, this field
has witnessed fundamental breakthroughs, ranging from the establishment of a
"Quantum Cook-Levin Theorem" to deep insights into the structure of 1D
low-temperature quantum systems via so-called area laws. Our aim here is to
provide a computer science-oriented introduction to the subject in order to
help bridge the language barrier between computer scientists and physicists in
the field. As such, we include the following in this survey: (1) The
motivations and history of the field, (2) a glossary of condensed matter
physics terms explained in computer-science friendly language, (3) overviews of
central ideas from condensed matter physics, such as indistinguishable
particles, mean field theory, tensor networks, and area laws, and (4) brief
expositions of selected computer science-based results in the area. For
example, as part of the latter, we provide a novel information theoretic
presentation of Bravyi's polynomial time algorithm for Quantum 2-SAT.Comment: v4: published version, 127 pages, introduction expanded to include

ViCoCITY – A virtual company environment used in distance education to teach key professional skills
This paper will discuss the background and rationale for the introduction of ViCoCITY to the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc in IT) degree offered through distance education by Oscail, Dublin City University (DCU)
Introduction to Quantum Information Processing
As a result of the capabilities of quantum information, the science of
quantum information processing is now a prospering, interdisciplinary field
focused on better understanding the possibilities and limitations of the
underlying theory, on developing new applications of quantum information and on
physically realizing controllable quantum devices. The purpose of this primer
is to provide an elementary introduction to quantum information processing, and
then to briefly explain how we hope to exploit the advantages of quantum
information. These two sections can be read independently. For reference, we
have included a glossary of the main terms of quantum information.Comment: 48 pages, to appear in LA Science. Hyperlinked PDF at
