    Essays on enterprise social media: moderation, shop floor integration and information system induced organizational change

    The digital transformation increases the pressure on innovation capabilities and challenges organizations to adapt their business models. In order to cope with the increased competitiveness, organizations face two significant internal challenges: Enabling internal digital collaboration and knowledge sharing as well as information system-induced change. This dissertation will investigate seven related research questions divided in two main parts. The first part focuses on how an organization can foster digital knowledge exchanges and collaboration in global organizations. Enterprise social media has attracted the attention of organizations as a technology for social collaboration and knowledge sharing. The dissertation will investigate how organizations can moderate the employee discourse in such platforms from a novel organizational perspective and provide insights on how to increase the encouragement for employees to contribute and assure content quality. The developed framework will provide detailed moderation approaches. In addition, the risk of privacy concerns associated with organizational interference in the new digital collaboration technologies are evaluated. The second part of the dissertation shifts the focus to the shop floor environment, an area that has faced substantial digital advancements. Those advancements change the organizational role of the shop floor to a more knowledge work-oriented environment. Firstly, a state of research regarding technology acceptance and professional diversity is presented to create an enterprise social media job-characteristic framework. Further, a unique and longitudinal shop floor case study is investigated to derive organizational challenges for enterprise social media and potentials for empowerment. To validate the future shop floor environment needs use cases for the shop floor are derived and a user profile is established. The case study is extended by expert interviews to focus on conceptualizing organizational information systems-induced change. In this regard, the role of work practices, organizational and employee mindset and information system change are integrated into a holistic organizational change model that targets employee empowerment. This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of enterprise social media from an organizational management and shop floor perspective. It contributes to understanding new digital needs at the shop floor and the information systems-induced change journey towards digital employee empowerment

    In our increasingly knowledge-based society the need for innovative concepts within the discipline of Knowledge Management (KM) becomes clear. Therefore, this article aims to shed light on current and uprising innovative technologies and concepts within the discipline of KM. This study conveys recent and previous scientific literature on the relevance of uprising innovative concepts within the various dimensions of KM. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) on various literature sources to cover the whole spectrum of innovative KM approaches. All 37 reviewed articles originate from acknowledged sources and were written in English. The findings show, which innovative concepts show relevance within KM, how they are classified into the three innovation categories social, technological, and organizational, how they manifest within KM and what to expect from future KM innovations

    Mooi Brand Salatiga, a company in the clothing retail sector, has implemented various information systems (IS) to enhance its business processes. These systems include social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, a Sales Information System for cashiers, and a website. However, Mooi Brand Salatiga often encounters several challenges with the use of these IS, including the lack of system integration, an overreliance on current technology, and an inability to develop independent information systems. COBIT 2019, a systematic and comprehensive framework, offers potential solutions to support companies in efficiently managing and monitoring their information technology. This study leads to the development of an improved pattern for information technology management at Mooi Brand Salatiga, addressing these challenges and paving the way for enhanced operational efficiency and technological autonomy

    Theoretical Backbone of Library and Information Science: A Quest

    This study primarily aims to identify unique theories and specific uses of theories in the library and information science (LIS) domain. It provides a comprehensive list of the theories used in LIS journal articles indexed by Scopus (an abstract and citation database) from 1970–2021. It expands on the most common theories and highlights the areas and purposes for which used theories in the LIS domain. Our goal is to demonstrate the usages and applications of various borrowed theories from complementary disciplines in the LIS domain. A systematical methodology is applied, following a few open-source AI-based software packages (such as ASReview, and OpenRefine), to analyse the theories against different parameters, keeping in mind the drawbacks of the previous studies. The study's findings show that the LIS domain's theoretical foundations are understudied. Researchers mainly borrowed theories from social sciences such as sociology, psychology, and management studies to solidify their domain. The paper provides a clear road map for the theoretical development of LIS research. And the resulting outputs may help policymakers, academicians, and researchers, irrespective of disciplines in general and information science in particular, understand the foundations and theoretical and methodological trends of theories that may lead to a better understanding of the theories before their selection and applications

    IT Governance Mechanisms, Employees\u27 Digital Mindset, and Behavioral Outcomes

    The disruptive nature of digitalization and the complexity and ambiguity of their technical properties require many new skills from employees today. Recent research emphasizes that the employees’ digital mindset plays an essential role in digital transformation by leveraging employee engagement. This paper aims to advance the understanding of how the behavioral outcomes of digital mindset, which encompass interpersonal interaction, focus of attention, enthusiasm for development, perspective on setbacks, and construal of effort, can be positively influenced during digital initiatives. We develop a novel research model integrating two literature streams: information technology and mindset. We conceptually link back to the behavioral outcomes of digital mindset by looking at the influence of IT governance mechanisms as potential antecedents. Our model explains how IT governance mechanisms influence the behavioral outcomes of digital mindset and helps future researchers by providing propositions on the impact of IT governance mechanisms towards more employee engagement

    Digital Security Governance: What Can We Learn from High Reliability Organizations (HROs)?

    With the growing digitalization of businesses, digital security governance (DSG) is becoming central to organizational survival strategies. However, many organizations fail to establish successful DSG practices and, consequently, fail to understand how DSG can lower the severity of cybersecurity failures. This paper aims to contribute to filling this gap. By putting the five principles of the High Reliability Organization (HRO) central to the design of our qualitative investigation, we engage in interviewing forty-two chief information security officers (CISOs) and chief information officers (CIOs) of large organizations in the Netherlands about their views on why organizations fail to successfully achieve DSG. Our data show that HRO principles are partly relevant but lacking in DSG approaches, which potentially increases security failure. We conclude this paper by discussing these findings in light of future research and practice

    CHOICE ARCHITECTURE, FRIEND, OR FOE? FUTURE DESIGNERS’ PERSPECTIVE ON THE ETHICS OF DIGITAL NUDGES

    We make an abundance of choices daily and an increasing proportion of those choices are in an online context. Digital nudges refer to the use of design elements that guide the decision-making process towards a predefined goal. An important consideration when designing digital nudges is the ethical implications. In this study, we examine how future designers perceive ethics and the use of digital nudges as design elements in interaction design. We conducted a case study with 72 design students at two Nordic universities with a focus on the future designers’ perception of ethics and the use of digital nudges as design elements. We show that ethics and reflection on responsibility are highly important aspects of choice architecture design and future designers understand ethics as crucial for design work, yet few reflect on whether a specific design or a nudge is ethical or not. Moreover, when it comes to nudging as a design element, both positive and ambivalent attitudes are common. Our main contribution consists of an in-depth understanding of future designers’ perspectives on nudging, and we forward four fundamental questions which have implications for teaching the ethics of choice architecture to future designers
