Modeling and Reasoning over Distributed Systems using Aspect-Oriented Graph Grammars
Aspect-orientation is a relatively new paradigm that introduces abstractions
to modularize the implementation of system-wide policies. It is based on a
composition operation, called aspect weaving, that implicitly modifies a base
system by performing related changes within the system modules. Aspect-oriented
graph grammars (AOGG) extend the classic graph grammar formalism by defining
aspects as sets of rule-based modifications over a base graph grammar. Despite
the advantages of aspect-oriented concepts regarding modularity, the implicit
nature of the aspect weaving operation may also introduce issues when reasoning
about the system behavior. Since in AOGGs aspect weaving is characterized by
means of rule-based rewriting, we can overcome these problems by using known
analysis techniques from the graph transformation literature to study aspect
composition. In this paper, we present a case study of a distributed
client-server system with global policies, modeled as an aspect-oriented graph
grammar, and discuss how to use the AGG tool to identify potential conflicts in
aspect weaving
The formal power of one-visit attribute grammars
An attribute grammar is one-visit if the attributes can be evaluated by walking through the derivation tree in such a way that each subtree is visited at most once. One-visit (1V) attribute grammars are compared with one-pass left-to-right (L) attribute grammars and with attribute grammars having only one synthesized attribute (1S).\ud

Every 1S attribute grammar can be made one-visit. One-visit attribute grammars are simply permutations of L attribute grammars; thus the classes of output sets of 1V and L attribute grammars coincide, and similarly for 1S and L-1S attribute grammars. In case all attribute values are trees, the translation realized by a 1V attribute grammar is the composition of the translation realized by a 1S attribute grammar with a deterministic top-down tree transduction, and vice versa; thus, using a result of Duske e.a., the class of output languages of 1V (or L) attribute grammars is the image of the class of IO macro tree languages under all deterministic top-down tree transductions
CHR Grammars
A grammar formalism based upon CHR is proposed analogously to the way
Definite Clause Grammars are defined and implemented on top of Prolog. These
grammars execute as robust bottom-up parsers with an inherent treatment of
ambiguity and a high flexibility to model various linguistic phenomena. The
formalism extends previous logic programming based grammars with a form of
context-sensitive rules and the possibility to include extra-grammatical
hypotheses in both head and body of grammar rules. Among the applications are
straightforward implementations of Assumption Grammars and abduction under
integrity constraints for language analysis. CHR grammars appear as a powerful
tool for specification and implementation of language processors and may be
proposed as a new standard for bottom-up grammars in logic programming.

Linear Bounded Composition of Tree-Walking Tree Transducers: Linear Size Increase and Complexity
Compositions of tree-walking tree transducers form a hierarchy with respect
to the number of transducers in the composition. As main technical result it is
proved that any such composition can be realized as a linear bounded
composition, which means that the sizes of the intermediate results can be
chosen to be at most linear in the size of the output tree. This has
consequences for the expressiveness and complexity of the translations in the
hierarchy. First, if the computed translation is a function of linear size
increase, i.e., the size of the output tree is at most linear in the size of
the input tree, then it can be realized by just one, deterministic,
tree-walking tree transducer. For compositions of deterministic transducers it
is decidable whether or not the translation is of linear size increase. Second,
every composition of deterministic transducers can be computed in deterministic
linear time on a RAM and in deterministic linear space on a Turing machine,
measured in the sum of the sizes of the input and output tree. Similarly, every
composition of nondeterministic transducers can be computed in simultaneous
polynomial time and linear space on a nondeterministic Turing machine. Their
output tree languages are deterministic context-sensitive, i.e., can be
recognized in deterministic linear space on a Turing machine. The membership
problem for compositions of nondeterministic translations is nondeterministic
polynomial time and deterministic linear space. The membership problem for the
composition of a nondeterministic and a deterministic tree-walking tree
translation (for a nondeterministic IO macro tree translation) is log-space
reducible to a context-free language, whereas the membership problem for the
composition of a deterministic and a nondeterministic tree-walking tree
translation (for a nondeterministic OI macro tree translation) is possibly
NP-complete
BSML: A Binding Schema Markup Language for Data Interchange in Problem Solving Environments (PSEs)
We describe a binding schema markup language (BSML) for describing data
interchange between scientific codes. Such a facility is an important
constituent of scientific problem solving environments (PSEs). BSML is designed
to integrate with a PSE or application composition system that views model
specification and execution as a problem of managing semistructured data. The
data interchange problem is addressed by three techniques for processing
semistructured data: validation, binding, and conversion. We present BSML and
describe its application to a PSE for wireless communications system design
