Discrete time piecewise affine models of genetic regulatory networks
We introduce simple models of genetic regulatory networks and we proceed to
the mathematical analysis of their dynamics. The models are discrete time
dynamical systems generated by piecewise affine contracting mappings whose
variables represent gene expression levels. When compared to other models of
regulatory networks, these models have an additional parameter which is
identified as quantifying interaction delays. In spite of their simplicity,
their dynamics presents a rich variety of behaviours. This phenomenology is not
limited to piecewise affine model but extends to smooth nonlinear discrete time
models of regulatory networks. In a first step, our analysis concerns general
properties of networks on arbitrary graphs (characterisation of the attractor,
symbolic dynamics, Lyapunov stability, structural stability, symmetries, etc).
In a second step, focus is made on simple circuits for which the attractor and
its changes with parameters are described. In the negative circuit of 2 genes,
a thorough study is presented which concern stable (quasi-)periodic
oscillations governed by rotations on the unit circle -- with a rotation number
depending continuously and monotonically on threshold parameters. These regular
oscillations exist in negative circuits with arbitrary number of genes where
they are most likely to be observed in genetic systems with non-negligible
delay effects.Comment: 34 page
Essential spectra of difference operators on \sZ^n-periodic graphs
Let (\cX, \rho) be a discrete metric space. We suppose that the group
\sZ^n acts freely on and that the number of orbits of with respect to
this action is finite. Then we call a \sZ^n-periodic discrete metric
space. We examine the Fredholm property and essential spectra of band-dominated
operators on where is a \sZ^n-periodic discrete metric space.
Our approach is based on the theory of band-dominated operators on \sZ^n and
their limit operators.
In case is the set of vertices of a combinatorial graph, the graph
structure defines a Schr\"{o}dinger operator on in a natural way. We
illustrate our approach by determining the essential spectra of Schr\"{o}dinger
operators with slowly oscillating potential both on zig-zag and on hexagonal
graphs, the latter being related to nano-structures
Dirac operators and spectral triples for some fractal sets built on curves
We construct spectral triples and, in particular, Dirac operators, for the
algebra of continuous functions on certain compact metric spaces. The triples
are countable sums of triples where each summand is based on a curve in the
space. Several fractals, like a finitely summable infinite tree and the
Sierpinski gasket, fit naturally within our framework. In these cases, we show
that our spectral triples do describe the geodesic distance and the Minkowski
dimension as well as, more generally, the complex fractal dimensions of the
space. Furthermore, in the case of the Sierpinski gasket, the associated
Dixmier-type trace coincides with the normalized Hausdorff measure of dimension

On well-posedness, stability, and bifurcation for the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow
In this article, we study the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow (ASD), a
fourth-order geometric evolution law. In particular, we prove that ASD
generates a real analytic semiflow in the space of (2 + \alpha)-little-H\"older
regular surfaces of revolution embedded in R^3 and satisfying periodic boundary
conditions. We also give conditions for global existence of solutions and prove
that solutions are real analytic in time and space. Further, we investigate the
geometric properties of solutions to ASD. Utilizing a connection to
axisymmetric surfaces with constant mean curvature, we characterize the
equilibria of ASD. Then, focusing on the family of cylinders, we establish
results regarding stability, instability and bifurcation behavior, with the
radius acting as a bifurcation parameter for the problem.Comment: 37 pages, 6 figures, To Appear in SIAM J. Math. Ana
