We generated 10 factors that indicate digital maturity, namely digital literacy and technology awareness, perceived benefits and risks, types and patters of technology usage, managing tensions, adult interaction and mediation, regulation of emotional responses, needs satisfaction, and digital civic behaviour. The article also develops a high-level model showing interrelations between socio-technical environment, technology usage and experiences, and reactions to technology usag

The aim of the present study is to examine the internet addiction levels of university students in terms of the state of doing sport and different variables. A total of 300 students, 132 male and 168, studying in Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University participated in the study. Internet Addiction Scale which was developed by Günüç and Kayri (2010) and which had four sub-dimensions (withdrawal, controlling difficulty, disorder in functionality and social isolation) was used. SPSS 22.0 program was used for the statistical analysis. Significance was found in the sub-dimensions of withdrawal and social isolation in terms of the variable of gender (p<0.05) and in the sub-dimension of social isolation in terms of the variables of faculty and the state of doing sport regularly (p<0.05). It can be seen that internet addiction levels were similar in all sub-dimensions except for social isolation, while they were found to be different in the sub-dimension of withdrawal in terms of the variable of gender. This result is thought to be associated with the fact that students who do sport regularly and those attending sport sciences faculty are not exposed to social isolation due to sport and that they lead more social lives when compared with the students of other faculties. In terms of the variable of gender, it is thought that the reason why female students had higher withdrawal levels can be due to the fact that men can act more comfortably in social life

Internet addiction and the moral implication of antisocial Internet behavior will be investigated in this paper. More and more people use the Internet in their daily life. Unfortunately the percentage of people who use the internet excessively also increases. The concept of Internet addiction or pathological use of Internet is discussed in detail, and the characteristics of Internet addicts are also delineated. The social (especially the antisocial) use of Internet is discussed. It is argued that the behavior of Internet use is similar to daily life social behavior. In other words, Internet behavior is a kind of social behavior. Kohlberg's theory of moral development is employed to delineate the moral reasoning of the antisocial Internet behavior. The following behaviors are regarded as antisocial Internet behavior: (1) the use of Internet to carry out illegal activities such as selling faked products or offensive pornographic materials, (2) the use of Internet to bully others (i.e., cyberbullying) such as distributing libelous statements against a certain person, (3) the use of Internet to cheat others, and (4) the use of Internet to do illegal gambling. The characteristics of the moral stages that are associated with these antisocial Internet behaviors are investigated in detail

In the construction of the teaching package on the Internet use, two major moral characters, respect and responsibility, form the core theoretical basis. The respect character consists of respect for others and self-respect while the responsibility character contains social, civil, and global responsibility. There are a total of nine units on the Internet use in the junior secondary curriculum. There are two units in Secondary One curriculum: the first unit deals with cheating behavior and privacy issues concerning the Internet, and the second one discusses the effect of excessive use of the Internet on life and study. In Secondary Two curriculum, we discuss the following social phenomena on the Internet with students: online shopping, pornographic materials on internet, and infringement of a copyright. Finally, we have designed four units on the Internet use in Secondary Three curriculum which focuses more on the relationship between the Internet use and our health. We try to answer the question on how we can use the Internet healthily and also the possibility on how it may hurt us. Similar to the second unit in Secondary One curriculum, we have designed three more units on discussing the effects of excessive use of the Internet with students. We would like to alert students that ineffective use of the Internet will hurt us mentally and physically. For illustrative purposes, two units in the Secondary One and Two curriculums are outlined in this paper

Social anxiety moderates the links between excessive chatting and compulsive Internet use

    Get PDF
Excessive online chatting can lead to unwanted consequences such as compulsive Internet use over time. Not all adolescents use chatting for the same purpose, however, and these links may not be as pronounced for socially anxious adolescents as they likely communicate with others online in order to compensate for offline social inadequacies. The current study investigated whether social anxiety moderated the links between excessive chatting and compulsive Internet use over time. Using a sample of 523 early adolescents (269 girls; Mage = 14.00) from a 3-wave longitudinal study, the links between excessive chatting and compulsive Internet use were investigated via manifest autoregressive models, and moderating effects of social anxiety were tested via multiple-group comparison procedures. The results showed bidirectional links between excessive chatting and compulsive Internet use from Time 2–Time 3, as excessive chatting predicted more symptoms of compulsive Internet use, whereas compulsive Internet use predicted more excessive chatting – over and above the effects of gender. These links were present for adolescents low on social anxiety, but they were largely missing for highly socially anxious adolescents. Thus, social anxiety may have protective effects for early adolescents who spend too much time chatting online, as it may help reduce the risk of developing symptoms of compulsive Internet use

    The Artificial Medium Laws Theory

This paper articulates the Artificial Medium Laws Theory. The theory is comprised of Perceived Psychological Dimensions, namely: sound, picture, moving picture, time and interaction. These dimensions are the building blocks of the theory’s five laws: 1) The Truth in the Medium is Context Dependent, 2) The Stronger Dimension Prevails, 3) Medium with Time Dimension Determines its Usage Length, 4) The More Dimensions the Medium Poses the Weaker the User’s Imagination, and 5) The User is Bound to All the Laws. The theory seeks to explain the artificial medium influence on human users and to suggest potential implications
