    Hybrid Search: Effectively Combining Keywords and Semantic Searches

    This paper describes hybrid search, a search method supporting both document and knowledge retrieval via the flexible combination of ontologybased search and keyword-based matching. Hybrid search smoothly copes with lack of semantic coverage of document content, which is one of the main limitations of current semantic search methods. In this paper we define hybrid search formally, discuss its compatibility with the current semantic trends and present a reference implementation: K-Search. We then show how the method outperforms both keyword-based search and pure semantic search in terms of precision and recall in a set of experiments performed on a collection of about 18.000 technical documents. Experiments carried out with professional users show that users understand the paradigm and consider it very powerful and reliable. K-Search has been ported to two applications released at Rolls-Royce plc for searching technical documentation about jet engines

    Revamping question answering with a semantic approach over world knowledge

    Classic textual question answering (QA) approaches that rely on statistical keyword relevance scoring without exploiting semantic content are useful to a certain extent, but are limited to questions answered by a small text excerpt. With the maturation of Wikipedia and with upcoming projects like DBpedia, we feel that nowadays QA can adopt a deeper, semantic approach to the task, where answers can be inferred using knowledge bases to overcome the limitations of textual QA approaches. In GikiCLEF, a QA-flavoured evaluation task, the best performing systems followed a semantic approach. In this paper, we present our motivations for preferring semantic approaches to QA over textual approaches, with Wikipedia serving as a raw knowledge source

    LexOWL: A Bridge from LexGrid to OWL

    The Lexical Grid project is an on-going community driven initiative that provides a common terminology model to represent multiple vocabulary and ontology sources as well as a scalable and robust API for accessing such information. In order to add more powerful functionalities to the existing infrastructure and align LexGrid more closely with various Semantic Web technologies, we introduce the LexOWL project for representing the ontologies modeled within the LexGrid environment in OWL (Web Ontology Language). The crux of this effort is to create a “bridge” that functionally connects the LexBIG (a LexGrid API) and the OWL API (an interface that implements OWL) seamlessly. In this paper, we discuss the key aspects of designing and implementing the LexOWL bridge. We compared LexOWL with other OWL converting tools and conclude that LexOWL provides an OWL mapping and converting tool with well-defined interoperability for information in the biomedical domain

    Breaking vendors and city locks through a semantic-enabled global interoperable Internet-of-Things system: a smart parking case

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is unanimously identified as one of the main technology enablers for the development of future intelligent environments. However, the current IoT landscape is suffering from large fragmentation with many platforms and vendors competing with their own solution. This fragmented scenario is now jeopardizing the uptake of the IoT, as investments are not carried out partly because of the fear of being captured in lock-in situations. To overcome these fears, interoperability solutions are being put forward in order to guarantee that the deployed IoT infrastructure, independently of its manufacturer and/or platform, can exchange information, data and knowledge in a meaningful way. This paper presents a Global IoT Services (GIoTS) use case demonstrating how semantic interoperability among five different smart city IoT deployments can be leveraged to develop a smart urban mobility service. The application that has been developed seamlessly consumes data from them for providing parking guidance and mobility suggestions at the five locations (Santander and Barcelona in Spain and Busan, Seoul and Seongnam in South Korea) where the abovementioned IoT deployments are installed.
