MeLinDa: an interlinking framework for the web of data
The web of data consists of data published on the web in such a way that they
can be interpreted and connected together. It is thus critical to establish
links between these data, both for the web of data and for the semantic web
that it contributes to feed. We consider here the various techniques developed
for that purpose and analyze their commonalities and differences. We propose a
general framework and show how the diverse techniques fit in the framework.
From this framework we consider the relation between data interlinking and
ontology matching. Although, they can be considered similar at a certain level
(they both relate formal entities), they serve different purposes, but would
find a mutual benefit at collaborating. We thus present a scheme under which it
is possible for data linking tools to take advantage of ontology alignments.Comment: N° RR-7691 (2011
Comparing webometric with web-independent rankings: a case study with German universities
In this paper we examine if hyperlink-based (webometric) indicators can be
used to rank academic websites. Therefore we analyzed the interlinking
structure of German university websites and compared our simple hyperlink-based
ranking with official and web-independent rankings of universities. We found
that link impact could not easily be seen as a prestige factor for
universities.Comment: 3 pages, ACM Web Science 201
Synote: weaving media fragments and linked data
While end users could easily share and tag the multimedia resources online, the searching and reusing of the inside content of multimedia, such as a certain area within an image or a ten minutes segment within a one-hour video, is still difficult. Linked data is a promising way to interlink media fragments with other resources. Many applications in Web 2.0 have generated large amount of external annotations linked to media fragments. In this paper, we use Synote as the target application to discuss how media fragments could be published together with external annotations following linked data principles. Our design solves the dereferencing, describing and interlinking methods problems in interlinking multimedia. We also implement a model to let Google index media fragments which improves media fragments' online presence. The evaluation shows that our design can successfully publish media fragments and annotations for both semantic Web agents and traditional search engines. Publishing media fragments using the design we describe in this paper will lead to better indexing of multimedia resources and their consequent findabilit
Linked education: interlinking educational resources and the web of data
Research on interoperability of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) repositories throughout the last decade has led to a fragmented landscape of competing approaches, such as metadata schemas and interface mechanisms. However, so far Web-scale integration of resources is not facilitated, mainly due to the lack of take-up of shared principles, datasets and schemas. On the other hand, the Linked Data approach has emerged as the de-facto standard for sharing data on the Web and offers a large potential to solve interoperability issues in the field of TEL. In this paper, we describe a general approach to exploit the wealth of already existing TEL data on the Web by allowing its exposure as Linked Data and by taking into account automated enrichment and interlinking techniques to provide rich and well-interlinked data for the educational domain. This approach has been implemented in the context of the mEducator project where data from a number of open TEL data repositories has been integrated, exposed and enriched by following Linked Data principles

Linking Data Across Universities: An Integrated Video Lectures Dataset
This paper presents our work and experience interlinking educational information across universities through the use of Linked Data principles and technologies. More specifically this paper is focused on selecting, extracting, structuring and interlinking information of video lectures produced by 27 different educational institutions. For this purpose, selected information from several websites and YouTube channels have been scraped and structured according to well-known vocabularies, like FOAF 1, or the W3C Ontology for Media Resources 2. To integrate this information, the extracted videos have been categorized under a common classification space, the taxonomy defined by the Open Directory Project 3. An evaluation of this categorization process has been conducted obtaining a 98% degree of coverage and 89% degree of correctness. As a result of this process a new Linked Data dataset has been released containing more than 14,000 video lectures from 27 different institutions and categorized under a common classification scheme
The Semantic Web MIDI Tape: An Interface for Interlinking MIDI and Context Metadata
The Linked Data paradigm has been used to publish a large number of musical datasets and ontologies on the Semantic Web, such as MusicBrainz, AcousticBrainz, and the Music Ontology. Recently, the MIDI Linked Data Cloud has been added to these datasets, representing more than 300,000 pieces in MIDI format as Linked Data, opening up the possibility for linking fine-grained symbolic music representations to existing music metadata databases. Despite the dataset making MIDI resources available in Web data standard formats such as RDF and SPARQL, the important issue of finding meaningful links between these MIDI resources and relevant contextual metadata in other datasets remains. A fundamental barrier for the provision and generation of such links is the difficulty that users have at adding new MIDI performance data and metadata to the platform. In this paper, we propose the Semantic Web MIDI Tape, a set of tools and associated interface for interacting with the MIDI Linked Data Cloud by enabling users to record, enrich, and retrieve MIDI performance data and related metadata in native Web data standards. The goal of such interactions is to find meaningful links between published MIDI resources and their relevant contextual metadata. We evaluate the Semantic Web MIDI Tape in various use cases involving user-contributed content, MIDI similarity querying, and entity recognition methods, and discuss their potential for finding links between MIDI resources and metadata
GeomRDF: A Geodata Converter with a Fine-Grained Structured Representation of Geometry in the Web
In recent years, with the advent of the web of data, a growing number of
national mapping agencies tend to publish their geospatial data as Linked Data.
However, differences between traditional GIS data models and Linked Data model
can make the publication process more complicated. Besides, it may require, to
be done, the setting of several parameters and some expertise in the semantic
web technologies. In addition, the use of standards like GeoSPARQL (or ad hoc
predicates) is mandatory to perform spatial queries on published geospatial
data. In this paper, we present GeomRDF, a tool that helps users to convert
spatial data from traditional GIS formats to RDF model easily. It generates
geometries represented as GeoSPARQL WKT literal but also as structured
geometries that can be exploited by using only the RDF query language, SPARQL.
GeomRDF was implemented as a module in the RDF publication platform Datalift. A
validation of GeomRDF has been realized against the French administrative units
dataset (provided by IGN France).Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, the 1st International Workshop on Geospatial

Towards a Knowledge Graph based Speech Interface
Applications which use human speech as an input require a speech interface
with high recognition accuracy. The words or phrases in the recognised text are
annotated with a machine-understandable meaning and linked to knowledge graphs
for further processing by the target application. These semantic annotations of
recognised words can be represented as a subject-predicate-object triples which
collectively form a graph often referred to as a knowledge graph. This type of
knowledge representation facilitates to use speech interfaces with any spoken
input application, since the information is represented in logical, semantic
form, retrieving and storing can be followed using any web standard query
languages. In this work, we develop a methodology for linking speech input to
knowledge graphs and study the impact of recognition errors in the overall
process. We show that for a corpus with lower WER, the annotation and linking
of entities to the DBpedia knowledge graph is considerable. DBpedia Spotlight,
a tool to interlink text documents with the linked open data is used to link
the speech recognition output to the DBpedia knowledge graph. Such a
knowledge-based speech recognition interface is useful for applications such as
question answering or spoken dialog systems.Comment: Under Review in International Workshop on Grounding Language
