    Estimation of heart rate from foot worn photoplethysmography sensors during fast bike exercise

    This paper presents a new method for estimating the average heart rate from a foot/ankle worn photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor during fast bike activity. Placing the PPG sensor on the lower half of the body allows more energy to be collected from energy harvesting in order to give a power autonomous sensor node, but comes at the cost of introducing significant motion interference into the PPG trace. We present a normalised least mean square adaptive filter and short-time Fourier transform based algorithm for estimating heart rate in the presence of this motion contamination. Results from 8 subjects show the new algorithm has an average error of 9 beats-per-minute when compared to an ECG gold standard

    Estimating Epipolar Geometry With The Use of a Camera Mounted Orientation Sensor

    Context: Image processing and computer vision are rapidly becoming more and more commonplace, and the amount of information about a scene, such as 3D geometry, that can be obtained from an image, or multiple images of the scene is steadily increasing due to increasing resolutions and availability of imaging sensors, and an active research community. In parallel, advances in hardware design and manufacturing are allowing for devices such as gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers and GPS receivers to be included alongside imaging devices at a consumer level. Aims: This work aims to investigate the use of orientation sensors in the field of computer vision as sources of data to aid with image processing and the determination of a scene’s geometry, in particular, the epipolar geometry of a pair of images - and devises a hybrid methodology from two sets of previous works in order to exploit the information available from orientation sensors alongside data gathered from image processing techniques. Method: A readily available consumer-level orientation sensor was used alongside a digital camera to capture images of a set of scenes and record the orientation of the camera. The fundamental matrix of these pairs of images was calculated using a variety of techniques - both incorporating data from the orientation sensor and excluding its use Results: Some methodologies could not produce an acceptable result for the Fundamental Matrix on certain image pairs, however, a method described in the literature that used an orientation sensor always produced a result - however in cases where the hybrid or purely computer vision methods also produced a result - this was found to be the least accurate. Conclusion: Results from this work show that the use of an orientation sensor to capture information alongside an imaging device can be used to improve both the accuracy and reliability of calculations of the scene’s geometry - however noise from the orientation sensor can limit this accuracy and further research would be needed to determine the magnitude of this problem and methods of mitigation

    Constant beamwidth generalised sidelobe canceller

    In this paper, we proposed a constant beamwidth discrete Fourier transform (DFT) beamformer based on the generalised sidelobe canceller (GSC). Broadband signals are decomposed into frequency bins which are grouped into octaves and tapered individually. The resulting beampattern possesses constant beamwidth across the entire operating spectrum, thus ensuring uniform spatial resolution. Further incorporation of the GSC allows adaptive nulling of interference to coincide with uniform resolution, enhancing the beamformer’s performance. However, modification to the constraint equation of the standard GSC is required to account for the frequency-dependent weighting of sensors

    Optical wireless communication based indoor positioning algorithms: performance optimisation and mathematical modelling

    In this paper, the performance of the optimal beam radius indoor positioning (OBRIP) and two-receiver indoor positioning (TRIP) algorithms are analysed by varying system parameters in the presence of an indoor optical wireless channel modelled in line of sight configuration. From all the conducted simulations, the minimum average error value obtained for TRIP is 0.61 m against 0.81 m obtained for OBRIP for room dimensions of 10 m × 10 m × 3 m. In addition, for each simulated condition, TRIP, which uses two receivers, outperforms OBRIP and reduces position estimation error up to 30%. To get a better understanding of error in position estimation for different combinations of beam radius and separation between light emitting diodes, the 90th percentile error is determined using a cumulative distribution frequency (CDF) plot, which gives an error value of 0.94 m for TRIP as compared to 1.20 m obtained for OBRIP. Both algorithms also prove to be robust towards change in receiver tilting angle, thus providing flexibility in the selection of the parameters to adapt to any indoor environment. In addition, in this paper, a mathematical model based on the concept of raw moments is used to confirm the findings of the simulation results for the proposed algorithms. Using this mathematical model, closed-form expressions are derived for standard deviation of uniformly distributed points in an optical wireless communication based indoor positioning system with circular and rectangular beam shapes
