    A Survey of Network Optimization Techniques for Traffic Engineering

Nevertheless, the layering principle at the basis of interoperability severely limits the performance of data communication networks, thus requiring proper configuration and management in order to provide effective management of traffic flows.     Optimization and Performance Analysis of High Speed Mobile Access Networks

    The end-to-end performance evaluation of high speed broadband mobile access networks is the main focus of this work. Novel transport network adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms are proposed, implemented, tested and validated using a comprehensive High speed packet Access (HSPA) system simulator. The simulation analysis confirms that the aforementioned algorithms are able to provide reliable and guaranteed services for both network operators and end users cost-effectively. Further, two novel analytical models one for congestion control and the other for the combined flow control and congestion control which are based on Markov chains are designed and developed to perform the aforementioned analysis efficiently compared to time consuming detailed system simulations. In addition, the effects of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) transport network (S1and X2 interfaces) on the end user performance are investigated and analysed by introducing a novel comprehensive MAC scheduling scheme and a novel transport service differentiation model

    Explicit congestion control algorithms for available bit rate services in asynchronous transfer mode networks

    Congestion control of available bit rate (ABR) services in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks has been the recent focus of the ATM Forum. The focus of this dissertation is to study the impact of queueing disciplines on ABR service congestion control, and to develop an explicit rate control algorithm. Two queueing disciplines, namely, First-In-First-Out (FIFO) and per-VC (virtual connection) queueing, are examined. Performance in terms of fairness, throughput, cell loss rate, buffer size and network utilization are benchmarked via extensive simulations. Implementation complexity analysis and trade-offs associated with each queueing implementation are addressed. Contrary to the common belief, our investigation demonstrates that per-VC queueing, which is costlier and more complex, does not necessarily provide any significant improvement over simple FIFO queueing. A new ATM switch algorithm is proposed to complement the ABR congestion control standard. The algorithm is designed to work with the rate-based congestion control framework recently recommended by the ATM Forum for ABR services. The algorithm\u27s primary merits are fast convergence, high throughput, high link utilization, and small buffer requirements. Mathematical analysis is done to show that the algorithm converges to the max-min fair allocation rates in finite time, and the convergence time is proportional to the distinct number of fair allocations and the round-trip delays in the network. At the steady state, the algorithm operates without causing any oscillations in rates. The algorithm does not require any parameter tuning, and proves to be very robust in a large ATM network. The impact of ATM switching and ATM layer congestion control on the performance of TCP/IP traffic is studied and the results are presented. The study shows that ATM layer congestion control improves the performance of TCP/IP traffic over ATM, and implementing the proposed switch algorithm drastically reduces the required switch buffer requirements. In order to validate claims, many benchmark ATM networks are simulated, and the performance of the switch is evaluated in terms of fairness, link utilization, response time, and buffer size requirements. In terms of performance and complexity, the algorithm proposed here offers many advantages over other proposed algorithms in the literature

    Lambda-Based Prioritisation In Multichannel Optical Ip Network

    The explosion of the Internet and its application creates demand for more network resources and bandwidth. The internet traffics such as voice, video and interactive applications are more susceptible to delay and jitter while bursty data traffic such as e-mail and file transfer are more sensitive to loss. To accommodate the bandwidth demands, the trend of the network also experiences a major change from copper-based to optical fibre transmission link. Besides of its many superior properties, optical fibre has an extraordinary limitless bandwidth. However increasing the bandwidth in respond to the need of bandwidth demands is not necessarily an appropriate solution. As more and more applications use the bandwidth, congestion still occurs. Therefore, the Quality of Service (QoS) is introduced into the network. Different type of Internet traffic requires different treatment while propagating along the network and thus requires a specific QoS characteristic.In this research, the traffic is split into four levels of priority classes that require different levels of QoS treatment. Each class of traffic is transmitted at different wavelength (A). The highest priority class deserved the best QoS treatment while lower prichity classes needs the lower QoS treatment. Therefore, there are four channels to carr four types of traffic. The Sub-Carrier Modulation (SCM) technique is used to cal the optical traffic and it is transmitted on to the optical communication ink using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. The Fib( Delay Line (FDL) that acts as an optical buffer is used to resolve the contention on the input port at the receiver. During the contention resolution, the lower priority traffic is buffered while transmitting the higher priority traffic. The simulation results show that the highest priority traffic gets the best treatment while propagating in the network. The performance of the highest priority traffic is the best whereby it has low loss, low delay and yet high throughput and efficiency. The lower priority traffic sustains high loss, longer delay but low throughput and efficiency

    Quality of Service over Specific Link Layers: state of the art report

    The Integrated Services concept is proposed as an enhancement to the current Internet architecture, to provide a better Quality of Service (QoS) than that provided by the traditional Best-Effort service. The features of the Integrated Services are explained in this report. To support Integrated Services, certain requirements are posed on the underlying link layer. These requirements are studied by the Integrated Services over Specific Link Layers (ISSLL) IETF working group. The status of this ongoing research is reported in this document. To be more specific, the solutions to provide Integrated Services over ATM, IEEE 802 LAN technologies and low-bitrate links are evaluated in detail. The ISSLL working group has not yet studied the requirements, that are posed on the underlying link layer, when this link layer is wireless. Therefore, this state of the art report is extended with an identification of the requirements that are posed on the underlying wireless link, to provide differentiated Quality of Service

    Exploiting the power of multiplicity: a holistic survey of network-layer multipath

    The Internet is inherently a multipath network: For an underlying network with only a single path, connecting various nodes would have been debilitatingly fragile. Unfortunately, traditional Internet technologies have been designed around the restrictive assumption of a single working path between a source and a destination. The lack of native multipath support constrains network performance even as the underlying network is richly connected and has redundant multiple paths. Computer networks can exploit the power of multiplicity, through which a diverse collection of paths is resource pooled as a single resource, to unlock the inherent redundancy of the Internet. This opens up a new vista of opportunities, promising increased throughput (through concurrent usage of multiple paths) and increased reliability and fault tolerance (through the use of multiple paths in backup/redundant arrangements). There are many emerging trends in networking that signify that the Internet's future will be multipath, including the use of multipath technology in data center computing; the ready availability of multiple heterogeneous radio interfaces in wireless (such as Wi-Fi and cellular) in wireless devices; ubiquity of mobile devices that are multihomed with heterogeneous access networks; and the development and standardization of multipath transport protocols such as multipath TCP. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of the literature on network-layer multipath solutions. We will present a detailed investigation of two important design issues, namely, the control plane problem of how to compute and select the routes and the data plane problem of how to split the flow on the computed paths. The main contribution of this paper is a systematic articulation of the main design issues in network-layer multipath routing along with a broad-ranging survey of the vast literature on network-layer multipathing. We also highlight open issues and identify directions for future work

    An Efficient Framework of Congestion Control for Next-Generation Networks

    The success of the Internet can partly be attributed to the congestion control algorithm in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). However, with the tremendous increase in the diversity of networked systems and applications, TCP performance limitations are becoming increasingly problematic and the need for new transport protocol designs has become increasingly important.Prior research has focused on the design of either end-to-end protocols (e.g., CUBIC) that rely on implicit congestion signals such as loss and/or delay or network-based protocols (e.g., XCP) that use precise per-flow feedback from the network. While the former category of schemes haveperformance limitations, the latter are hard to deploy, can introduce high per-packet overhead, and open up new security challenges. This dissertation explores the middle ground between these designs and makes four contributions. First, we study the interplay between performance and feedback in congestion control protocols. We argue that congestion feedback in the form of aggregate load can provide the richness needed to meet the challenges of next-generation networks and applications. Second, we present the design, analysis, and evaluation of an efficient framework for congestion control called Binary Marking Congestion Control (BMCC). BMCC uses aggregate load feedback to achieve efficient and fair bandwidth allocations on high bandwidth-delaynetworks while minimizing packet loss rates and average queue length. BMCC reduces flow completiontimes by up to 4x over TCP and uses only the existing Explicit Congestion Notification bits.Next, we consider the incremental deployment of BMCC. We study the bandwidth sharing properties of BMCC and TCP over different partial deployment scenarios. We then present algorithms for ensuring safe co-existence of BMCC and TCP on the Internet. Finally, we consider the performance of BMCC over Wireless LANs. We show that the time-varying nature of the capacity of a WLAN can lead to significant performance issues for protocols that require capacity estimates for feedback computation. Using a simple model we characterize the capacity of a WLAN and propose the usage of the average service rate experienced by network layer packets as an estimate for capacity. Through extensive evaluation, we show that the resulting estimates provide good performance
