Ambient orchestration in assisted environment
Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) stands for
information and communication technology
enabled smart home environment that serves
persons, especially the elderly and disabled in their
independent living. Among many already
developed AAL systems, technologies, resources
and services, the main problem about their
inherent interconnection still remains. One of the
big research issues is to propose reference
architecture and develop an open and standardized
platform that should serve wider community as an
enabler for cooperating concept â collaboration
between competitors. This paper presents an
experimental ambient orchestration in assisted
environment on top of universAAL middleware that
is based on the reference architecture under
development within universAAL research project.
Our contributions are the following:
interconnection scenario using industry
commercial products, verification of reference
architecture and user guides, developed web
services for ambient orchestration within case
study and its demonstration in real environment
Wireless triple play system
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em
Engenharia Electrotécnica e ComputadoresTriple play is a service that combines three types of services: voice, data and multimedia
over a single communication channel for a price that is less than the total price of the individual services. However there is no standard for provisioning the Triple play services, rather they are provisioned individually, since the requirements are quite different for each service. The digital revolution helped to create and deliver a high quality media solutions. One of the most demanding services is the Video on Demand (VoD). This implicates a dedicated streaming channel for each user in order to provide normal media player commands (as pause, fast forward).
Most of the multimedia companies that develops personalized products does not always fulfil the users needs and are far from being cheap solutions. The goal of the project was to create a reliable and scalable triple play solution that works via Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), fully capable of dealing with the existing state of the art multimedia technologies only resorting to open-source tools.
This project was design to be a transparent web environment using only web technologies
to maximize the potential of the services. HyperText Markup Language (HTML),Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript were the used technologies for the development
of the applications. Both a administration and user interfaces were developed to
fully manage all video contents and properly view it in a rich and appealing application,
providing the proof of concept.
The developed prototype was tested in a WLAN with up to four clients and the Quality
of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) was measured for several combinations
of active services. In the end it is possible to acknowledge that the developed prototype was capable of dealing with all the problems of WLAN technologies and successfully delivery all the proposed services with high QoE

User generated content for IMS-based IPTV
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references.Web 2.0 services have been on the rise due to improved bandwidth availability. Users can now connect to the internet with a variety of portable devices which are capable of performing multiple tasks. Due to this, services such as Voice over IP (VoIP), presence, social networks, instant messaging (IM) and Internet Protocol television (IPTV) to mention but a few, started to emerge...This thesis proposed a framework that will offer user-generated content on an IMS-Based IPTV and the framework will include a personalised advertising system..
IPTV data reduction strategy to measure real usersâ behaviours
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em
Engenharia InformĂĄticaThe digital IPTV service has evolved in terms of features, technology and accessibility of their contents. However, the rapid evolution of features and services has brought a more complex offering to customers, which often are not enjoyed or even perceived.
Therefore, it is important to measure the real advantage of those features and understand how they are used by customers. In this work, we present a strategy that deals directly with the real IPTV data, which result from the interaction actions with the set-top boxes by customers. But this data has a very low granularity level, which is complex and difficult to interpret. The approach is to transform the clicking actions to a more conceptual and representative level of the running activities. Furthermore, there is a significant reduction in the data cardinality, enhanced in terms of information quality. More than a
transformation, this approach aims to be iterative, where at each level, we achieve a more accurate information, in order to characterize a particular behaviour.
As experimental results, we present some application areas regarding the main offered
features in this digital service. In particular, is made a study about zapping behaviour, and also an evaluation about DVR service usage. It is also discussed the possibility to integrate the strategy devised in a particular carrier, aiming to analyse the consumption rate of their services, in order to adjust them to customer real usage profile, and also to study the feasibility of new services introduction
Future broadband access network challenges
Copyright @ 2010 IEEEThe optical and wireless communication systems convergence will activate the potential capacity of photonic technology for providing the expected growth in interactive video, voice communication and data traffic services that are cost effective and a green communication service. The last decade growth of the broadband internet projects the number of active users will grow to over 2 billion globally by the end of 2014. Enabling the abandoned capacity of photonic signal processing is the promising solution for seamless transportation of the future consumer traffic demand. In this paper, the future traffic growth of the internet, wireless worldwide subscribers, and the end-users during the last and next decades is investigated. The challenges of the traditional access networks and Radio over Fiber solution are presented
