    Comparing Evolutionary Operators, Search Spaces, and Evolutionary Algorithms in the Construction of Facial Composites

    Facial composite construction is one of the most successful applications of interactive evolutionary computation. In spite of this, previous work in the area of composite construction has not investigated the algorithm design options in detail. We address this issue with four experiments. In the first experiment a sorting task is used to identify the 12 most salient dimensions of a 30-dimensional search space. In the second experiment the performances of two mutation and two recombination operators for interactive genetic algorithms are compared. In the third experiment three search spaces are compared: a 30-dimensional search space, a mathematically reduced 12-dimensional search space, and a 12-dimensional search space formed from the 12 most salient dimensions. Finally, we compare the performances of an interactive genetic algorithm to interactive differential evolution. Our results show that the facial composite construction process is remarkably robust to the choice of evolutionary operator(s), the dimensionality of the search space, and the choice of interactive evolutionary algorithm. We attribute this to the imprecise nature of human face perception and differences between the participants in how they interact with the algorithms. Povzetek: Kompozitna gradnja obrazov je ena izmed najbolj uspeĆĄnih aplikacij interaktivnega evolucijskega ra?cunanja. Kljub temu pa do zdaj na podro?cju kompozitne gradnje niso bile podrobno raziskane moĆŸnosti snovanja algoritma. To vpraĆĄanje smo obravnavali s ĆĄtirimi poskusi. V prvem je uporabljeno sortiranje za identifikacijo 12 najbolj izstopajo?cih dimenzij 30-dimenzionalnega preiskovalnega prostora. V drugem primerjamo u?cinkovitost dveh mutacij in dveh rekombinacijskih operaterjev za interaktivni genetski algoritem. V tretjem primerjamo tri preiskovalne prostore: 30-dimenzionalni, matemati?cno reducirani 12-dimenzionalni in 12-dimenzionalni prostor sestavljen iz 12 najpomembnejĆĄih dimenzij. Na koncu smo primerjali uspeĆĄnost interaktivnega genetskega algoritma z interaktivno diferencialno evolucijo. Rezultati kaĆŸejo, da je proces kompozitne gradnje obrazov izredno robusten glede na izbiro evolucijskega operatorja(-ev), dimenzionalnost preiskovalnega prostora in izbiro interaktivnega evolucijskega algoritma.     Computer analysis of face beauty: a survey

    The human face conveys to other human beings, and potentially to computer systems, information such as identity, intentions, emotional and health states, attractiveness, age, gender and ethnicity. In most cases analyzing this information involves the computer science as well as the human and medical sciences. The most studied multidisciplinary problems are analyzing emotions, estimating age and modeling aging effects. An emerging area is the analysis of human attractiveness. The purpose of this paper is to survey recent research on the computer analysis of human beauty. First we present results in human sciences and medicine pointing to a largely shared and data-driven perception of attractiveness, which is a rationale of computer beauty analysis. After discussing practical application areas, we survey current studies on the automatic analysis of facial attractiveness aimed at: i) relating attractiveness to particular facial features; ii) assessing attractiveness automatically; iii) improving the attractiveness of 2D or 3D face images. Finally we discuss open problems and possible lines of research

    A Deep Learning-Based Aesthetic Surgery Recommendation System

    We propose in this chapter a deep learning-based recommendation system for aesthetic surgery, composing of a mobile application and a deep learning model. The deep learning model built based on the dataset of before- and after-surgery facial images can estimate the probability of the perfection of some parts of a face. In this study, we focus on the most two popular treatments: rejuvenation treatment and eye double-fold surgery. It is assumed that the outcomes of our history surgeries are perfect. Firstly a convolutional autoencoder is trained by eye images before and after surgery captured from various angles. The trained encoder is utilized to extract learned generic eye features. Secondly, the encoder is further trained by pairs of image samples, captured before and after surgery, to predict the probability of perfection, so-called perfection score. Based on this score, the system would suggest whether some sorts of specific aesthetic surgeries should be performed. We preliminarily achieve 88.9 and 93.1% accuracy on rejuvenation treatment and eye double-fold surgery, respectively

    Interactive Evolutionary Algorithms for Image Enhancement and Creation

    Image enhancement and creation, particularly for aesthetic purposes, are tasks for which the use of interactive evolutionary algorithms would seem to be well suited. Previous work has concentrated on the development of various aspects of the interactive evolutionary algorithms and their application to various image enhancement and creation problems. Robust evaluation of algorithmic design options in interactive evolutionary algorithms and the comparison of interactive evolutionary algorithms to alternative approaches to achieving the same goals is generally less well addressed. The work presented in this thesis is primarily concerned with different interactive evolutionary algorithms, search spaces, and operators for setting the input values required by image processing and image creation tasks. A secondary concern is determining when the use of the interactive evolutionary algorithm approach to image enhancement problems is warranted and how it compares with alternative approaches. Various interactive evolutionary algorithms were implemented and compared in a number of specifically devised experiments using tasks of varying complexity. A novel aspect of this thesis, with regards to other work in the study of interactive evolutionary algorithms, was that statistical analysis of the data gathered from the experiments was performed. This analysis demonstrated, contrary to popular assumption, that the choice of algorithm parameters, operators, search spaces, and even the underlying evolutionary algorithm has little effect on the quality of the resulting images or the time it takes to develop them. It was found that the interaction methods chosen when implementing the user interface of the interactive evolutionary algorithms had a greater influence on the performances of the algorithms

    Recommendations against dolphinaria in India: based on worldwide scientific research on the welfare of dolphins in captivity

    "This document is to serve as a guide for government agencies and other relevant authorities by providing a brief overview of significant global research studies on the welfare of captive cetacean populations with special emphasis on bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.), that are held in Dolphinaria worldwide. The information presented here, provides a strong case against the keeping of these marine mammals in captivity and can provide government authorities with relevant data to refuse permission to those organisations, government bodies and individuals who propose to set up such captive facilities in India. The objectives of this document are to present in brief, the current known proposals for Dolphinaria in India, followed by an overview of the existing national policies and legalities related to the capture, import and display of cetacean species.

    Design, Development and Implementation Framework for a Postgraduate Non-Surgical Aesthetics Curriculum

    Non-surgical aesthetics (NSA) procedures are primarily performed in private clinics away from traditional teaching hospital settings, establishing structured training and education in these procedures during residency training has been challenging. The objective of this study was to design and develop an evidence-based postgraduate curriculum in non-surgical aesthetics. It necessitated determining the current state of training and education for NSA procedures in postgraduate clinical education. Following a design-based research approach, a subsequent systematic literature review and a cross-sectional global-needs assessment study established the need for such a curriculum. Subsequent literature reviews and series of global Delphi studies have informed and guided the design and development of the conceptual framework, core curriculum content and finally, the implementation framework to facilitate the smooth delivery of the programme. The research also incorporated pilot studies for teaching methodology, assessment strategies like “objective structured practical examination (OSPE) and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)”, which has shown to be very effective. The conceptual framework for curriculum design and development in NSA emerged from the global Delphi study. The conceptual framework is anchored on critical thinking and uses enquiry-based learning to develop information mastery, skills, and values and attitude. Moreover, relevant threshold concepts guided the construction of learning outcomes mapped against the core curriculum. The finding of this study is a crucial first step in bringing an evidence-based structure to training and education in NSA. This thesis will act as a ‘blueprint’ for the policymakers and program directors while curating a postgraduate programme in NSA

    Analysis and Construction of Engaging Facial Forms and Expressions: Interdisciplinary Approaches from Art, Anatomy, Engineering, Cultural Studies, and Psychology

    The topic of this dissertation is the anatomical, psychological, and cultural examination of a human face in order to effectively construct an anatomy-driven 3D virtual face customization and action model. In order to gain a broad perspective of all aspects of a face, theories and methodology from the fields of art, engineering, anatomy, psychology, and cultural studies have been analyzed and implemented. The computer generated facial customization and action model were designed based on the collected data. Using this customization system, culturally-specific attractive face in Korean popular culture, “kot-mi-nam (flower-like beautiful guy),” was modeled and analyzed as a case study. The “kot-mi-nam” phenomenon is overviewed in textual, visual, and contextual aspects, which reveals the gender- and sexuality-fluidity of its masculinity. The analysis and the actual development of the model organically co-construct each other requiring an interwoven process. Chapter 1 introduces anatomical studies of a human face, psychological theories of face recognition and an attractive face, and state-of-the-art face construction projects in the various fields. Chapter 2 and 3 present the Bezier curve-based 3D facial customization (BCFC) and Multi-layered Facial Action Model (MFAF) based on the analysis of human anatomy, to achieve a cost-effective yet realistic quality of facial animation without using 3D scanned data. In the experiments, results for the facial customization for gender, race, fat, and age showed that BCFC achieved enhanced performance of 25.20% compared to existing program Facegen , and 44.12% compared to Facial Studio. The experimental results also proved the realistic quality and effectiveness of MFAM compared with blend shape technique by enhancing 2.87% and 0.03% of facial area for happiness and anger expressions per second, respectively. In Chapter 4, according to the analysis based on BCFC, the 3D face of an average kot-mi-nam is close to gender neutral (male: 50.38%, female: 49.62%), and Caucasian (66.42-66.40%). Culturally-specific images can be misinterpreted in different cultures, due to their different languages, histories, and contexts. This research demonstrates that facial images can be affected by the cultural tastes of the makers and can also be interpreted differently by viewers in different cultures
