Genetic programming for the automatic design of controllers for a surface ship

    Get PDF
In this paper, the implementation of genetic programming (GP) to design a contoller structure is assessed. GP is used to evolve control strategies that, given the current and desired state of the propulsion and heading dynamics of a supply ship as inputs, generate the command forces required to maneuver the ship. The controllers created using GP are evaluated through computer simulations and real maneuverability tests in a laboratory water basin facility. The robustness of each controller is analyzed through the simulation of environmental disturbances. In addition, GP runs in the presence of disturbances are carried out so that the different controllers obtained can be compared. The particular vessel used in this paper is a scale model of a supply ship called CyberShip II. The results obtained illustrate the benefits of using GP for the automatic design of propulsion and navigation controllers for surface ships

Continuous time controller based on SMC and disturbance observer for piezoelectric actuators

Abstract ā€“ In this work, analog application for the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) to piezoelectric actuators (PEA) is presented. DSP application of the algorithm suffers from ADC and DAC conversions and mainly faces limitations in sampling time interval. Moreover piezoelectric actuators are known to have very large bandwidth close to the DSP operation frequency. Therefore, with the direct analog application, improvement of the performance and high frequency operation are expected. Design of an appropriate SMC together with a disturbance observer is suggested to have continuous control output and related experimental results for position tracking are presented with comparison of DSP and analog control application

In recent years, with the development of sensor technologies, communication platforms, cyber-physical systems, storage technologies, internet applications and controller infrastructures, the way has been opened to produce competitive products with high quality and low cost. In turning, which is one of the important processes of machining, chatter vibrations are among the biggest problems affecting product quality, productivity and cost. There are many techniques proposed to reduce chatter vibrations for which the exact cause cannot be determined. In this study, an active vibration control based on the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) has been implemented in order to reduce and eliminate chatter vibration, which is undesirable for the turning process. In this context, three-axis acceleration data were collected from the cutting tool during the turning of Ti6Al4V. Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filtering, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis and integral process were carried out in order to use the raw acceleration data collected over the system in control. The system is modeled mathematically and an active control block diagram is created. It is observed that chattering decreased significantly after the application of active vibration control. The surface quality formed by the amplitude of the graph obtained after active control has been compared and verified with the data obtained from the actual manufacturing result

Ā© 2019, Levrotto and Bella. All rights reserved. Electric vehicles are the future of private passenger transportation. However, there are still several technological barriers that hinder the large scale adoption of electric vehicles. In particular, their limited autonomy motivates studies on methods for improving the energy efficiency of electric vehicles so as to make them more attractive to the market. This paper provides a concise review on the current state-of-the-art of torque distribution strategies aimed at enhancing energy efficiency for fully electric vehicles with independently actuated drivetrains (FEVIADs). Starting from the operating principles, which include the "control allocation" problem, the peculiarities of each proposed solution are illustrated. All the existing techniques are categorized based on a selection of parameters deemed relevant to provide a comprehensive overview and understanding of the topic. Finally, future concerns and research perspectives for FEVIAD are discussed

An investigation into reducing the spindle acceleration energy consumption of machine tools

Machine tools are widely used in the manufacturing industry, and consume large amount of energy. Spindle acceleration appears frequently while machine tools are working. It produces power peak which is highly energy intensive. As a result, a considerable amount of energy is consumed by this acceleration during the use phase of machine tools. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the energy consumption of spindle acceleration. Therefore, this research aims to model the spindle acceleration energy consumption of computer numerical control (CNC) lathes, and to investigate potential approaches to reduce this part of consumption. The proposed model is based on the principle of spindle motor control and includes the calculation of moment of inertia for spindle drive system. Experiments are carried out based on a CNC lathe to validate the proposed model. The approaches for reducing the spindle acceleration energy consumption were developed. On the machine level, the approaches include avoiding unnecessary stopping and restarting of the spindle, shortening the acceleration time, lightweight design, proper use and maintenance of the spindle. On the system level, a machine tool selection criterion is developed for energy saving. Results show that the energy can be reduced by 10.6% to more than 50% using these approaches, most of which are practical and easy to implement
