Interdisciplinary working in service design: case studies for designing touch points
The paper argues that interdisciplinary design can be successful in services design. It offers information about 2 case studies in which interdisciplinary teams address design services problems. The paper explains the design method employed in the case studies. It also identifies “user design centred” as the main concept that drove the design approach. It explains the meaning of “user centred design”, of “services design” and highlights the importance of “interdisciplinary services design”. The paper also offers a framework for interdisciplinary working in service design.

Specification of vertical semantic consistency rules of UML class diagram refinement using logical approach
Unified Modelling Language (UML) is the most popular modelling language use for
software design in software development industries with a class diagram being the
most frequently use diagram. Despite the popularity of UML, it is being affected by
inconsistency problems of its diagrams at the same or different abstraction levels.
Inconsistency in UML is mostly caused by existence of various views on the same
system and sometimes leads to potentially conflicting system specifications. In
general, syntactic consistency can be automatically checked and therefore is
supported by current UML Computer-aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools.
Semantic consistency problems, unlike syntactic consistency problems, there exists
no specific method for specifying semantic consistency rules and constraints.
Therefore, this research has specified twenty-four abstraction rules of class‟s relation
semantic among any three related classes of a refined class diagram to semantically
equivalent relations of two of the classes using a logical approach. This research has
also formalized three vertical semantic consistency rules of a class diagram
refinement identified by previous researchers using a logical approach and a set of
formalized abstraction rules. The results were successfully evaluated using hotel
management system and passenger list system case studies and were found to be
reliable and efficient
The Significance of the European Citizens' Initiative for Pan-European Participatory Democracy
The Lisbon Treaty has introduced a new Article 11 of the Treaty on European Union (TUE) that creates a European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) allowing one million citizens from a significant number of member states to invite the European Commission to submit a proposal within the framework of its powers. The ECI fully entered into force on 1 June 2012 when all the elements established by Regulation 211/2011 were ready and the first initiatives were registered. This is thus an ideal time to analyse the significance of the ECI as an example of a transnational participatory democracy mechanism. Article 11 of the TUE introduces different forms of citizens' participation. The first paragraph mandates EU institutions to encourage the expression of civil society at European level. Paragraph 2 instructs EU institutions to establish regular relations with representative associations and civil society, whereas paragraph 3 orders the Commission (not all institutions) to consult 'parties concerned' in the process of making legislation. The ECI is only introduced in paragraph 4 of the article
An improved tool of water data analytics for flowmeters data
This paper presents an improved tool for data validation and reconstruction of flowmeters. These sensors are installed in the Catalonia regional water network from Barcelona (Spain). Here a new time series model with exogenous variable is proposed with excellent results for data validation. It is postulated that the integration of the electronics alarms, along with other tests about the daily data accumulated and a later analysis of the data reconstruction allow to improve the results of the existing tools. This is accomplished by decreasing the false alarms and missing alarms of more than 6000 hourly data retrieved from more than 200 flowmeters each day. This new tool provides reliable information daily reliable information of the state of the water network. This information could potentially contribute to optimally control and manage this large and complex water network.Postprint (published version
Modified Stage-Gate: A Conceptual Model of Virtual Product Development Process
In today s dynamic marketplace, manufacturing companies are under strong
pressure to introduce new products for long-term survival with their
competitors. Nevertheless, every company cannot cope up progressively or
immediately with the market requirements due to knowledge dynamics being
experienced in the competitive milieu. Increased competition and reduced
product life cycles put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In
response to these pressing needs, there should be some new approach compatible
in flexible circumstances. This paper presents a solution based on the popular
Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with virtual team approach. Virtual
teams can provide a platform to advance the knowledge-base in a company and
thus to reduce time-to-market. This article introduces conceptual product
development architecture under a virtual team umbrella. The paper describes all
the major aspects of new product development (NPD), NPD process and its
relationship with virtual teams, Stage-Gate system finally presents a modified
Stage-Gate system to cope up with the changing needs. It also provides the
guidelines for the successful implementation of virtual teams in new product
development.Comment: 24 page
