Methodologies for CIM systems integration in small batch manufacturing
This thesis is concerned with identifying the problems and constraints faced by
small batch manufacturing companies during the implementation of Computer
Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). The main aim of this work is to recommend
generic solutions to these problems with particular regard to those constraints
arising because of the need for ClM systems integration involving both new and
existing systems and procedures. The work has involved the application of
modern computer technologies, including suitable hardware and software tools, in
an industrial environment.
Since the research has been undertaken with particular emphasis on the industrial
implementor's viewpoint, it is supported by the results of a two phased
implementation of computer based control systems within the machine shop of a
manufacturing company. This involved the specific implementation of a
Distributed Numerical Control system on a single machine in a group technology
cell of machines followed by the evolution of this system into Cell and Machine
Management Systems to provide a comprehensive decision support and
information distribution facility for the foremen and uperators within the cell. The
work also required the integration of these systems with existing Factory level
manufacturing control and CADCAM functions. Alternative approaches have
been investigated which may have been applicable under differing conditions and
the implications that this specific work has for CIM systems integration in small
batch manufacturing companies evaluated with regard not only to the users within
an industrial company but also the systems suppliers external to the company.
The work has resulted in certain generic contributions to knowledge by
complementing ClM systems integration research with regard to problems
encountered; cost implications; the use of appropriate methodologies including
the role of emerging international standard methods, tools and technologies and
also the importance of 'human integration' when implementing CIM systems in a
real industrial situation
Towards a flexible service integration through separation of business rules
Driven by dynamic market demands, enterprises are continuously exploring collaborations with others to add value to their services and seize new market opportunities. Achieving enterprise collaboration is facilitated by Enterprise Application Integration and Business-to-Business approaches that employ architectural paradigms like Service Oriented Architecture and incorporate technological advancements in networking and computing. However, flexibility remains a major challenge related to enterprise collaboration. How can changes in demands and opportunities be reflected in collaboration solutions with minimum time and effort and with maximum reuse of existing applications? This paper proposes an approach towards a more flexible integration of enterprise applications in the context of service mediation. We achieve this by combining goal-based, model-driven and serviceoriented approaches. In particular, we pay special attention to the separation of business rules from the business process of the integration solution. Specifying the requirements as goal models, we separate those parts which are more likely to evolve over time in terms of business rules. These business rules are then made executable by exposing them as Web services and incorporating them into the design of the business process.\ud
Thus, should the business rules change, the business process remains unaffected. Finally, this paper also provides an evaluation of the flexibility of our solution in relation to the current work in business process flexibility research
Multi-agent systems for power engineering applications - part 2 : Technologies, standards and tools for building multi-agent systems
This is the second part of a 2-part paper that has arisen from the work of the IEEE Power Engineering Society's Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) Working Group. Part 1 of the paper examined the potential value of MAS technology to the power industry, described fundamental concepts and approaches within the field of multi-agent systems that are appropriate to power engineering applications, and presented a comprehensive review of the power engineering applications for which MAS are being investigated. It also defined the technical issues which must be addressed in order to accelerate and facilitate the uptake of the technology within the power and energy sector. Part 2 of the paper explores the decisions inherent in engineering multi-agent systems for applications in the power and energy sector and offers guidance and recommendations on how MAS can be designed and implemented. Given the significant and growing interest in this field, it is imperative that the power engineering community considers the standards, tools, supporting technologies and design methodologies available to those wishing to implement a MAS solution for a power engineering problem. The paper describes the various options available and makes recommendations on best practice. It also describes the problem of interoperability between different multi-agent systems and proposes how this may be tackled

Combining goal-oriented and model-driven approaches to solve the Payment Problem Scenario
Motivated by the objective to provide an improved participation of business domain experts in the design of service-oriented integration solutions, we extend our previous work on using the COSMO methodology for service mediation by introducing a goal-oriented approach to requirements engineering. With this approach, business requirements including the motivations behind the mediation solution are better understood, specified, and aligned with their technical implementations. Embedding Requirements within the Model Driven Architecture
The Model Driven Architecture (MDA) brings benefits to software development, among them the potential for connecting software models with the business domain. This paper focuses on the upstream or Computation Independent Model (CIM) phase of the MDA. Our contention is that, whilst there are many models and notations available within the CIM Phase, those that are currently popular and supported by the Object Management Group (OMG), may not be the most useful notations for business analysts nor sufficient to fully support software requirements and specification.
Therefore, with specific emphasis on the value of the Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) for business analysts, this paper provides an example of a typical CIM approach before describing an approach which incorporates specific requirements techniques. A framework extension to the MDA is then introduced; which embeds requirements and specification within the CIM, thus further enhancing the utility of MDA by providing a more complete method for business analysis
Coordinate-invariant Path Integral Methods in Conformal Field Theory
We present a coordinate-invariant approach, based on a Pauli-Villars measure,
to the definition of the path integral in two-dimensional conformal field
theory. We discuss some advantages of this approach compared to the operator
formalism and alternative path integral approaches. We show that our path
integral measure is invariant under conformal transformations and field
reparametrizations, in contrast to the measure used in the Fujikawa
calculation, and we show the agreement, despite different origins, of the
conformal anomaly in the two approaches. The natural energy-momentum in the
Pauli-Villars approach is a true coordinate-invariant tensor quantity, and we
discuss its nontrivial relationship to the corresponding non-tensor object
arising in the operator formalism, thus providing a novel explanation within a
path integral context for the anomalous Ward identities of the latter. We
provide a direct calculation of the nontrivial contact terms arising in
expectation values of certain energy-momentum products, and we use these to
perform a simple consistency check confirming the validity of the change of
variables formula for the path integral. Finally, we review the relationship
between the conformal anomaly and the energy-momentum two-point functions in

Computer integrated manufacturing in the chemical industry: Theory & practice
This paper addresses the possibilities of implementing Computer Integrated Manufacturing in the process industry, and the chemical industry in particular. After presenting some distinct differences of the process industry in relation to discrete manufacturing, a number of focal points are discussed. They identify the adaptations to be made to a conventional CIM system, so that it will be applicable to the process industry.
