    Stochastic evaluation of sewer inlet capacity on urban pluvial flooding

    In this paper we present an innovative methodology to stochastically assess the impact of sewer inlet conditions on urban pluvial flooding. The results showed that sewer inlet capacity can have a large impact on the occurrence of urban pluvial flooding. The methodology is a useful tool for dealing with uncertainties in sewer inlet operational conditions and contribute to comprehensive assessment of urban pluvial risk assessment

    Effects of external nutrient sources and extreme weather events on the nutrient budget of a Southern European coastal lagoon

    The seasonal and annual nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and carbon (C) budgets of the mesotidal Ria Formosa lagoon, southern Portugal, were estimated to reveal the main inputs and outputs, the seasonal patterns, and how they may influence the ecological functioning of the system. The effects of extreme weather events such as long-lasting strong winds causing upwelling and strong rainfall were assessed. External nutrient inputs were quantified; ocean exchange was assessed in 24-h sampling campaigns, and final calculations were made using a hydrodynamic model of the lagoon. Rain and stream inputs were the main freshwater sources to the lagoon. However, wastewater treatment plant and groundwater discharges dominated nutrient input, together accounting for 98, 96, and 88 % of total C, N, and P input, respectively. Organic matter and nutrients were continuously exported to the ocean. This pattern was reversed following extreme events, such as strong winds in early summer that caused upwelling and after a period of heavy rainfall in late autumn. A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that ammonium and organic N and C exchange were positively associated with temperature as opposed to pH and nitrate. These variables reflected mostly the benthic lagoon metabolism, whereas particulate P exchange was correlated to Chl a, indicating that this was more related to phytoplankton dynamics.     Surficial sediment texture database for the south-western Iberian Atlantic margin

    Assessing the impact of changes on the environment driven by natural or anthropogenic forcers includes the comparison between antecedent and post-event conditions. The latter is particularly relevant in order to better understand to which extent those changes actually impact or alter a particular environment and associated services and to determine the resilience of a system. In this regard, it becomes essential to create or provide databases to inform about baseline conditions. Here, we present a database that integrates surficial sediment samples collected and analysed for textural characterization within the framework of a series of research projects over circa 20 years. Collected samples along the south-western Atlantic margin of the Iberian Peninsula extend from estuaries and beaches to the adjacent continental shelf. For the case of the more dynamic environments, namely coastal sandy barriers, samples were repeated over time in order to capture the intrinsic variability of the system. Examples of the utility of this data set for a variety of purposes and environments are also included within this paper through three examples. Therefore, here we show the added value of the database as it can be used to assess the impact of a particular event or activity at an estuary by providing baseline conditions, evaluate the continental shelf sediment suitability for nourishment activities, or contribute to the understanding of the morphodynamics and classification of beaches.     Surrogate-based optimization of tidal turbine arrays: a case study for the Faro-Olhão inlet

    This paper presents a study for estimating the size of a tidal turbine array for the Faro-Olhão Inlet (Potugal) using a surrogate optimization approach. The method compromises problem formulation, hydro-morphodynamic modelling, surrogate construction and validation, and constraint optimization. A total of 26 surrogates were built using linear RBFs as a function of two design variables: number of rows in the array and Tidal Energy Converters (TECs) per row. Surrogates describe array performance and environmental effects associated with hydrodynamic and morphological aspects of the multi inlet lagoon. After validation, surrogate models were used to formulate a constraint optimization model.     On the use of semi-distributed and fully-distributed urban stormwater models

    Urban stormwater models comprise four main components: rainfall, rainfall-runoff, overland flow and sewer flow modules. They can be considered semi-distributed (SD) or fully distributed (FD) according to the rainfall-runoff module definition. SD models are based on sub-catchments units through which rainfall is applied to the model and at which runoff volumes are estimated. In FD models, the runoff volumes are estimated and applied directly on every element of a twodimensional (2D) model of the surface. This poster presents a comparison of SD and FD models based on two case studies: Zona Central catchment at Coimbra, Portugal, and Cranbrook catchment at London, UK. SD and FD modelling results are compared against water depth and flow records in sewers, and photographic records of a flood event. In general, FD models are theoretically more realistic and physically-based, but the results of this study suggest that the implementation of these models requires higher resolution (more detailed) elevation, land use and sewer network data than is normally used in the implementation of SD models. Failing to use higher resolution data for the implementation of FD models could result in poor-performing models. In cases when high resolution data are not available, the use of SD models could be a better choice

    Lagoon water-level oscillations driven by rainfall and wave climate

    Barrier breaching and subsequent inlet formation represent critical processes that ensure the temporary or permanent connection and transference of water, nutrients, or living organisms between a lagoon and the open sea. Here, we investigate the conditions inducing natural barrier breaching through a 34 months monitoring program of water-level oscillations within a shallow lagoon and the adjacent nearshore, at the Northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Louro lagoon. Seven natural openings were identified to have occurred during the three monitored wet seasons, from the 2009 to 2012, (Wet1, Wet2 and Wet3); four in the Wetl, two in the Wet2 and one in. the Wet3. The openings were grouped in three types depending on the observed relation between the lagoon water-level (L-wl), the estimated berm height (B-h) and the water-level at the beach (B-wl): (i) openings by lagoon outflow, which include those characterized by L-wl higher than B-h and lower B-wl; (ii) openings by wave inundation, including those induced by B-wl higher than B-h, and (iii) mixed openings, which result from a combination of the two previous conditions. We observed that L-wl is modulated by the rainfall regime (R-f) and can be explained by the accumulated precipitation. We estimated applying runup equations to obtain B-h and B-wl which depend on the wave climate and tidal level. The inlet lifespan was found to be regulated by the wave climate and rainfall regime; in particular barrier sealing was associated with a sudden increase in wave period and a reduction in precipitation.     Characterization of Natural Ventilation Systems in Residential Buildings in Portugal - The Importance of Standardization

    The technical recommendations regarding ventilation in various countries propose average rates of one hourly renewal in main rooms (bedrooms and living/dining rooms) and four renewals per hour in service rooms (kitchens and bathrooms). Most recently built residential buildings in Portugal may not comply with these rates. The adoption of “general and permanent ventilation” systems is essential. A survey was conducted in the spring of 2000 with the purpose of characterizing the ventilation systems of residential buildings under construction. Questionnaires were sent to 6700 construction companies in the northern region. Answers were obtained regarding 2700 dwellings, the main conclusions of which are presented in this article.     Experimental Characterization of Hybrid Ventilation Systems in Residential Buildings

    In the recent past, residential buildings in temperate climates were ventilated by the daily opening of windows and by exaggerated window and door permeability. Energy conservation concerns have led to better quality windows and lower air permeability that consequently increased the risk of condensation whilst decreasing indoor air quality. Because of the variation in natural factors, such as wind speed and the stack effect, natural ventilation systems are unlikely to permanently provide ideal ventilation rates. As such, we will characterize the performance of hybrid ventilation systems (air intake through automatically regulated louvers in bedrooms and living rooms, natural exhaust in bathrooms and fan exhaust systems in kitchens) that are a possible solution to this drawback. In March of 2002 and January of 2003, we measured air change rates in a 2-bedroom apartment using the PFT technique. This method has the advantage of measuring air renewal rates in inhabited apartments during a reasonable period and thereby reveals air renewal rates in the dwelling and also in each compartment. This article will demonstrate the results obtained at a standard apartment and will present the experimental study characterising the hybrid ventilation system in a 100-apartment residential complex in the Porto area.     Extensional flow of Newtonian and Boger fluids through a flow focusing microdevice

The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Thessaly, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute.In this work we perform a numerical and experimental study on the flow of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids through a microfluidic device in which hydrodynamic flow focusing is produced using two balanced lateral sheath streams that shape a third inlet stream. The flow focusing device used was conceived to achieve a nearly constant extensional rate along the centerline and is shaped much like a conventional cross-slot except for comprising three inlets and one exit channel. The work undertaken comprises experimental flow visualization as well as 2D and 3D numerical calculations using a finite volume method. The Newtonian fluid used in the experiments was distilled water and the viscoelastic fluid was an aqueous solution containing 125 ppm (w/w) of polyacrylamide (PAA, Mw = 18×10(6) g/mol), to which 1% of salt (NaCl) was added. The addition of salt to a shear-thinning PAA solution resulted in a low viscosity Boger fluid, i.e., a viscoelastic fluid with a nearly constant viscosity. The combination of small length scales characteristic of microfluidics with this type of fluid allows us to observe strong elastic effects in the absence of shear-thinning and inertial effects (or at least when these effects are weak). We report a rich variety of flow features, which depend on the fluid used as well as on the operational conditions.
