    Down to Earth Archaeology

    Down to Earth Archaeology collects sixteen archaeological papers by Professor William Y. Adams chosen by the author, who added introductory commentary to each. These articles were written at various times during his lengthy and productive academic career for different purposes and for different audiences. Most of those selected had been previously published only in a limited way, either as conference proceedings or contributions to various Festschriften, and as such he wanted to enable them to reach a wider readership than they had originally. He described this collection as his ‘dernières pensées’. The essays encompass a wide range of topics, from reflections upon the successes, failures and lessons learned from the UNESCO International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia in the 1960s, in which Bill was very much a leading figure and which he was uniquely positioned to critique, to discussions and criticisms of the theoretical framework of ‘New’ or ‘Processual Archaeology’ and its application of ‘scientific’ methods. Other papers included here are seminal works discussing the ideological concepts of typology and classification and their practical application to archaeological excavations, notably his own major excavations conducted at the large Nubian cityscapes of Meinarti, Kulubnarti and Qasr Ibrim, and the ceramic kilns at Faras.

    Aquatic Insects

    Insects have successfully inhabited all freshwater habitats on Earth and are often the most diverse and abundant species in streams and ponds. With a disproportionally high species richness compared to the area covered by freshwaters, aquatic insects represent a hotspot of diversity. They play crucial roles in aquatic food webs as primary consumers, detritivores, and predators, but they also represent an important food resource for aquatic and terrestrial predators. Many aquatic insect orders, such as mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies, include taxa that are highly sensitive to habitat alterations, reflecting the health of the overall aquatic ecosystem. This feature is exploited by many scientists and practitioners around the world for water and environment quality monitoring. Despite their importance in term of diversity, ecosystem services and bioindication, many aquatic insect species are critically endangered, mainly due to anthropogenic pressures on freshwaters and climate change. Although the research efforts on aquatic insects tremendously increased during the 21st century, much is still left undiscovered. This Special Issue addresses existing knowledge gaps and increases our understanding of taxonomic diversity and phylogeny, distribution patterns, and community ecology of aquatic insects through 15 new studies that cover most of the aquatic insect orders over a wide geographic range.     Neolithic land-use in the Dutch wetlands: estimating the land-use implications of resource exploitation strategies in the Middle Swifterbant Culture (4600-3900 BCE)

    The Dutch wetlands witness the gradual adoption of Neolithic novelties by foraging societies during the Swifterbant period. Recent analyses provide new insights into the subsistence palette of Middle Swifterbant societies. Small-scale livestock herding and cultivation are in evidence at this time, but their importance if unclear. Within the framework of PAGES Land-use at 6000BP project, we aim to translate the information on resource exploitation into information on land-use that can be incorporated into global climate modelling efforts, with attention for the importance of agriculture. A reconstruction of patterns of resource exploitation and their land-use dimensions is complicated by methodological issues in comparing the results of varied recent investigations. Analyses of organic residues in ceramics have attested to the cooking of aquatic foods, ruminant meat, porcine meat, as well as rare cases of dairy. In terms of vegetative matter, some ceramics exclusively yielded evidence of wild plants, while others preserve cereal remains. Elevated δ15N values of human were interpreted as demonstrating an important aquatic component of the diet well into the 4th millennium BC. Yet recent assays on livestock remains suggest grazing on salt marshes partly accounts for the human values. Finally, renewed archaeozoological investigations have shown the early presence of domestic animals to be more limited than previously thought. We discuss the relative importance of exploited resources to produce a best-fit interpretation of changing patterns of land-use during the Middle Swifterbant phase. Our review combines recent archaeological data with wider data on anthropogenic influence on the landscape. Combining the results of plant macroremains, information from pollen cores about vegetation development, the structure of faunal assemblages, and finds of arable fields and dairy residue, we suggest the most parsimonious interpretation is one of a limited land-use footprint of cultivation and livestock keeping in Dutch wetlands between 4600 and 3900 BCE.NWOVidi 276-60-004Human Origin

    Taphonomy, environment or human plant exploitation strategies?: Deciphering changes in Pleistocene-Holocene plant representation at Umhlatuzana rockshelter, South Africa

    The period between ~40 and 20 ka BP encompassing the Middle Stone Age (MSA) and Later Stone Age (LSA) transition has long been of interest because of the associated technological change. Understanding this transition in southern Africa is complicated by the paucity of archaeological sites that span this period. With its occupation sequence spanning the last ~70,000 years, Umhlatuzana Rock Shelter is one of the few sites that record this transition. Umhlatuzana thus offers a great opportunity to study past environmental dynamics from the Late Pleistocene (MIS 4) to the Late Holocene, and past human subsistence strategies, their social organisation, technological and symbolic innovations. Although organic preservation is poor (bones, seeds, and charcoal) at the site, silica phytoliths preserve generally well throughout the sequence. These microscopic silica particles can identify different plant types that are no longer visible at the site because of decomposition or burning to a reliable taxonomical level. Thus, to trace site occupation, plant resource use, and in turn reconstruct past vegetation, we applied phytolith analyses to sediment samples of the newly excavated Umhlatuzana sequence. We present results of the phytolith assemblage variability to determine change in plant use from the Pleistocene to the Holocene and discuss them in relation to taphonomical processes and human plant gathering strategies and activities.     Integrative systematic structuring of the widespread psammophiid snakes (Psammophiidae): a multi-evidence species delineation approach

    Species form the foundations upon which we build our understanding of the natural world. Although a focus of much scientific attention, our understanding of species is stunted by the intrinsic ‘fuzziness’ of boundaries within nature. Due to the complexity of the evolutionary process, coupled with an ever-changing abiotic landscape, species are hard to delineate, even at the best of times. Whilst various species concepts and sophisticated delimitation methods have helped scientists tease apart species, many species complexes persist. This is because taxonomy is a discrete ordering system imposed upon the continuous and intercalated structure of life. To improve our understanding of a wide-ranging family of snakes, I investigated the taxonomy and evolutionary structuring within Psammophiidae using both molecular and morphological approaches, employing phylogenetic, phylogeographic, and morphometric analyses on the group. The systematic complexity of the family (as evidenced by past research) coupled with the group’s widespread distribution and ecological importance, made the taxon an ideal candidate for a broad-sweeping multi-level systematic analysis using multiple species delimitation methods. Additionally, in this thesis I attempted to build on the ground-breaking work of Christopher Kelly by addressing several knowledge gaps identified within the family, and in so doing, produce the most thorough evolutionary and taxonomic study of Psammophiidae possible. Given the taxonomic uncertainty associated with the family, Chapter Two used a representative sampling from every available species (near complete taxon sampling approach) in the family. The chapter used both standard and time-calibrated phylogenetic modelling and distance/threshold-based species delimitation, to elucidate the finer-level structuring within the family. Geometric morphometrics was used to determine whether there were diagnosable differences in head structure between the different genera. The final phylogenetic tree incorporated 320 samples, representing the most comprehensive phylogenetic reconstruction of the family to date. By using a near-complete taxon sampling approach, I was able to resolve previously unsupported relationships within the family whilst also identifying several novel instances of an under- and over-appreciation of species diversity within the family. Geometric morphometrics also identified clear distinctions between genera based on head shape (head width and ‘beakedness’). This chapter showcased the importance of complete taxon sampling and robust methodology for species delimitation and the deleterious effect of species concepts when implemented in isolation. In Chapter Three, I narrowed the scope of the study to focus on the genus level. Psammophylax (Fitzinger 1843) is an abundant, yet poorly studied genus of grass snakes, endemic to Africa. The generalist nature of the genus and wide-spanning distributions of the constituent species has given rise to several subspecies and a poor understanding of the taxonomic structuring within the genus. The overlapping distributions (sympatry) of many of Psammophylax species, coupled with the potential for cryptic speciation via mechanisms such as convergent evolution, made the group the ideal candidate for a broad-sweeping systematic study (as evidenced in Chapter Two). By applying the suite of analyses used in Chapter Two to the generic level, we aimed to determine the effectiveness of a multi-evidence species delineation approach when tackling systematic problems at lower taxonomic levels. A genetic phylogeny of six of the seven species was estimated using multiple phylogenetic and distance/ threshold-based species delimitation methods. To support the molecular analyses, we conducted morphological analyses on the body (traditional morphology) and head (geometric morphometrics) separately. Phylogenetic analyses recovered a similar topology to past studies, but with better resolution and node support. I found substantial genetic structuring within the genus, supported by significantly different head shapes between Ps. a. acutus and other Psammophylax species. Psammophylax a. acutus was recovered as sister to its congeners, and sequence divergence values and morphometrics supported its recognition as a new genus. Increased sampling in East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia) revealed that Psammophylax multisquamis is polyphyletic, necessitating the description of a new, morphologically cryptic, species from northern Tanzania. The distribution of Ps. multisquamis sensu stricto is likely restricted to Kenya and Ethiopia. Within this chapter, taxon-specific phylogenetic analyses yielded stronger intrageneric support as compared to Chapter Two, allowing for more defensible conclusions about taxonomical amendments. Geometric morphometrics proved similarly useful (as compared to Chapter Two) in teasing apart genera within the family but lacked the robustness to delineate species within Psammophylax with confidence, highlighting the apparent convergence of form within the genus. In Chapter Four, I investigated the evolutionary structuring within the Southern African endemic Psammophylax rhombeatus. The structural and environmental heterogeneity within the region has given rise to many morphological forms distributed throughout the country, with previous studies neglecting the associated molecular significance of these forms. Irrespective of their small sample sizes, both Chapter Two and Three identified substantial phylogenetic structuring within the species, making Ps. rhombeatus the ideal candidate for a multi-faceted systematic review, using a combination of phylogenetics, geometric morphometrics and, for the first time in this species, phylogeographic analyses. By investigating a single species, in detail, I was able to assess the effectiveness of the methodologies implemented in previous chapters on systematic sorting using the multi-evidence species delineation approach. Phylogenetic and haplotype analysis retrieved four well-supported clades: southeast South Africa (SESA), southwest South Africa (SWSA), north-eastern South Africa (NESA) and western South Africa (WSA). Although not variable enough to warrant taxonomic re-evaluation, the clades represented important genetic hotspots, with relatively high intraspecific genetic divergence values separating them, irrespective of the small geographic distances separating populations. This is likely a product of the taxon’s habitat-generalist lifestyle, enabling them to bypass vicariant barriers that might otherwise cause speciation in less versatile species. The clades are also geographically distinct, with little overlap, indicating previous vicariance, a finding that is supported by the split of Ps. rhombeatus from Ps. ocellatus in the mid-Pliocene, followed by the diversification of Ps. rhombeatus into four clades throughout the Pleistocene. The genetic structuring observed in Ps. rhombeatus may be a product of population expansion following ancient refugial isolation (potentially Last Glacial Maximum [LGM]). The molecular distinctiveness of the clades was not replicated in the morphological component of this chapter, with neither dorsal nor lateral geometric morphometric analyses of head shape showing any discernible distinctiveness based on geography. Whilst head shape has not been shown to be an effective delineator of evolutionary units at the species level (within this taxon), body colour, scalation, and snout-vent length has been linked to morphotypes within the species based on the work of Broadley (1966). These morphological groupings are loosely attributable to the molecular clades identified in the phylogenetic analyses, highlighting the complex interplay of genetic and morphological characteristics in the process of speciation, and their representation in systematic accounts. This thesis represents the most thorough evolutionary and systematic study of the family currently possible. In addition to identifying and describing both a new genus and species, this thesis also highlighted several instances of an over- and under-appreciation of species diversity within Psammophiidae. By applying a multi-evidence species delineation approach to this thesis, I show the intricacy of the evolutionary process (at various taxonomic levels) and showcase the ease to which species boundaries can be confounded when species concepts are implemented in isolation. These findings also highlighted the importance of sample size, sample range, species delimitation method on the outcome of taxonomic analyses, and their interpretation. Lastly, this thesis addressed the knowledge gaps left by Christopher Kelly’s PhD work and investigated the findings of recent papers that attempted to do the same. Whilst this study answers the questions of old, the taxon-intensive focus revealed several new knowledge gaps within the family, highlighting how much we know about snake systematics, and furthermore, how much we still need to learn about evolutionary structuring.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Environmental Science, 202

    Bronze Age Tell Communities in Context

    Practice – The Social, Space, and Materiality forms the second part of Bronze Age Tell Communities in Context: An exploration into culture, society, and the study of European prehistory. It studies Bronze Age tells and our approaches towards an understanding of this fascinating way of life, drawing on the material remains of long-term architectural stability and references back to ancestral place. While the first volume challenged Neo-Diffusionist models of the influence of Mediterranean palatial centres on the development of tell communities in the Carpathians and an attendant focus on social stratification, the second part sets out an alternative theoretical approach, which foregrounds architecture and the social use of space. Unlike the reductionist macro perspective of mainstream social modelling, inspired by aspects of practice theory outlined in this book, the account given seeks to allow for what is truly remarkable about these sites, and what we can infer from them about the way of life they once framed and enabled. The stability seen on tells, and their apparent lack of change on a macro scale, are specific features of the social field, in a given region and for a specific period of time. Both stability and change are contingent upon specific historical contexts, including traditional practices, their material setting and human intentionality. They are not an inherent, given property of this or that ‘type’ of society or social structure. For our tells, it is argued here, underneath the specific manifestation of sociality maintained, we clearly do see social practices and corresponding material arrangements being negotiated and adjusted. Echoing the argument laid out in the first part of this study, it is suggested that archaeology should take an interest in such processes on the micro scale, rather than succumb to the temptation of neat macro history and great narratives existing aloof from the material remains of past lives

    The princely seats' interaction relationships clearly show that distant places or groups of people appear particularly intensively as interaction partners, while in some cases even the surrounding groups appear culturally alien. The more locally distributed artefacts partly offset this impression; for example, the pottery type combinations occasionally show a local connection of the princely seats. This preferential interaction with distant groups creates precisely this strangeness to the local spectrum and highlights the princely seats' unique find association. The often reoccurring cultural dissimilarity of the Swabian Alb to the princely seats is striking, which cannot only be explained by the source-critical effects, like an inevitable dominance of burial mounds on the Swabian Alb with lacking settlements

    Ways and Capacity in Archaeological Data Management in Serbia

    Over the past year and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire world has witnessed inequalities across borders and societies. They also include access to archaeological resources, both physical and digital. Both archaeological data creators and users spent a lot of time working from their homes, away from artefact collections and research data. However, this was the perfect moment to understand the importance of making data freely and openly available, both nationally and internationally. This is why the authors of this paper chose to make a selection of data bases from various institutions responsible for preservation and protection of cultural heritage, in order to understand their policies regarding accessibility and usage of the data they keep. This will be done by simple visits to various web-sites or data bases. They intend to check on the volume and content, but also importance of the offered archaeological heritage. In addition, the authors will estimate whether the heritage has adequately been classified and described and also check whether data is available in foreign languages. It needs to be seen whether it is possible to access digital objects (documents and the accompanying metadata), whether access is opened for all users or it requires a certain hierarchy access, what is the policy of usage, reusage and distribution etc. It remains to be seen whether there are public API or whether it is possible to collect data through API. In case that there is a public API, one needs to check whether datasets are interoperable or messy, requiring data cleaning. After having visited a certain number of web-sites, the authors expect to collect enough data to make a satisfactory conclusion about accessibility and usage of Serbian archaeological data web bases

    Cities Made of Boundaries

    Cities Made of Boundaries presents the theoretical foundation and concepts for a new social scientific urban morphological mapping method, Boundary Line Type (BLT) Mapping. Its vantage is a plea to establish a frame of reference for radically comparative urban studies positioned between geography and archaeology. Based in multidisciplinary social and spatial theory, a critical realist understanding of the boundaries that compose built space is operationalised by a mapping practice utilising Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Benjamin N. Vis gives a precise account of how BLT Mapping can be applied to detailed historical, reconstructed, contemporary, and archaeological urban plans, exemplified by sixteenth- to twenty-first century Winchester (UK) and Classic Maya Chunchucmil (Mexico). This account demonstrates how the functional and experiential difference between compact western and tropical dispersed cities can be explored. The methodological development of Cities Made of Boundaries will appeal to readers interested in the comparative social analysis of built environments, and those seeking to expand the evidence-base of design options to structure urban life and development

    Prehistoric settlement and networks of interaction in the Western Solomon Islands: A survey of Manning Strait

    This thesis is an investigation into the prehistory of the western Solomon Islands and an examination of archaeological sites located in and around a deep-sea passage between Choiseul and Santa Isabel known as Manning Strait. Archaeological surveying has been carried out in this part of Solomon Islands since the 1960s, however, Choiseul, Manning Strait and large parts of Santa Isabel have received little attention. An important aim of this study was to address this and, ultimately, contribute towards constructing a more complete and comprehensive archaeological sequence for Solomon Islands. Three fundamental aspects of the culture history of the western Solomon Islands are examined. The first is the prehistoric settlement of the region during the late Lapita period (ca. 2700-2000 BP) and evidence of how mobility patterns changed over time. The second is the development of prehistoric trade and exchange networks from initial settlement leading into late prehistory. This period, specifically the last millennium, was a pivotal time in western Solomon Islands which saw major cultural developments such as the emergence of head-hunting, monumental architecture, specialised production and exchanging of shell valuables and increasing contact with Europeans. The third is processes by which cultures in the region changed and diversified over the last two and a half millennia. This traditional culture historical approach is partnered with theoretical outlooks that have developed in more recent years in island archaeology whereby islands are perceived not as singular entities but as part of a broader ‘sea of islands’ or ‘seascapes’. Manning Strait is perceived in this manner not simply as a setting but as an active agent in influencing the course of cultural transformation in the western Solomon Islands. The methodological approach taken in this study draws upon archaeological survey and excavation, laboratory analysis of ceramics, lithics, shell artefacts and faunal remains, and a systematic review of ethnographic and historical literature. Significant outcomes of the fieldwork that are presented include the discovery of a 2.5 m deep cave deposit on Wagina, southeast Choiseul, dating to 2300-2150 calBP, a late Lapita intertidal site in northwest Santa Isabel, and ceramic deposits on the Arnavon Islands and Laena Island dating to between 850-150 calBP. A wide range of artefacts are analysed in this study, although emphasis is placed on exploring production and distribution patterns of pottery to gain insight into the development of both local and regional patterns of inter-island interaction. At the end of the thesis, a ceramic sequence is put forward for Choiseul as well as a revised cultural sequence for the wider western Solomon Islands that builds upon earlier archaeological modelling and findings. Additionally, the dynamic role Manning Strait played in prehistory as an ocean highway in the late Lapita period and altering to becoming a highly contested seascape in late prehistory is discussed
