Channel Estimation and ICI Cancelation in Vehicular Channels of OFDM Wireless Communication Systems
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme increases bandwidth efficiency (BE) of data transmission and eliminates inter symbol interference (ISI). As a result, it has been widely used for wideband communication systems that have been developed during the past two decades and it can be a good candidate for the emerging communication systems such as fifth generation (5G) cellular networks with high carrier frequency and communication systems of high speed vehicles such as high speed trains (HSTs) and supersonic unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs). However, the employment of OFDM for those upcoming systems is challenging because of high Doppler shifts. High Doppler shift makes the wideband communication channel to be both frequency selective and time selective, doubly selective (DS), causes inter carrier interference (ICI) and destroys the orthogonality between the subcarriers of OFDM signal. In order to demodulate the signal in OFDM systems and mitigate ICIs, channel state information (CSI) is required. In this work, we deal with channel estimation (CE) and ICI cancellation in DS vehicular channels. The digitized model of the DS channels can be short and dense, or long and sparse. CE methods that perform well for short and dense channels are highly inefficient for long and sparse channels. As a result, for the latter type of channels, we proposed the employment of compressed sensing (CS) based schemes for estimating the channel. In addition, we extended our CE methods for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) scenarios. We evaluated the CE accuracy and data demodulation fidelity, along with the BE and computational complexity of our methods and compared the results with the previous CE procedures in different environments. The simulation results indicate that our proposed CE methods perform considerably better than the conventional CE schemes
Spectrally and Energy Efficient Wireless Communications: Signal and System Design, Mathematical Modelling and Optimisation
This thesis explores engineering studies and designs aiming to meeting the requirements of enhancing capacity and energy efficiency for next generation communication networks. Challenges of spectrum scarcity and energy constraints are addressed and new technologies are proposed, analytically investigated and examined.
The thesis commences by reviewing studies on spectrally and energy-efficient techniques, with a special focus on non-orthogonal multicarrier modulation, particularly spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM). Rigorous theoretical and mathematical modelling studies of SEFDM are presented. Moreover, to address the potential application of SEFDM under the 5th generation new radio (5G NR) heterogeneous numerologies, simulation-based studies of SEFDM coexisting with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are conducted. New signal formats and corresponding transceiver structure are designed, using a Hilbert transform filter pair for shaping pulses. Detailed modelling and numerical investigations show that the proposed signal doubles spectral efficiency without performance degradation, with studies of two signal formats; uncoded narrow-band internet of things (NB-IoT) signals and unframed turbo coded multi-carrier signals. The thesis also considers using constellation shaping techniques and SEFDM for capacity enhancement in 5G system. Probabilistic shaping for SEFDM is proposed and modelled to show both transmission energy reduction and bandwidth saving with advantageous flexibility for data rate adaptation. Expanding on constellation shaping to improve performance further, a comparative study of multidimensional modulation techniques is carried out. A four-dimensional signal, with better noise immunity is investigated, for which metaheuristic optimisation algorithms are studied, developed, and conducted to optimise bit-to-symbol mapping. Finally, a specially designed machine learning technique for signal and system design in physical layer communications is proposed, utilising the application of autoencoder-based end-to-end learning. Multidimensional signal modulation with multidimensional constellation shaping is proposed and optimised by using machine learning techniques, demonstrating significant improvement in spectral and energy efficiencies

Dynamic Pilot Design for Multicast in the Internet of Vehicles Running at Different Speeds
High mobility of vehicles causes time-frequency selective fading over physical channels within the Internet of vehicles (IoV). To improve the resource utilisation efficiency, a novel transmission strategy, based on dynamic pilot design, is proposed in this paper to reduce the pilot consumption in doubly selective channel estimation for the multicast to vehicles running at different speeds. As the channel coherence time is mainly influenced by the receiver mobility in the multicast from a base station to vehicles, we define a multicast block as the channel coherence time of the slowest vehicle in the multicast group, where common pilot symbols are shared. Then, the multicast data destined for different vehicles are loaded into the block according to their own channel coherence times. To evaluate the performance and resource utilisation of our dynamic pilot design, the metrics of overhead rate, spectral efficiency, and energy efficiency are formulated for the IoV multicast using multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions. In terms of these three metrics, illustrative numerical results on the comparisons between our dynamic pilot design and the conventional counterpart are provided, which not only substantiate that the former outperforms the latter but also present useful tools and specifications for the pilot design in the IoV multicast using MIMO-OFDM transmissions over doubly selective channels

Performance evaluation of fixed WiMax physical layer under high fading channels
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.A radio channel characteristic modelling is essential in every network planning. This project deals with the performance of WiMax networks in an outdoor environment while using fading channel models. The radio channels characteristics are analyzed by simulations have been done using Matlab programming. Stanford University Interim(SUI) Channels set was proposed to simulate the fixed broadband wireless access channel environments where IEEE 802.16d is to be deployed. It has six channel models that are grouped into three categories according to three typical different outdoor Terrains, in order to give a comprehensive study of fading channels on the overall performance of the system, WiMax system has been tested under SUI channels that modified into account for 30o directional antennas, with 90% cell coverage and with 99.9% reliability in its geographical covered area. Furthermore, in order to combat the fading which occurs in urban areas and improve the capacity and the throughput of the system, multiples antennas at both ends of communication link are used, the transmission gain obtained when using multiple antennas instead of only a single antenna. Space-time coding and maximum ratio combining for more than one transmit and receive antenna is implemented to allow performance investigations in various MIMO scenarios. It has been concluded that uses multiple antennas at the receiver offers a significant improvement of 3 dB of gain in the channel SNR. This thesis also contain implementation of all compulsory features of the WiMax OFDM physical layer specified in IEEE 802.16-2004 using Matlab coding. In order to combat the temporal variations in quality on a multipath fading channel, an adaptive modulation technique is used. This technique employs multiple modulation schemes to instantaneously adapt to the variations in the channel SNR, thus maximizing the system throughput and improving BER performance. WiMax transceiver has been tested with and without encoding and studied the effect of encoding on multipath channel. Testing the system with flexible channel bandwidth has been part of this thesis. Finally it has been explained in this thesis the affect of increasing the size of cyclic prefix on overall performance of WiMax system
Peak to average power ratio reduction and error control in MIMO-OFDM HARQ System
Currently, multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMOOFDM) systems underlie crucial wireless communication systems such as commercial 4G and 5G networks, tactical communication, and interoperable Public Safety communications. However, one drawback arising from OFDM modulation is its resulting high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This problem increases with an increase in the number of transmit antennas.
In this work, a new hybrid PAPR reduction technique is proposed for space-time block coding (STBC) MIMO-OFDM systems that combine the coding capabilities to PAPR reduction methods, while leveraging the new degree of freedom provided by the presence of multiple transmit chairs (MIMO).
In the first part, we presented an extensive literature review of PAPR reduction techniques for OFDM and MIMO-OFDM systems. The work developed a PAPR reduction technique taxonomy, and analyzed the motivations for reducing the PAPR in current communication systems, emphasizing two important motivations such as power savings and coverage gain. In the tax onomy presented here, we include a new category, namely, hybrid techniques. Additionally, we drew a conclusion regarding the importance of hybrid PAPR reduction techniques.
In the second part, we studied the effect of forward error correction (FEC) codes on the PAPR for the coded OFDM (COFDM) system. We simulated and compared the CCDF of the PAPR and its relationship with the autocorrelation of the COFDM signal before the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) block. This allows to conclude on the main characteristics of the codes that generate high peaks in the COFDM signal, and therefore, the optimal parameters in order to reduce PAPR. We emphasize our study in FEC codes as linear block codes, and convolutional codes.
Finally, we proposed a new hybrid PAPR reduction technique for an STBC MIMO-OFDM system, in which the convolutional code is optimized to avoid PAPR degradation, which also combines successive suboptimal cross-antenna rotation and inversion (SS-CARI) and iterative modified companding and filtering schemes. The new method permits to obtain a significant net gain for the system, i.e., considerable PAPR reduction, bit error rate (BER) gain as compared to the basic MIMO-OFDM system, low complexity, and reduced spectral splatter. The new hybrid technique was extensively evaluated by simulation, and the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF), the BER, and the power spectral density (PSD) were compared to the original STBC MIMO-OFDM signal

Adaptive averaging channel estimation for DVB-T2 systems
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonIn modern communication systems, the rate of transmitted data is growing rapidly. This leads to the need for more sophisticated methods and techniques of implementation in every block of the transmitter-receiver chain. The weakest link in radio communications is the transmission channel. The signal, which is passed through it, suffers from many degrading factors like noise, attenuation, diffraction, scattering etc. In the receiver side, the modulated signal has to be restored to its initial state in order to extract the useful information. Assuming that the channel acts like a filter with finite impulse, one has to know its coefficients in order to apply the inverse function, which will restore the signal back to its initial state. The techniques which deal with this problem are called channel estimation. Noise is one of the causes that degrade the quality of the received signal. If it could be discarded, then the process of channel estimation would be easier. Transmitting special symbols, called pilots with known amplitude, phase and position to the receiver and assuming that the noise has zero mean, an averaging process could reduce the noise impact to the pilot amplitudes and thus simplify the channel estimation process. In this thesis, a novel channel estimation method based on noise rejection is introduced. The estimator takes into account the time variations of the channel and adapts its buffer size in order to achieve the best performance. Many configurations of the estimator were tested and at the beginning of the research fixed size estimators were tested. The fixed estimator has a very good performance for channels which could be considered as stationary in the time domain, like Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels or slowly time-varying channels. AWGN channel is a channel model where the only distorting factor is the noise, where noise is every unwanted signal interfering with the useful signal. The properties of the noise are that it is additive, which means that the noise is superimposed on the transmitted signal, it is white so the power density is constant for all frequencies, and it has a Gaussian distribution in the time domain with zero mean and variance σ2=N. A slowly time varying channel refers to channel with coherence time larger than the transmitted symbol duration. The performance of a fixed size averaging estimator in case of fast time-varying channels is subject to the buffering time. When the buffering time is smaller or equal to a portion of the coherence time the averaging process offers better performance than the conventional estimation, but when the buffering time exceeds this portion of the coherence time the performance of the averaging process degrades fast. So, an extension has been made to the averaging estimator that estimates the Doppler shift and thus the coherence time, where the channel could be assumed as stationary. The improved estimator called Adaptive Averaging Channel Estimator (AACE) is capable to adjust its buffer size and thus to average only successive Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbols that have the same channel distortions. The OFDM is a transmission method where instead of transmitting the data stream using only on carrier, the stream is divided into parallel sub-streams where the subcarriers conveying the sub-streams are orthogonal to each other. The use of the OFDM increases the symbol duration making it more robust against Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI), which the interference among successive transmitted symbols, and also divides the channel bandwidth into small sub-bandwidths preventing frequency selectivity because of the multipath nature of the radio channel. Simulations using the Rayleigh channel model were performed and the results clearly demonstrate the benefits of the AACE in the channel estimation process. The performance of the combination of AACE with Least Square estimation (AACE-LS) is superior to the conventional Least Square estimation especially for low Doppler shifts and it is close to the Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) estimation performance. Consequently, if the receiver has low computational resources and/or the channel statistics are unknown, then the AACE-LS estimator is a valid choice for modern radio receivers. Moreover, the proposed adaptive averaging process could be used in any OFDM system based on pilot aided channel estimation. In order to verify the superiority of the AACE algorithm, quantitative results are provided in terms of BER vs SNR. It is demonstrated that AACE-LS is 7dB more sensitive than the LS estimator
Design of communication systems based on broadband sources for fiber and free space optical links
[EN] Optical wireless communication (OWC) is a very promising technology for future wireless communications developments. It has attracted increasing interest from researchers and several companies around the world are currently working on the development of very high-speed wireless networks. The scientific and industrial communities believe that OWC will be a complementary technology in its various forms: Free Space Optical communications (FSO), Visible Light Communications (VLC), Light Fidelity (Li-Fi).
In fact, the optical spectrum has been considered for many years as a great opportunity for wireless communications especially due to the saturation of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum.
This dissertation deals with the use of broadband sources in visible light transmission systems (VLC) as well as fiber optic systems. To carry out the research, three parts can be distinguished:
In the first part, we consider the study and simulation of Light Emitting Diode (LED) components with the WIEN2k software by focusing on the optical and electrical properties of elements II-VI.
The second part deals with the design, implementation and testing of different VLC communication prototypes for analog and digital transmission in simplex and half-duplex mode. We have demonstrated that an OWC system using a broadband source (i.e. an LED) can be used not only for data transmission, but also for wireless power transmission. Moreover, the synchronization problem and the detection of level "1" or "0" of a bit often arise in the optical wireless communication systems. This is a result of the attenuation nature of the light over the distance and the problem of Non Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) between the emitter and the receiver. To deal with this problem, a communication protocol ensuring reliable digital data transmission with an adaptive bit level detection algorithm has been provided and its effectiveness has been demonstrated by the transmission of texts and images.
In addition, this thesis provides a solution for the implementation of wavelength division multiplexed - orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (WDM-OFDM) transmitters based on the use of broadband sources in the infrared spectrum for centralized bidirectional fiber networks. Despite the chromatic dispersion that avoids the use of this type of optical sources, the inclusion of certain structures before detection allows the transmission of OFDM signals in optical links. Carrier reuse, dynamic bandwidth allocation and multiband OFDM signals transmission will be experimentally demonstrated by using optical broadband sources in WDM networks.
The main results obtained during this thesis work demonstrate the study procedures, for each part, the effectiveness of the proposed solutions as well as the constraints encountered.Sekkiou, I.
