    Smartphone sensing platform for emergency management

    The increasingly sophisticated sensors supported by modern smartphones open up novel research opportunities, such as mobile phone sensing. One of the most challenging of these research areas is context-aware and activity recognition. The SmartRescue project takes advantage of smartphone sensing, processing and communication capabilities to monitor hazards and track people in a disaster. The goal is to help crisis managers and members of the public in early hazard detection, prediction, and in devising risk-minimizing evacuation plans when disaster strikes. In this paper we suggest a novel smartphone-based communication framework. It uses specific machine learning techniques that intelligently process sensor readings into useful information for the crisis responders. Core to the framework is a content-based publish-subscribe mechanism that allows flexible sharing of sensor data and computation results.     Generating Personalized Pregnancy Nutrition Recommendations with GPT-Powered AI Chatbot. In: 20th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management

    Low socioeconomic status (SES) and inadequate nutrition during pregnancy are linked to health disparities and adverse outcomes, including an increased risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and intrauterine growth restriction. AI-powered computational agents have enormous potential to address this challenge by providing nutrition guidelines or advice to patients with different health literacy and demographics. This paper presents our preliminary exploration of creating a GPT-powered AI chatbot called NutritionBot and investigates the implications for pregnancy nutrition recommendations. We used a user-centered design approach to define the target user persona and collaborated with medical professionals to co-design the chatbot. We integrated our proposed chatbot with ChatGPT to generate pregnancy nutrition recommendations tailored to patients’ lifestyles. Our contributions include introducing a design persona of a pregnant woman from an underserved population, co-designing a nutrition advice chatbot with healthcare experts, and sharing design implications for future GPT-based nutrition chatbots based on our preliminary findings

    Mining Patterns for Web-based Emergency Management Systems

Although, web-based Emergency Management Systems domain is still in its nascent stages, there are design principles, real systems and design patterns from other related areas that can be a valuable source of knowledge to mine design patterns. From these sources we have created a patterns catalogue to assist novice designers on discovering what issues should be addressed to develop useful and successful systems.     Between a Rock and a Cell Phone: Social Media Use during Mass Protests in Iran, Tunisia and Egypt

    In this paper we examine the use of social media, and especially Twitter, in Iran, Tunisia and Egypt during the mass political demonstrations and protests in June 2009, December 2010 - January 2011, and February 2011, respectively. We compare this usage with methods and findings from other studies on the use of Twitter in emergency situations, such as natural and man-made disasters. We draw on our own experiences and participant-observations as an eyewitness in Iran (first author), and on Twitter data from Iran, Tunisia and Egypt. In these three cases, Twitter filled a unique technology and communication gap at least partially. We summarize suggested directions for future research with a view of placing this work in the larger context of social media use in conditions of crisis and social convergence
