    Low thrust chemical rocket technology

    An on-going technology program to improve the performance of low thrust chemical rockets for spacecraft on-board propulsion applications is reviewed. Improved performance and lifetime is sought by the development of new predictive tools to understand the combustion and flow physics, introduction of high temperature materials and improved component designs to optimize performance, and use of higher performance propellants. Improved predictive technology is sought through the comparison of both local and global predictions with experimental data. Predictions are based on both the RPLUS Navier-Stokes code with finite rate kinetics and the JANNAF methodology. Data were obtained with laser-based diagnostics along with global performance measurements. Results indicate that the modeling of the injector and the combustion process needs improvement in these codes and flow visualization with a technique such as 2-D laser induced fluorescence (LIF) would aid in resolving issues of flow symmetry and shear layer combustion processes. High temperature material fabrication processes are under development and small rockets are being designed, fabricated, and tested using these new materials. Rhenium coated with iridium for oxidation protection was produced by the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process and enabled an 800 K increase in rocket operating temperature. Performance gains with this material in rockets using Earth storable propellants (nitrogen tetroxide and monomethylhydrazine or hydrazine) were obtained through component redesign to eliminate fuel film cooling and its associated combustion inefficiency while managing head end thermal soakback. Material interdiffusion and oxidation characteristics indicated that the requisite lifetimes of tens of hours were available for thruster applications. Rockets were designed, fabricated, and tested with thrusts of 22, 62, 440 and 550 N. Performance improvements of 10 to 20 seconds specific impulse were demonstrated. Higher performance propellants were evaluated: Space storable propellants, including liquid oxygen (LOX) as the oxidizer with nitrogen hydrides or hydrocarbon as fuels. Specifically, a LOX/hydrazine engine was designed, fabricated, and shown to have a 95 pct theoretical c-star which translates into a projected vacuum specific impulse of 345 seconds at an area ratio of 204:1. Further performance improvment can be obtained by the use of LOX/hydrogen propellants, especially for manned spacecraft applications, and specific designs must be developed and advanced through flight qualification

    Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA): Convective Boundaries, Element Diffusion, and Massive Star Explosions

    We update the capabilities of the software instrument Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) and enhance its ease of use and availability. Our new approach to locating convective boundaries is consistent with the physics of convection, and yields reliable values of the convective core mass during both hydrogen and helium burning phases. Stars with M<8 M⊙M<8\,{\rm M_\odot} become white dwarfs and cool to the point where the electrons are degenerate and the ions are strongly coupled, a realm now available to study with MESA due to improved treatments of element diffusion, latent heat release, and blending of equations of state. Studies of the final fates of massive stars are extended in MESA by our addition of an approximate Riemann solver that captures shocks and conserves energy to high accuracy during dynamic epochs. We also introduce a 1D capability for modeling the effects of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities that, in combination with the coupling to a public version of the STELLA radiation transfer instrument, creates new avenues for exploring Type II supernovae properties. These capabilities are exhibited with exploratory models of pair-instability supernova, pulsational pair-instability supernova, and the formation of stellar mass black holes. The applicability of MESA is now widened by the capability of importing multi-dimensional hydrodynamic models into MESA. We close by introducing software modules for handling floating point exceptions and stellar model optimization, and four new software tools -- MESAWeb, MESA-Docker, pyMESA, and mesastar.org -- to enhance MESA's education and research impact.Comment: 64 pages, 61 figures; Accepted to AAS Journal

    Assessment of heating and evaporation modelling based on single suspended water droplet experiments

    The work described in this paper is undertaken with the purpose of providing a detailed assessment of the current modelling capabilities of the effects of fire suppression systems (e.g., sprinklers) in fire-driven flows. Such assessment will allow identifying key modelling issues and, ultimately, improving the reliability of the numerical tools in fire safety design studies. More specifically, we studied herein the heating and evaporation of a single water droplet. This rather 'simple' configuration represents the first step in a tedious and rigorous verification and validation process, as advocated in the MaCFP (Measurement and Computation of Fire Phenomena) working group (see https://iafss.org/macfp/). Such a process starts ideally with single-physics 'unit tests' and then more elaborate benchmark cases and sub-systems, before addressing 'real-life' application tests. In this paper, we are considering the recently published comprehensive and well-documented experimental data of Volkov and Strizhak (Applied Thermal Engineering, 2017) where a single suspended water droplet of initial diameter between 2.6 and 3.4 mm is heated up by a convective hot air flow with a velocity between 3 and 4.5 m/s and a temperature between 100 and 800 degrees C. In the present numerical study, 36 experimental tests have been simulated with the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS 6.7.0) as well as with an in-house code. The results show that the droplet lifetime is overpredicted with an overall deviation between 26 and 31%. The deviation in the range 300-800 degrees C is even better, i.e., 5-8%, whilst the cases of 200 and, more so 100 degrees C, showed much stronger deviations. The measured droplet saturation temperatures did not exceed 70 degrees C, even for high air temperatures of around 800 degrees C, whereas the predicted values approached 100 degrees C. A detailed analysis shows that the standard Ranz & Marshall modelling of the non-dimensional Nusselt and Sherwood numbers may not be appropriate in order to obtain a simultaneous good agreement for both the droplet lifetime and temperature. More specifically, the heat-mass transfer analogy (i.e., Nu = Sh) appears to be not always valid

    Combustion research for gas turbine engines

    Research on combustion is being conducted at Lewis Research Center to provide improved analytical models of the complex flow and chemical reaction processes which occur in the combustor of gas turbine engines and other aeropropulsion systems. The objective of the research is to obtain a better understanding of the various physical processes that occur in the gas turbine combustor in order to develop models and numerical codes which can accurately describe these processes. Activities include in-house research projects, university grants, and industry contracts and are classified under the subject areas of advanced numerics, fuel sprays, fluid mixing, and radiation-chemistry. Results are high-lighted from several projects

    Preliminary assessment of soil moisture over vegetation

    Modeling of surface energy fluxes was combined with in-situ measurement of surface parameters, specifically the surface sensible heat flux and the substrate soil moisture. A vegetation component was incorporated in the atmospheric/substrate model and subsequently showed that fluxes over vegetation can be very much different than those over bare soil for a given surface-air temperature difference. The temperature signatures measured by a satellite or airborne radiometer should be interpreted in conjunction with surface measurements of modeled parameters. Paradoxically, analyses of the large-scale distribution of soil moisture availability shows that there is a very high correlation between antecedent precipitation and inferred surface moisture availability, even when no specific vegetation parameterization is used in the boundary layer model. Preparatory work was begun in streamlining the present boundary layer model, developing better algorithms for relating surface temperatures to substrate moisture, preparing for participation in the French HAPEX experiment, and analyzing aircraft microwave and radiometric surface temperature data for the 1983 French Beauce experiments

    Analytical modeling of light transport in scattering materials with strong absorption

    We have investigated the transport of light through slabs that both scatter and strongly absorb, a situation that occurs in diverse application fields ranging from biomedical optics, powder technology, to solid-state lighting. In particular, we study the transport of light in the visible wavelength range between 420420 and 700700 nm through silicone plates filled with YAG:Ce3+^{3+} phosphor particles, that even re-emit absorbed light at different wavelengths. We measure the total transmission, the total reflection, and the ballistic transmission of light through these plates. We obtain average single particle properties namely the scattering cross-section σs\sigma_s, the absorption cross-section σa\sigma_a, and the anisotropy factor μ\mu using an analytical approach, namely the P3 approximation to the radiative transfer equation. We verify the extracted transport parameters using Monte-Carlo simulations of the light transport. Our approach fully describes the light propagation in phosphor diffuser plates that are used in white LEDs and that reveal a strong absorption (L/ℓa>1L/\ell_{\mathrm{a}} > 1) up to L/ℓa=4L/\ell_{\mathrm{a}} = 4, where LL is the slab thickness, ℓa\ell_{\mathrm{a}} is the absorption mean free path. In contrast, the widely used diffusion theory fails to describe this parameter range. Our approach is a suitable analytical tool for industry, since it provides a fast yet accurate determination of key transport parameters, and since it introduces predictive power into the design process of white light emitting diodes
