    DCU-TCD@LogCLEF 2010: re-ranking document collections and query performance estimation

    This paper describes the collaborative participation of Dublin City University and Trinity College Dublin in LogCLEF 2010. Two sets of experiments were conducted. First, different aspects of the TEL query logs were analysed after extracting user sessions of consecutive queries on a topic. The relation between the queries and their length (number of terms) and position (first query or further reformulations) was examined in a session with respect to query performance estimators such as query scope, IDF-based measures, simplified query clarity score, and average inverse document collection frequency. Results of this analysis suggest that only some estimator values show a correlation with query length or position in the TEL logs (e.g. similarity score between collection and query). Second, the relation between three attributes was investigated: the user's country (detected from IP address), the query language, and the interface language. The investigation aimed to explore the influence of the three attributes on the user's collection selection. Moreover, the investigation involved assigning different weights to the three attributes in a scoring function that was used to re-rank the collections displayed to the user according to the language and country. The results of the collection re-ranking show a significant improvement in Mean Average Precision (MAP) over the original collection ranking of TEL. The results also indicate that the query language and interface language have more in uence than the user's country on the collections selected by the users

    Detecting missing content queries in an SMS-Based HIV/AIDS FAQ retrieval system

    Automated Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) answering systems use pre-stored sets of question-answer pairs as an information source to answer natural language questions posed by the users. The main problem with this kind of information source is that there is no guarantee that there will be a relevant question-answer pair for all user queries. In this paper, we propose to deploy a binary classifier in an existing SMS-Based HIV/AIDS FAQ retrieval system to detect user queries that do not have the relevant question-answer pair in the FAQ document collection. Before deploying such a classifier, we first evaluate different feature sets for training in order to determine the sets of features that can build a model that yields the best classification accuracy. We carry out our evaluation using seven different feature sets generated from a query log before and after retrieval by the FAQ retrieval system. Our results suggest that, combining different feature sets markedly improves the classification accuracy

    Reply With: Proactive Recommendation of Email Attachments

    Email responses often contain items-such as a file or a hyperlink to an external document-that are attached to or included inline in the body of the message. Analysis of an enterprise email corpus reveals that 35% of the time when users include these items as part of their response, the attachable item is already present in their inbox or sent folder. A modern email client can proactively retrieve relevant attachable items from the user's past emails based on the context of the current conversation, and recommend them for inclusion, to reduce the time and effort involved in composing the response. In this paper, we propose a weakly supervised learning framework for recommending attachable items to the user. As email search systems are commonly available, we constrain the recommendation task to formulating effective search queries from the context of the conversations. The query is submitted to an existing IR system to retrieve relevant items for attachment. We also present a novel strategy for generating labels from an email corpus---without the need for manual annotations---that can be used to train and evaluate the query formulation model. In addition, we describe a deep convolutional neural network that demonstrates satisfactory performance on this query formulation task when evaluated on the publicly available Avocado dataset and a proprietary dataset of internal emails obtained through an employee participation program.Comment: CIKM2017.     N-Grams Assisted Long Web Search Query Optimization

    Commercial search engines do not return optimal search results when the query is a long or multi-topic one [1]. Long queries are used extensively. While the creator of the long query would most likely use natural language to describe the query, it contains extra information. This information dilutes the results of a web search, and hence decreases the performance as well as quality of the results returned. Kumaran et al. [22] showed that shorter queries extracted from longer user generated queries are more effective for ad-hoc retrieval. Hence reducing these queries by removing extra terms, the quality of the search results can be improved. There are numerous approaches used to address this shortfall. Our approach evaluates various versions of the query, thus trying to find the optimal one. This variation is achieved by reducing the query length using a combination of n-grams assisted query selection as well as a random keyword combination generator. We look at existing approaches and try to improve upon them. We propose a hybrid model that tries to address the shortfalls of an existing technique by incorporating established methods along with new ideas. We use the existing models and plug in information with the help of n-grams as well as randomization to improve the overall performance while keeping any overhead calculations in check

    Intent-aware search result diversification

    Search result diversification has gained momentum as a way to tackle ambiguous queries. An effective approach to this problem is to explicitly model the possible aspects underlying a query, in order to maximise the estimated relevance of the retrieved documents with respect to the different aspects. However, such aspects themselves may represent information needs with rather distinct intents (e.g., informational or navigational). Hence, a diverse ranking could benefit from applying intent-aware retrieval models when estimating the relevance of documents to different aspects. In this paper, we propose to diversify the results retrieved for a given query, by learning the appropriateness of different retrieval models for each of the aspects underlying this query. Thorough experiments within the evaluation framework provided by the diversity task of the TREC 2009 and 2010 Web tracks show that the proposed approach can significantly improve state-of-the-art diversification approaches

    Identifying effective translations for cross-lingual Arabic-to-English user-generated speech search

    Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) systems are a valuable tool to enable speakers of one language to search for content of interest expressed in a different language. A group for whom this is of particular interest is bilingual Arabic speakers who wish to search for English language content using information needs expressed in Arabic queries. A key challenge in CLIR is crossing the language barrier between the query and the documents. The most common approach to bridging this gap is automated query translation, which can be unreliable for vague or short queries. In this work, we examine the potential for improving CLIR effectiveness by predicting the translation effectiveness using Query Performance Prediction (QPP) techniques. We propose a novel QPP method to estimate the quality of translation for an Arabic-Engish Cross-lingual User-generated Speech Search (CLUGS) task. We present an empirical evaluation that demonstrates the quality of our method on alternative translation outputs extracted from an Arabic-to-English Machine Translation system developed for this task. Finally, we show how this framework can be integrated in CLUGS to find relevant translations for improved retrieval performance

    Inferring Networks of Substitutable and Complementary Products

    In a modern recommender system, it is important to understand how products relate to each other. For example, while a user is looking for mobile phones, it might make sense to recommend other phones, but once they buy a phone, we might instead want to recommend batteries, cases, or chargers. These two types of recommendations are referred to as substitutes and complements: substitutes are products that can be purchased instead of each other, while complements are products that can be purchased in addition to each other. Here we develop a method to infer networks of substitutable and complementary products. We formulate this as a supervised link prediction task, where we learn the semantics of substitutes and complements from data associated with products. The primary source of data we use is the text of product reviews, though our method also makes use of features such as ratings, specifications, prices, and brands. Methodologically, we build topic models that are trained to automatically discover topics from text that are successful at predicting and explaining such relationships. Experimentally, we evaluate our system on the Amazon product catalog, a large dataset consisting of 9 million products, 237 million links, and 144 million reviews.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
