    Assessment of the Main Requirements and Characteristics Related to the Implementation of a Residential DC Microgrid

    A generic DC microgrid consists of a number of electric generators with static converters as interface modules, electric loads (to be connected either at DC or AC with inverter modules), as well as connection (by transformer and conversion modules) to the electric distribution network. The chapter envisages the state of the art on DC electric power distribution systems by tapping both high- and low-voltage direct current technologies and leading to the current development prospects. Moreover, a study on the existing standards applicable to DC distribution systems is achieved. The chapter leads to the establishment of the main technical requirements and characteristics suitable to the implementation of a residential DC microgrid. Also, electrical diagrams of the foreseen solutions and users’ recommendations and challenges are suggested by the paper

    Statistical Power Supply Dynamic Noise Prediction in Hierarchical Power Grid and Package Networks

    One of the most crucial high performance systems-on-chip design challenge is to front their power supply noise sufferance due to high frequencies, huge number of functional blocks and technology scaling down. Marking a difference from traditional post physical-design static voltage drop analysis, /a priori dynamic voltage drop/evaluation is the focus of this work. It takes into account transient currents and on-chip and package /RLC/ parasitics while exploring the power grid design solution space: Design countermeasures can be thus early defined and long post physical-design verification cycles can be shortened. As shown by an extensive set of results, a carefully extracted and modular grid library assures realistic evaluation of parasitics impact on noise and facilitates the power network construction; furthermore statistical analysis guarantees a correct current envelope evaluation and Spice simulations endorse reliable result

    Monitoring and Fault Location Sensor Network for Underground Distribution Lines

    One of the fundamental tasks of electric distribution utilities is guaranteeing a continuous supply of electricity to their customers. The primary distribution network is a critical part of these facilities because a fault in it could affect thousands of customers. However, the complexity of this network has been increased with the irruption of distributed generation, typical in a Smart Grid and which has significantly complicated some of the analyses, making it impossible to apply traditional techniques. This problem is intensified in underground lines where access is limited. As a possible solution, this paper proposes to make a deployment of a distributed sensor network along the power lines. This network proposes taking advantage of its distributed character to support new approaches of these analyses. In this sense, this paper describes the aquiculture of the proposed network (adapted to the power grid) based on nodes that use power line communication and energy harvesting techniques. In this sense, it also describes the implementation of a real prototype that has been used in some experiments to validate this technological adaptation. It is considered in the application areas of high-speed electrical machines and their classifications. In addition, design problems of high-speed electrical machines are shown. To estimate the efficiency, loss calculations are performed. The obtained results can be used in the design of high-speed electrical machines with high-coercitivity permanent magnets and in their future development

    Monolithic millimeter-wave diode array beam controllers: Theory and experiment

    In the current work, multi-function beam control arrays have been fabricated and have successfully demonstrated amplitude control of transmitted beams in the W and D bands (75-170 GHz). While these arrays are designed to provide beam control under DC bias operation, new designs for high-speed electronic and optical control are under development. These arrays will fill a need for high-speed watt-level beam switches in pulsed reflectometer systems under development for magnetic fusion plasma diagnostics. A second experimental accomplishment of the current work is the demonstration in the 100-170 GHz (D band) frequency range of a new technique for the measurement of the transmission phase as well as amplitude. Transmission data can serve as a means to extract ('de-embed') the grid parameters; phase information provides more complete data to assist in this process. Additional functions of the array beam controller yet to be tested include electronically controlled steering and focusing of a reflected beam. These have application in the areas of millimeter-wave electronic scanning radar and reflectometry, respectively

    A review on power electronics technologies for electric mobility

    Concerns about greenhouse gas emissions are a key topic addressed by modern societies worldwide. As a contribution to mitigate such effects caused by the transportation sector, the full adoption of electric mobility is increasingly being seen as the main alternative to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which is supported by positive industry indicators, despite some identified hurdles. For such objective, power electronics technologies play an essential role and can be contextualized in different purposes to support the full adoption of electric mobility, including on-board and off-board battery charging systems, inductive wireless charging systems, unified traction and charging systems, new topologies with innovative operation modes for supporting the electrical power grid, and innovative solutions for electrified railways. Embracing all of these aspects, this paper presents a review on power electronics technologies for electric mobility where some of the main technologies and power electronics topologies are presented and explained.     Automated Netlist Generation for 3D Electrothermal and Electromagnetic Field Problems

    We present a method for the automatic generation of netlists describing general three-dimensional electrothermal and electromagnetic field problems. Using a pair of structured orthogonal grids as spatial discretisation, a one-to-one correspondence between grid objects and circuit elements is obtained by employing the finite integration technique. The resulting circuit can then be solved with any standard available circuit simulator, alleviating the need for the implementation of a custom time integrator. Additionally, the approach straightforwardly allows for field-circuit coupling simulations by appropriately stamping the circuit description of lumped devices. As the computational domain in wave propagation problems must be finite, stamps representing absorbing boundary conditions are developed as well. Representative numerical examples are used to validate the approach. The results obtained by circuit simulation on the generated netlists are compared with appropriate reference solutions.Comment: This is a pre-print of an article published in the Journal of Computational Electronics.     Power Quality Improvement and Low Voltage Ride through Capability in Hybrid Wind-PV Farms Grid-Connected Using Dynamic Voltage Restorer

Personal use is also permitted, but republication/redistribution requires IEEE permission.This paper proposes the application of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) to enhance the power quality and improve the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of a three-phase medium-voltage network connected to a hybrid distribution generation system. In this system, the photovoltaic (PV) plant and the wind turbine generator (WTG) are connected to the same point of common coupling (PCC) with a sensitive load. The WTG consists of a DFIG generator connected to the network via a step-up transformer. The PV system is connected to the PCC via a two-stage energy conversion (dc-dc converter and dc-ac inverter). This topology allows, first, the extraction of maximum power based on the incremental inductance technique. Second, it allows the connection of the PV system to the public grid through a step-up transformer. In addition, the DVR based on fuzzy logic controller is connected to the same PCC. Different fault condition scenarios are tested for improving the efficiency and the quality of the power supply and compliance with the requirements of the LVRT grid code. The results of the LVRT capability, voltage stability, active power, reactive power, injected current, and dc link voltage, speed of turbine, and power factor at the PCC are presented with and without the contribution of the DVR system.Peer reviewe
