Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe

    Technologies and solutions for location-based services in smart cities: past, present, and future

    Location-based services (LBS) in smart cities have drastically altered the way cities operate, giving a new dimension to the life of citizens. LBS rely on location of a device, where proximity estimation remains at its core. The applications of LBS range from social networking and marketing to vehicle-toeverything communications. In many of these applications, there is an increasing need and trend to learn the physical distance between nearby devices. This paper elaborates upon the current needs of proximity estimation in LBS and compares them against the available Localization and Proximity (LP) finding technologies (LP technologies in short). These technologies are compared for their accuracies and performance based on various different parameters, including latency, energy consumption, security, complexity, and throughput. Hereafter, a classification of these technologies, based on various different smart city applications, is presented. Finally, we discuss some emerging LP technologies that enable proximity estimation in LBS and present some future research areas

    Advanced real-time indoor tracking based on the Viterbi algorithm and semantic data

    A real-time indoor tracking system based on the Viterbi algorithm is developed. This Viterbi principle is used in combination with semantic data to improve the accuracy, that is, the environment of the object that is being tracked and a motion model. The starting point is a fingerprinting technique for which an advanced network planner is used to automatically construct the radio map, avoiding a time consuming measurement campaign. The developed algorithm was verified with simulations and with experiments in a building-wide testbed for sensor experiments, where a median accuracy below 2 m was obtained. Compared to a reference algorithm without Viterbi or semantic data, the results indicated a significant improvement: the mean accuracy and standard deviation improved by, respectively, 26.1% and 65.3%. Thereafter a sensitivity analysis was conducted to estimate the influence of node density, grid size, memory usage, and semantic data on the performance

    A Hybrid Indoor Location Positioning System

    Indoor location positioning techniques have experienced impressive growth in recent years. A wide range of indoor positioning algorithms has been developed for various applications. In this work a practical indoor location positioning technique is presented which utilizes off-the-shelf smartphones and low-cost Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) nodes without any further infrastructure. The method includes coarse and fine modes of location positioning. In the coarse mode, the received signal strength (RSS) of the BLE nodes is used for location estimation while in the fine acoustic signals are utilized for accurate positioning. The system can achieve centimeter-level positioning accuracy in its fine mode. To enhance the system’s performance in noisy environments, two digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms of (a) band-pass filtering with audio pattern recognition and (b) linear frequency modulated chirp signal with matched filter are implemented. To increase the system’s robustness in dense multipath environments, a method using data clustering with sliding window is employed. The received signal strength of BLE nodes is used as an auxiliary positioning method to identify the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagation paths in the acoustic positioning mode. Experimental measurement results in an indoor area of 10 m2 indicate that the positioning error falls below 6 cm

    High-Precision Localization Using Ground Texture

    Location-aware applications play an increasingly critical role in everyday life. However, satellite-based localization (e.g., GPS) has limited accuracy and can be unusable in dense urban areas and indoors. We introduce an image-based global localization system that is accurate to a few millimeters and performs reliable localization both indoors and outside. The key idea is to capture and index distinctive local keypoints in ground textures. This is based on the observation that ground textures including wood, carpet, tile, concrete, and asphalt may look random and homogeneous, but all contain cracks, scratches, or unique arrangements of fibers. These imperfections are persistent, and can serve as local features. Our system incorporates a downward-facing camera to capture the fine texture of the ground, together with an image processing pipeline that locates the captured texture patch in a compact database constructed offline. We demonstrate the capability of our system to robustly, accurately, and quickly locate test images on various types of outdoor and indoor ground surfaces

    A 3D indoor positioning system based on common visible LEDs

    We propose a realistic 3D positioning system for indoor navigation that exploits visible Light EmittingDiodes (LEDs), placed on the ceiling. A unique frequency tone is assigned to each lamp and modulatesits intensity in periodic time slots. The Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) is measured without theneed of a synchronization system between the sources and the receiver, then it is used to accuratelyestimate the receiver position. We first describe the theoretical approach, then propose the modeland characterize the possible sources of noise. Finally, we demonstrate the proof-of-concept of theproposed system by simulation of lightwave propagation. Namely, we assess its performance by usingMontecarlo simulations in a common room and estimate the impact of the different implementationparameters on the accuracy of the proposed solution. We find that, in realistic conditions, thetechnique allows for centimeter precision. Pushing the device requirements, the precision can befurther increased to a sub-centimeter accuracy
