    Improving the Quality of Technology-Enhanced Learning for Computer Programming Courses

    Teaching computing courses is a major challenge for the majority of lecturers in Libyan higher learning institutions. These courses contain numerous abstract concepts that cannot be easily explained using traditional educational methods. This paper describes the rationale, design, development and implementation stages of an e-learning package (including multimedia resources such as simulations, animations, and videos) using the ASSURE model. This training package can be used by students before they attend practical computer lab sessions, preparing them by developing technical skills and applying concepts and theories presented in lecture through supplementary study and exercises

    The potential contributions of concept maps for learning website to assessment for learning practices

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the promising contributions of the Concept Maps for Learning (CMfL) website to assessment for learning practices. The CMfL website generates concept maps from relatedness degree of concepts pairs through the Pathfinder Scaling Algorithm. This website also confirms the established principles of effective assessment for learning, for it is capable of automatically assessing students’ higher order knowledge, simultaneously identifying strengths and weaknesses, immediately providing useful feedback and being user-friendly. According to the default assessment plan, students first create concept maps on a particular subject and then they are given individualized visual feedback followed by associated instructional material (e.g., videos, website links, examples, problems, etc.) based on a comparison of their concept map and a subject matter expert’s map. After studying the feedback and instructional material, teachers can monitor their students’ progress by having them create revised concept maps. Therefore, we claim that the CMfL website may reduce the workload of teachers as well as provide immediate and delayed feedback on the weaknesses of students in different forms such as graphical and multimedia. For the following study, we will examine whether these promising contributions to assessment for learning are valid in a variety of subjects

    Message design is all around us, from the presentations we see in meetings and classes, to the instructions that come with our latest tech gadgets, to multi-million-dollar training simulations. In short, instructional message design is the real-world application of instructional and learning theories to design the tools and technologies used to communicate and effectively convey information. This field of study pulls from many applied sciences including cognitive psychology, industrial design, graphic design, instructional design, and human performance technology to name just a few. In this book we visit several foundational theories that guide our research, look at different real-world applications, and begin to discuss directions for future best practice. For instance, cognitive load and multimedia learning theories provide best practice, PowerPoint and simulations are only a few of the multitude of applications, and special needs learners and designing for cultural inclusiveness are only two of many areas where effective messages design can improve outcomes. Studying effective instructional message design tools and techniques has and will continue to be a critical aspect of the overall instructional design process. Hopefully, this book will serve as an introduction to these topics and inspire your curiosity to explore further

    The Use of Video in the Occupational Therapy Graduate Classroom

    As the cost of graduate education continues to rise and occupational therapy moves toward a value-based reimbursement system, the development of clinical reasoning skills in a short timeframe becomes increasingly more important in occupational therapy education. Incorporating the use of video into occupational therapy curricula is an effective method of introducing and reinforcing material, developing critical thinking skills, and refining skills of interpersonal communication, observation, and documentation. Determining which technology to use, and how to integrate it effectively into a course, can be overwhelming for instructors, especially those new to using video applications. This article introduces various types of video technology and provides practical examples for integration into the graduate occupational therapy classroom. Potential benefits and limitations are discussed for each type of technology

    Student Perceptions of Flipped Learning in a High School Math Classroom

    Flipped classrooms are implemented in more schools each year, particularly in courses requiring increased teacher guidance for mastery. While a foundation of research related to pedagogy and academic outcomes exists, research is limited surrounding student perceptions of the social and learning culture during flipped learning. The purpose of this study was to explore high school math students\u27 lived experiences of flipped learning related to content and instruction, critical thinking, and collaboration and interactions. A phenomenological design was employed using a conceptual framework combining cognitive load theory, sociocultural learning theory, and schema theory. Students from two public high schools in the Midwest participated. Seven students participated in interviews, and nine students participated in two focus group discussions. Data analysis involved in vivo coding of transcribed interviews and focus groups. Key results included students\u27 perceptions of increased engagement and interactions, as well as more in-depth learning in flipped environments. Increased critical thinking was related to both instructional strategies employed and students\u27 ability to self-regulate learning. Concepts of peer collaboration shifted as students viewed learning environments and sources of expertise as more extensive in the flipped environment. This study contributes to positive social change by providing educators and researchers with a deeper understanding of the importance of ensuring students are competent in using social technology tools that encourage students to interact both socially and academically in order to help them become more self-directed learners
