    This article analyses the debate on the desirability of separating children by sex in schools. The study reviews the neuroscientific arguments that can inform decisions on this issue. The author starts from the understanding that the education debate should centre its decision not on neuroscientific findings, which are still inconclusive, but on a proposal that evaluates the aim of education. As a new field of study, neuroeducation has the opportunity to draw into the dialogue all the disciplines participating to that end.En el presente artículo se analizará el debate sobre la conveniencia de separar por sexos a niños y niñas en las aulas. Se partirá de una revisión de los argumentos neurocientíficos que puedan aconsejar una decisión al respecto. Para ello se entenderá que el debate educativo ha de centrar su decisión, no en los hallazgos neurocientíficos, los cuáles hasta el momento no son concluyentes, sino en una apuesta que evalúe el mismo objetivo de la educación. La Neuroeducación, como nuevo campo de estudio, tiene la oportunidad de poner en diálogo todas las disciplinas convenidas a tal fin

    Sex differences in brain homotopic co-activations: a meta-analytic study

    An element of great interest in functional connectivity is ‘homotopic connectivity’ (HC), namely the connectivity between two mirrored areas of the two hemispheres, mainly mediated by the fibers of the corpus callosum. Despite a long tradition of studying sexual dimorphism in the human brain, to our knowledge only one study has addressed the influence of sex on HC. We investigated the issue of homotopic co-activations in women and men using a coordinate-based meta-analytic method and data from the BrainMap database. A first unexpected observation was that the database was affected by a sex bias: women-only groups are investigated less often than men-only ones, and they are more often studied in certain domains such as emotion compared to men, and less in cognition. Implementing a series of sampling procedures to equalize the size and proportion of the datasets, our results indicated that females exhibit stronger interhemispheric co-activation than males, suggesting that the female brain is less lateralized and more integrated than that of males. In addition, males appear to show less intense but more extensive co-activation than females. Some local differences also appeared. In particular, it appears that primary motor and perceptual areas are more co-activated in males, in contrast to the opposite trend in the rest of the brain. This argues for a multidimensional view of sex brain differences and suggests that the issue should be approached with more complex models than previously thought.     Individual differences in the dominance of interhemispheric connections predict cognitive ability beyond sex and brain size

    Global structural brain connectivity has been reported to be sex-dependent with women having increased interhemispheric connectivity (InterHc) and men having greater intrahemispheric connectivity (IntraHc). However, (a) smaller brains show greater InterHc, (b) larger brains show greater IntraHc, and (c) women have, on average, smaller brains than men. Therefore, sex differences in brain size may modulate sex differences in global brain connectivity. At the behavioural level, sex-dependent differences in connectivity are thought to contribute to men-women differences in spatial and verbal abilities. But this has never been tested at the individual level. The current study assessed whether individual differences in global structural connectome measures (InterHc, IntraHc and the ratio of InterHc relative to IntraHc) predict spatial and verbal ability while accounting for the effect of sex and brain size. The sample included forty men and forty women, who did neither differ in age nor in verbal and spatial latent components defined by a broad battery of tests and tasks. High-resolution T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted images were obtained for computing brain size and reconstructing the structural connectome. Results showed that men had higher IntraHc than women, while women had an increased ratio InterHc/IntraHc. However, these sex differences were modulated by brain size. Increased InterHc relative to IntraHc predicted higher spatial and verbal ability irrespective of sex and brain size. The positive correlations between the ratio InterHc/IntraHc and the spatial and verbal abilities were confirmed in 1000 random samples generated by bootstrapping. Therefore, sex differences in global structural connectome connectivity were modulated by brain size and did not underlie sex differences in verbal and spatial abilities.
