    Quality assessment and usage behavior of a mobile voice-over-IP service

    Voice-over-IP (VoIP) services offer users a cheap alternative to the traditional mobile operators to make voice calls. Due to the increased capabilities and connectivity of mobile devices, these VoIP services are becoming increasingly popular on the mobile platform. Understanding the user's usage behavior and quality assessment of the VoIP service plays a key role in optimizing the Quality of Experience (QoE) and making the service to succeed or to fail. By analyzing the usage and quality assessments of a commercial VoIP service, this paper identifies device characteristics, context parameters, and user aspects that influence the usage behavior and experience during VoIP calls. Whereas multimedia services are traditionally evaluated by monitoring usage and quality for a limited number of test subjects and during a limited evaluation period, this study analyzes the service usage and quality assessments of more than thousand users over a period of 120 days. This allows to analyze evolutions in the usage behavior and perceived quality over time, which has not been done up to now for a widely-used, mobile, multimedia service. The results show a significant evolution over time of the number of calls, the call duration, and the quality assessment. The time of the call, the used network, and handovers during the call showed to have a significant influence on the users' quality assessments

    Green Cellular Networks: A Survey, Some Research Issues and Challenges

    Energy efficiency in cellular networks is a growing concern for cellular operators to not only maintain profitability, but also to reduce the overall environment effects. This emerging trend of achieving energy efficiency in cellular networks is motivating the standardization authorities and network operators to continuously explore future technologies in order to bring improvements in the entire network infrastructure. In this article, we present a brief survey of methods to improve the power efficiency of cellular networks, explore some research issues and challenges and suggest some techniques to enable an energy efficient or "green" cellular network. Since base stations consume a maximum portion of the total energy used in a cellular system, we will first provide a comprehensive survey on techniques to obtain energy savings in base stations. Next, we discuss how heterogeneous network deployment based on micro, pico and femto-cells can be used to achieve this goal. Since cognitive radio and cooperative relaying are undisputed future technologies in this regard, we propose a research vision to make these technologies more energy efficient.     Analysis of the quality of experience of a commercial voice-over-IP service

    Voice-over-IP (VoIP) services, enabling users to make cheap phone calls using the Internet, are becoming increasingly popular, not only on desktop computers but also on mobile devices such as smartphones that are connected through mobile networks. Users' perception of the level of quality plays a key role in making a VoIP service to succeed or to fail. This paper demonstrates the influence of technical parameters (such as the audio codec, type of data network, and handovers during the call), device characteristics (such as the platform, manufacturer, model, and operating system), and application aspects (such as the software version and configuration) on the subjective quality of a commercial VoIP service. The relative influence of all these parameters is determined and a decision tree combines these results in order to assess the subjective quality. Combining a large number of objective parameters in a decision tree to determine the user's subjective evaluation of the quality of a VoIP call is a novel and complex procedure. The subjective quality, in turn, has an influence on the duration of the call, and as a result an influence on the usage behavior of the service. The users' assessment of the service quality is not evaluated by merely taking a snapshot of the perceived quality at one moment in time but rather by analyzing the perceived quality over a longer period of time during service usage, which has not been done up to now. Analyzing the VoIP service using a regression analysis over a period of 120 days showed that the perceived quality decreases slightly when the user utilizes the service more often and gets more familiar with it

    A novel non-intrusive objective method to predict voice quality of service in LTE networks.

    This research aimed to introduce a novel approach for non-intrusive objective measurement of voice Quality of Service (QoS) in LTE networks. While achieving this aim, the thesis established a thorough knowledge of how voice traffic is handled in LTE networks, the LTE network architecture and its similarities and differences to its predecessors and traditional ground IP networks and most importantly those QoS affecting parameters which are exclusive to LTE environments. Mean Opinion Score (MOS) is the scoring system used to measure the QoS of voice traffic which can be measured subjectively (as originally intended). Subjective QoS measurement methods are costly and time-consuming, therefore, objective methods such as Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) were developed to address these limitations. These objective methods have a high correlation with subjective MOS scores. However, they either require individual calculation of many network parameters or have an intrusive nature that requires access to both the reference signal and the degraded signal for comparison by software. Therefore, the current objective methods are not suitable for application in real-time measurement and prediction scenarios. A major contribution of the research was identifying LTE-specific QoS affecting parameters. There is no previous work that combines these parameters to assess their impacts on QoS. The experiment was configured in a hardware in the loop environment. This configuration could serve as a platform for future research which requires simulation of voice traffic in LTE environments. The key contribution of this research is a novel non-intrusive objective method for QoS measurement and prediction using neural networks. A comparative analysis is presented that examines the performance of four neural network algorithms for non-intrusive measurement and prediction of voice quality over LTE networks. In conclusion, the Bayesian Regularization algorithm with 4 neurons in the hidden layer and sigmoid symmetric transfer function was identified as the best solution with a Mean Square Error (MSE) rate of 0.001 and regression value of 0.998 measured for the testing data set

    Access network selection schemes for multiple calls in next generation wireless networks

    There is an increasing demand for internet services by mobile subscribers over the wireless access networks, with limited radio resources and capacity constraints. A viable solution to this capacity crunch is the deployment of heterogeneous networks. However, in this wireless environment, the choice of the most appropriate Radio Access Technology (RAT) that can Tsustain or meet the quality of service (QoS) requirements of users' applications require careful planning and cost efficient radio resource management methods. Previous research works on access network selection have focused on selecting a suitable RAT for a user's single call request. With the present request for multiple calls over wireless access networks, where each call has different QoS requirements and the available networks exhibit dynamic channel conditions, the choice of a suitable RAT capable of providing the "Always Best Connected" (ABC) experience for the user becomes a challenge. In this thesis, the problem of selecting the suitable RAT that is capable of meeting the QoS requirements for multiple call requests by mobile users in access networks is investigated. In addressing this problem, we proposed the use of Complex PRoprtional ASsesment (COPRAS) and Consensus-based Multi-Attribute Group Decision Making (MAGDM) techniques as novel and viable RAT selection methods for a grouped-multiple call. The performance of the proposed COPRAS multi-attribute decision making approach to RAT selection for a grouped-call has been evaluated through simulations in different network scenarios. The results show that the COPRAS method, which is simple and flexible, is more efficient in the selection of appropriate RAT for group multiple calls. The COPRAS method reduces handoff frequency and is computationally inexpensive when compared with other methods such as the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) and Multiplicative Exponent Weighting (MEW). The application of the proposed consensus-based algorithm in the selection of a suitable RAT for group-multiple calls, comprising of voice, video-streaming, and file-downloading has been intensively investigated. This algorithm aggregates the QoS requirement of the individual application into a collective QoS for the group calls. This new and novel approach to RAT selection for a grouped-call measures and compares the consensus degree of the collective solution and individual solution against a predefined threshold value. Using the methods of coincidence among preferences and coincidence among solutions with a predefined consensus threshold of 0.9, we evaluated the performance of the consensus-based RAT selection scheme through simulations under different network scenarios. The obtained results show that both methods of coincidences have the capability to select the most suitable RAT for a group of multiple calls. However, the method of coincidence among solutions achieves better results in terms of accuracy, it is less complex and the number of iteration before achieving the predefined consensus threshold is reduced. A utility-based RAT selection method for parallel traffic-streaming in an overlapped heterogeneous wireless network has also been developed. The RAT selection method was modeled with constraints on terminal battery power, service cost and network congestion to select a specified number of RATs that optimizes the terminal interface utility. The results obtained show an optimum RAT selection strategy that maximizes the terminal utility and selects the best RAT combinations for user's parallel-streaming for voice, video and file-download

    Prediction model of triple play services for QoS assessment in IP based networks

    This paper brings a QoS (Quality of Service) assessment model which can estimate voice and video quality. Based on the proposed model, speech or video quality is computed with regard to congestion management QoS configuration in the network and its level of total utilization.     Objective Measurement of Speech Quality in VoIP over Wireless LAN during Handoff

    Quality of Service is a very important factor to determine the quality of a VoIP call. Different subjective and objective models exist for evaluating the speech quality in VoIP. E-model is one of the objective methods of measuring the speech quality; it considers various factors like packet loss, delay and codec impairments. The calculations of Emodel are not very accurate in case of handovers – when a VoIP call moves from one wireless LAN to another. This project conducted experimental evaluation of performance of E-model during handovers and proposes a new approach to accurately calculate the speech quality of VoIP during handovers. A detailed description of the experimental setup and the comparison of the new approach with E-model is presented in this report
