Pseudo-random graphs
Random graphs have proven to be one of the most important and fruitful
concepts in modern Combinatorics and Theoretical Computer Science. Besides
being a fascinating study subject for their own sake, they serve as essential
instruments in proving an enormous number of combinatorial statements, making
their role quite hard to overestimate. Their tremendous success serves as a
natural motivation for the following very general and deep informal questions:
what are the essential properties of random graphs? How can one tell when a
given graph behaves like a random graph? How to create deterministically graphs
that look random-like? This leads us to a concept of pseudo-random graphs and
the aim of this survey is to provide a systematic treatment of this concept.Comment: 50 page
Distinguishing graphs by their left and right homomorphism profiles
We introduce a new property of graphs called ‘q-state Potts unique-ness’ and relate it to chromatic and Tutte
uniqueness, and also to ‘chromatic–flow uniqueness’, recently studied by Duan, Wu and Yu.
We establish for which edge-weighted graphs H homomor-phism functions from multigraphs G to H are
specializations of the Tutte polynomial of G, in particular answering a question of Freed-man, Lovász and
Schrijver. We also determine for which edge-weighted graphs H homomorphism functions from
multigraphs G to H are specializations of the ‘edge elimination polynomial’ of Averbouch, Godlin and
Makowsky and the ‘induced subgraph poly-nomial’ of Tittmann, Averbouch and Makowsky.
Unifying the study of these and related problems is the notion of the left and right homomorphism profiles
of a graph.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia MTM2008-05866-C03-01Junta de AndalucÃa FQM- 0164Junta de AndalucÃa P06-FQM-0164
Knot Invariants and New Weight Systems from General 3D TFTs
We introduce and study the Wilson loops in a general 3D topological field
theories (TFTs), and show that the expectation value of Wilson loops also gives
knot invariants as in Chern-Simons theory. We study the TFTs within the
Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) and Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ)
framework, and the Ward identities of these theories imply that the expectation
value of the Wilson loop is a pairing of two dual constructions of (co)cycles
of certain extended graph complex (extended from Kontsevich's graph complex to
accommodate the Wilson loop). We also prove that there is an isomorphism
between the same complex and certain extended Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of
Hamiltonian vector fields. This isomorphism allows us to generalize the Lie
algebra weight system for knots to weight systems associated with any
homological vector field and its representations. As an example we construct
knot invariants using holomorphic vector bundle over hyperKahler manifolds.Comment: 55 pages, typos correcte
Vertex decomposable graphs and obstructions to shellability
Inspired by several recent papers on the edge ideal of a graph G, we study
the equivalent notion of the independence complex of G. Using the tool of
vertex decomposability from geometric combinatorics, we show that 5-chordal
graphs with no chordless 4-cycles are shellable and sequentially
Cohen-Macaulay. We use this result to characterize the obstructions to
shellability in flag complexes, extending work of Billera, Myers, and Wachs. We
also show how vertex decomposability may be used to show that certain graph
constructions preserve shellability.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. v2: Improved exposition, added Section 5.2 and

On All-loop Integrands of Scattering Amplitudes in Planar N=4 SYM
We study the relationship between the momentum twistor MHV vertex expansion
of planar amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills and the all-loop generalization of
the BCFW recursion relations. We demonstrate explicitly in several examples
that the MHV vertex expressions for tree-level amplitudes and loop integrands
satisfy the recursion relations. Furthermore, we introduce a rewriting of the
MHV expansion in terms of sums over non-crossing partitions and show that this
cyclically invariant formula satisfies the recursion relations for all numbers
of legs and all loop orders.Comment: 34 pages, 17 figures; v2: Minor improvements to exposition and
