Incremental Trust in Grid Computing
This paper describes a comparative simulation study of some incremental trust and reputation algorithms for handling behavioural trust in large distributed systems, such as those based on the Grid paradigm. Two types of reputation algorithm (based on discrete and Bayesian evaluation of ratings) and two ways of combining direct trust and reputation (discrete combination and combination based on fuzzy logic) are considered. The various combinations of these methods are evaluated from the point of view of their ability to respond to changes in behaviour and the ease with which suitable parameters for the algorithms can be found in the context of Grid computing systems.
Next challenges for adaptive learning systems
Learning from evolving streaming data has become a 'hot' research topic in the last decade and many adaptive learning algorithms have been developed. This research was stimulated by rapidly growing amounts of industrial, transactional, sensor and other business data that arrives in real time and needs to be mined in real time. Under such circumstances, constant manual adjustment of models is in-efficient and with increasing amounts of data is becoming infeasible. Nevertheless, adaptive learning models are still rarely employed in business applications in practice. In the light of rapidly growing structurally rich 'big data', new generation of parallel computing solutions and cloud computing services as well as recent advances in portable computing devices, this article aims to identify the current key research directions to be taken to bring the adaptive learning closer to application needs. We identify six forthcoming challenges in designing and building adaptive learning (pre-diction) systems: making adaptive systems scalable, dealing with realistic data, improving usability and trust, integrat-ing expert knowledge, taking into account various application needs, and moving from adaptive algorithms towards adaptive tools. Those challenges are critical for the evolving stream settings, as the process of model building needs to be fully automated and continuous.</jats:p

Incremental eigenpair computation for graph Laplacian matrices: theory and applications
The smallest eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors (i.e., eigenpairs) of a graph Laplacian matrix have been widely used for spectral clustering and community detection. However, in real-life applications, the number of clusters or communities (say, K) is generally unknown a priori. Consequently, the majority of the existing methods either choose K heuristically or they repeat the clustering method with different choices of K and accept the best clustering result. The first option, more often, yields suboptimal result, while the second option is computationally expensive. In this work, we propose an incremental method for constructing the eigenspectrum of the graph Laplacian matrix. Optimizing for confidence - Costs and opportunities at the frontier between abstraction and reality
Is there a relationship between computing costs and the confidence people
place in the behavior of computing systems? What are the tuning knobs one can
use to optimize systems for human confidence instead of correctness in purely
abstract models? This report explores these questions by reviewing the
mechanisms by which people build confidence in the match between the physical
world behavior of machines and their abstract intuition of this behavior
according to models or programming language semantics. We highlight in
particular that a bottom-up approach relies on arbitrary trust in the accuracy
of I/O devices, and that there exists clear cost trade-offs in the use of I/O
devices in computing systems. We also show various methods which alleviate the
need to trust I/O devices arbitrarily and instead build confidence
incrementally "from the outside" by considering systems as black box entities.
We highlight cases where these approaches can reach a given confidence level at
a lower cost than bottom-up approaches.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
It's written in the cloud: The hype and promise of cloud computing
Purpose of paper: This viewpoint discusses the emerging IT platform of Cloud Computing and discusses where and how this has developed in terms of the collision between internet and enterprise computing paradigms – and hence why cloud computing will be driven not by computing architectures but more fundamental ICT consumption behaviours. Design/methodology/approach: The approach has been based upon the discussion and recent developments of Software as a Service (SaaS) and associated ICT computing metaphors and is largely based upon the contemporary discussion at the moment of the impact of social, open source and configurable technology services. Findings: It is suggested that whilst cloud computing and SaaS are indeed innovations within ICT, the real innovation will come when such platforms allow new industries, sectors, ways of doing business, connecting with and engaging with people to emerge. Thus looking beyond the technology itself.
