Serially Concatenated Luby Transform Coding and Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation Using Iterative Decoding for the Wireless Internet
In Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) the coding and modulation schemes were jointly optimized for the sake of attaining the best possible performance when communicating over fading wireless communication channels. The iterative decoding scheme of BICM (BICM-ID) invoking an appropriate bit-to-symbol mapping strategy enhances its achievable performance in both AWGN and Rayleigh channels. BICM-ID may be conveniently combined with Luby Transform (LT) codes, which were designed for handling packetized wireless Internet data traffic in erasure channels without retransmitting the corrupted packets. By jointly designing a serially concatenated LT-BICM-ID code, an infinitesimally low Bit Error Rate (BER) is achieved for Signal to Noise Ratios (SNR) in excess of 7.5dB over wireless Internet type erasure channels contaminated by AWGN
Block-Diagonal and LT Codes for Distributed Computing With Straggling Servers
We propose two coded schemes for the distributed computing problem of
multiplying a matrix by a set of vectors. The first scheme is based on
partitioning the matrix into submatrices and applying maximum distance
separable (MDS) codes to each submatrix. For this scheme, we prove that up to a
given number of partitions the communication load and the computational delay
(not including the encoding and decoding delay) are identical to those of the
scheme recently proposed by Li et al., based on a single, long MDS code.
However, due to the use of shorter MDS codes, our scheme yields a significantly
lower overall computational delay when the delay incurred by encoding and
decoding is also considered. We further propose a second coded scheme based on
Luby Transform (LT) codes under inactivation decoding. Interestingly, LT codes
may reduce the delay over the partitioned scheme at the expense of an increased
communication load. We also consider distributed computing under a deadline and
show numerically that the proposed schemes outperform other schemes in the
literature, with the LT code-based scheme yielding the best performance for the
scenarios considered.Comment: To appear in IEEE Transactions on Communication
Two-tier channel estimation aided near-capacity MIMO transceivers relying on norm-based joint transmit and receive antenna selection
We propose a norm-based joint transmit and receive antenna selection (NBJTRAS) aided near-capacity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system relying on the assistance of a novel two-tier channel estimation scheme. Specifically, a rough estimate of the full MIMO channel is first generated using a low-complexity, low-training-overhead minimum mean square error based channel estimator, which relies on reusing a modest number of radio frequency (RF) chains. NBJTRAS is then carried out based on this initial full MIMO channel estimate. The NBJTRAS aided MIMO system is capable of significantly outperforming conventional MIMO systems equipped with the same modest number of RF chains, while dispensing with the idealised simplifying assumption of having perfectly known channel state information (CSI). Moreover, the initial subset channel estimate associated with the selected subset MIMO channel matrix is then used for activating a powerful semi-blind joint channel estimation and turbo detector-decoder, in which the channel estimate is refined by a novel block-of-bits selection based soft-decision aided channel estimator (BBSB-SDACE) embedded in the iterative detection and decoding process. The joint channel estimation and turbo detection-decoding scheme operating with the aid of the proposed BBSB-SDACE channel estimator is capable of approaching the performance of the near-capacity maximumlikelihood (ML) turbo transceiver associated with perfect CSI. This is achieved without increasing the complexity of the ML turbo detection and decoding process
