    Cloud computing resource scheduling and a survey of its evolutionary approaches

    A disruptive technology fundamentally transforming the way that computing services are delivered, cloud computing offers information and communication technology users a new dimension of convenience of resources, as services via the Internet. Because cloud provides a finite pool of virtualized on-demand resources, optimally scheduling them has become an essential and rewarding topic, where a trend of using Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms is emerging rapidly. Through analyzing the cloud computing architecture, this survey first presents taxonomy at two levels of scheduling cloud resources. It then paints a landscape of the scheduling problem and solutions. According to the taxonomy, a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches is presented systematically. Looking forward, challenges and potential future research directions are investigated and invited, including real-time scheduling, adaptive dynamic scheduling, large-scale scheduling, multiobjective scheduling, and distributed and parallel scheduling. At the dawn of Industry 4.0, cloud computing scheduling for cyber-physical integration with the presence of big data is also discussed. Research in this area is only in its infancy, but with the rapid fusion of information and data technology, more exciting and agenda-setting topics are likely to emerge on the horizon

    A Parallel Divide-and-Conquer based Evolutionary Algorithm for Large-scale Optimization

    Large-scale optimization problems that involve thousands of decision variables have extensively arisen from various industrial areas. As a powerful optimization tool for many real-world applications, evolutionary algorithms (EAs) fail to solve the emerging large-scale problems both effectively and efficiently. In this paper, we propose a novel Divide-and-Conquer (DC) based EA that can not only produce high-quality solution by solving sub-problems separately, but also highly utilizes the power of parallel computing by solving the sub-problems simultaneously. Existing DC-based EAs that were deemed to enjoy the same advantages of the proposed algorithm, are shown to be practically incompatible with the parallel computing scheme, unless some trade-offs are made by compromising the solution quality.Comment: 12 pages, 0 figure

    Development of an Algorithm for Multicriteria Optimization of Deep Learning Neural Networks

    Nowadays, machine learning methods are actively used to process big data. A promising direction is neural networks, in which structure optimization occurs on the principles of self-configuration. Genetic algorithms are applied to solve this nontrivial problem. Most multicriteria evolutionary algorithms use a procedure known as non-dominant sorting to rank decisions. However, the efficiency of procedures for adding points and updating rank values in non-dominated sorting (incremental non-dominated sorting) remains low. In this regard, this research improves the performance of these algorithms, including the condition of an asynchronous calculation of the fitness of individuals. The relevance of the research is determined by the fact that although many scholars and specialists have studied the self-tuning of neural networks, they have not yet proposed a comprehensive solution to this problem. In particular, algorithms for efficient non-dominated sorting under conditions of incremental and asynchronous updates when using evolutionary methods of multicriteria optimization have not been fully developed to date. To achieve this goal, a hybrid co-evolutionary algorithm was developed that significantly outperforms all algorithms included in it, including error-back propagation and genetic algorithms that operate separately. The novelty of the obtained results lies in the fact that the developed algorithms have minimal asymptotic complexity.     A Coevolutionary Particle Swarm Algorithm for Bi-Level Variational Inequalities: Applications to Competition in Highway Transportation Networks

    A climate of increasing deregulation in traditional highway transportation, where the private sector has an expanded role in the provision of traditional transportation services, provides a background for practical policy issues to be investigated. One of the key issues of interest, and the focus of this chapter, would be the equilibrium decision variables offered by participants in this market. By assuming that the private sector participants play a Nash game, the above problem can be described as a Bi-Level Variational Inequality (BLVI). Our problem differs from the classical Cournot-Nash game because each and every player’s actions is constrained by another variational inequality describing the equilibrium route choice of users on the network. In this chapter, we discuss this BLVI and suggest a heuristic coevolutionary particle swarm algorithm for its resolution. Our proposed algorithm is subsequently tested on example problems drawn from the literature. The numerical experiments suggest that the proposed algorithm is a viable solution method for this problem

    Active Processor Scheduling Using Evolution Algorithms

    The allocation of processes to processors has long been of interest to engineers. The processor allocation problem considered here assigns multiple applications onto a computing system. With this algorithm researchers could more efficiently examine real-time sensor data like that used by United States Air Force digital signal processing efforts or real-time aerosol hazard detection as examined by the Department of Homeland Security. Different choices for the design of a load balancing algorithm are examined in both the problem and algorithm domains. Evolutionary algorithms are used to find near-optimal solutions. These algorithms incorporate multiobjective coevolutionary and parallel principles to create an effective and efficient algorithm for real-world allocation problems. Three evolutionary algorithms (EA) are developed. The primary algorithm generates a solution to the processor allocation problem. This allocation EA is capable of evaluating objectives in both an aggregate single objective and a Pareto multiobjective manner. The other two EAs are designed for fine turning returned allocation EA solutions. One coevolutionary algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of the allocation algorithm. This meta-EA is parallelized using a coarse-grain approach to improve performance. Experiments are conducted that validate the improved effectiveness of the parallelized algorithm. Pareto multiobjective approach is used to optimize both effectiveness and efficiency objectives. The other coevolutionary algorithm generates difficult allocation problems for testing the capabilities of the allocation EA. The effectiveness of both coevolutionary algorithms for optimizing the allocation EA is examined quantitatively using standard statistical methods.     Hybrid of memory andprediction strategies for dynamic multiobjective optimization

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Dynamic multiobjective optimization problems (DMOPs) are characterized by a time-variant Pareto optimal front (PF) and/or Pareto optimal set (PS). To handle DMOPs, an algorithm should be able to track the movement of the PF/PS over time efficiently. In this paper, a novel dynamic multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (DMOEA) is proposed for solving DMOPs, which includes a hybrid of memory and prediction strategies (HMPS) and the multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D). In particular, the resultant algorithm (MOEA/D-HMPS) detects environmental changes and identifies the similarity of a change to the historical changes, based on which two different response strategies are applied. If a detected change is dissimilar to any historical changes, a differential prediction based on the previous two consecutive population centers is utilized to relocate the population individuals in the new environment; otherwise, a memory-based technique devised to predict the new locations of the population members is applied. Both response mechanisms mix a portion of existing solutions with randomly generated solutions to alleviate the effect of prediction errors caused by sharp or irregular changes. MOEA/D-HMPS was tested on 14 benchmark problems and compared with state-of-the-art DMOEAs. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of MOEA/D-HMPS in solving various DMOPs

    Ergonomic Chair Design by Fusing Qualitative and Quantitative Criteria using Interactive Genetic Algorithms

    This paper emphasizes the necessity of formally bringing qualitative and quantitative criteria of ergonomic design together, and provides a novel complementary design framework with this aim. Within this framework, different design criteria are viewed as optimization objectives; and design solutions are iteratively improved through the cooperative efforts of computer and user. The framework is rooted in multi-objective optimization, genetic algorithms and interactive user evaluation. Three different algorithms based on the framework are developed, and tested with an ergonomic chair design problem. The parallel and multi-objective approaches show promising results in fitness convergence, design diversity and user satisfaction metrics
