    An Improved Sideband Current Harmonic Model of Interior PMSM Drive by Considering Magnetic Saturation and Cross-Coupling Effects

    The sideband current harmonics, as parasitic characteristics in permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives with space vector pulsewidth modulation technique, will increase the corresponding electromagnetic loss, torque ripple, vibration, and acoustic noises. Therefore, fast yet accurate evaluation of the resultant sideband current harmonic components is of particular importance during the design stage of the drive system. However, the inevitable magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects in interior PMSM drives would have a significant impact on the current components, while the existing analytical sideband current harmonic model neglects those effects. This paper introduces a significant improvement on the analytical model by taking into account these effects with corresponding nonlinear factors. Experimental results are carried out to underpin the accuracy improvements of the predictions from the proposed model over the existing analytical one. The proposed model can offer a very detailed and insightful revelation of impacts of the magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects on the corresponding sideband current harmonics

    Comparison between unipolar and bipolar single phase grid-connected inverters for PV applications

    An inverter is essential for the interfacing of photovoltaic panels with the AC network. There are many possible inverter topologies and inverter switching schemes and each one will have its own relative advantages and disadvantages. Efficiency and output current distortion are two important factors governing the choice of inverter system. In this paper, it is argued that current controlled inverters offer significant advantages from the point of view of minimisation of current distortion. Two inverter switching strategies are explored in detail. These are the unipolar current controlled inverter and the bipolar current controlled inverter. With respect to low frequency distortion, previously published works provide theoretical arguments in favour of bipolar switching. On the other hand it has also been argued that the unipolar switched inverter offers reduced switching losses and generates less EMI. On efficiency grounds, it appears that the unipolar switched inverter has an advantage. However, experimental results presented in this paper show that the level of low frequency current distortion in the unipolar switched inverter is such that it can only comply with Australian Standard 4777.2 above a minimum output current. On the other hand it is shown that at the same current levels bipolar switching results in reduced low frequency harmonics

    Hybrid sensorless control of PMSM in full speed range using HFI and back-EMF

    The permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are more and more used because of their high performance compared with other AC motors. The present paper proposes a hybrid controller which consists of a high frequency injection estimator and a back-electromotive-force observer in full speed range for the sensorless control of PMSM. The aim objective of the study to prevent speed overshot in startup time of the motor and provides a better dynamic response in transient and permanent states using this structure. A hybrid algorithm is applied to realize a smooth transition from low to high speed. At standstill and very low speed region, HF injection technique is used to detect the rotor initial position. In this first step study, the position estimation is derived from a HF current injection by using only one filter. When the rotor speed goes up to a certain value where back-EMF can provide adequate information, a back-EMF observer will dominate. Thanks to this structure, the mechanical sensor can be engaged using the best estimates and the developed control method is fast, simple, and flexible. The effectiveness, superiority, and performance of the proposed control method and extensive simulation results are provided on a 1 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor drive, demonstrating the expected performances

    GA-tuning of nonlinear observers for sensorless control of automotive power steering IPMSMs

    The paper considers two observer-based rotor position estimation schemes for sensorless control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) for use in future automotive power steering systems. Specifically, emphasis is given to techniques based on feedback-linearisation followed by classical Luenberger observer design, and direct design of non-linear observers. Genetic algorithms (GAs), using the principles of evolution, natural selection and genetic mutation, are introduced to address difficulties in selecting correction gains for the observers, since no analytical tuning mechanisms yet exist. Experimental measurements from an automotive power steering test-facility are included, to demonstrate the enhanced performance attributes offered by tuning the proposed observer schemes, online, in this manner

    Novel measurement based load modeling and demand side control methods for fault induced delayed voltage recovery mitigation

    The continuous increase in electric energy demand and limitations in the reinforcement of generation and transmission systems, have progressively led to a greater utilization of power systems and transmission lines. As a result, system conditions may arise where voltage collapse phenomena have a high probability to occur, either due to the accidents in the system structure, or to load becoming particularly heavy. Recently, Workshop on Residential Air Conditioner (A/C) Stalling of Department of Energy (DOE) reported that fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) is now a national issue since residential A/C penetration across U.S. is at an all time high and growing rapidly. The unique characteristics of air conditioner load could cause short-term voltage instability, fast voltage collapse, and delayed voltage recovery. In order to study and mitigate FIDVR problem, a systematic load modeling methodology utilizing novel parameter identification technique and an online demand side control scheme based on load shedding strategy are developed in this dissertation. As load characteristics change from traditional incandescent light bulbs to power electronics-based loads, and as the characteristics of motors change with the emergence of high-efficiency, low-inertia motor loads, it is critical to understand and model load responses to ensure stable operations of the power system during different contingencies. Developing better load models, therefore, has been an important issue for power system analysis and control. It is necessary to take advantage of the state-of-the-art techniques for load modeling and develop a systematic approach to establish accurate, aggregate load models for bulk power system stability studies. In this dissertation, a systematic methodology is provided to derive aggregate load models at the high voltage level (transmission system level) using measurement-based approach. A novel parameter identification technique via hybrid learning is also developed for deriving load model parameters accurately and efficiently. According to NERC\u27s definition, FIDVR is defined as the phenomenon whereby system voltage remains at significantly reduced levels for several seconds after a fault in transmission, subtransmission, or distribution has been cleared. Various studies have shown that FIDVR usually occurs in the areas dominated by induction motors with constant torque. These motors can stall in response to sustained low voltage and draw excessive reactive power from the power grid. Since no under voltage or stall protection is equipped with A/Cs, they can only be tripped by thermal protection which takes 3 to 20 seconds. Severe FIDVR event could lead to fast voltage collapse. In this dissertation, a novel online demand side control method utilizing motor kinetic energy is developed for disconnecting stalling motors at the transmission level to mitigate FIDVR and fast voltage collapse

    Electric vehicles (EVs) are playing a vital role in sustainable transportation. It is estimated that by 2030, Battery EVs will become mainstream for passenger car transportation. Even though EVs are gaining interest in sustainable transportation, the future of EV power transmission is facing vital concerns and open research challenges. Considering the case of torque ripple mitigation and improved reliability control techniques in motors, many motor drive control algorithms fail to provide efficient control. To efficiently address this issue, control techniques such as Field Orientation Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), Model Predictive Control (MPC), Sliding Mode Control (SMC), and Intelligent Control (IC) techniques are used in the motor drive control algorithms. This literature survey exclusively compares the various advanced control techniques for conventionally used EV motors such as Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDC), Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), and Induction Motors (IM). Furthermore, this paper discusses the EV-motors history, types of EVmotors, EV-motor drives powertrain mathematical modelling, and design procedure of EV-motors. The hardware results have also been compared with different control techniques for BLDC and SRM hub motors. Future direction towards the design of EV by critical selection of motors and their control techniques to minimize the torque ripple and other research opportunities to enhance the performance of EVs are also presented.publishedVersio
