Spotting Trees with Few Leaves
We show two results related to the Hamiltonicity and -Path algorithms in
undirected graphs by Bj\"orklund [FOCS'10], and Bj\"orklund et al., [arXiv'10].
First, we demonstrate that the technique used can be generalized to finding
some -vertex tree with leaves in an -vertex undirected graph in
time. It can be applied as a subroutine to solve the
-Internal Spanning Tree (-IST) problem in
time using polynomial space, improving upon previous algorithms for this
problem. In particular, for the first time we break the natural barrier of
. Second, we show that the iterated random bipartition employed by
the algorithm can be improved whenever the host graph admits a vertex coloring
with few colors; it can be an ordinary proper vertex coloring, a fractional
vertex coloring, or a vector coloring. In effect, we show improved bounds for
-Path and Hamiltonicity in any graph of maximum degree
or with vector chromatic number at most 8
Reinforcement learning based local search for grouping problems: A case study on graph coloring
Grouping problems aim to partition a set of items into multiple mutually
disjoint subsets according to some specific criterion and constraints. Grouping
problems cover a large class of important combinatorial optimization problems
that are generally computationally difficult. In this paper, we propose a
general solution approach for grouping problems, i.e., reinforcement learning
based local search (RLS), which combines reinforcement learning techniques with
descent-based local search. The viability of the proposed approach is verified
on a well-known representative grouping problem (graph coloring) where a very
simple descent-based coloring algorithm is applied. Experimental studies on
popular DIMACS and COLOR02 benchmark graphs indicate that RLS achieves
competitive performances compared to a number of well-known coloring
algorithms
Algorithms for the minimum sum coloring problem: a review
The Minimum Sum Coloring Problem (MSCP) is a variant of the well-known vertex
coloring problem which has a number of AI related applications. Due to its
theoretical and practical relevance, MSCP attracts increasing attention. The
only existing review on the problem dates back to 2004 and mainly covers the
history of MSCP and theoretical developments on specific graphs. In recent
years, the field has witnessed significant progresses on approximation
algorithms and practical solution algorithms. The purpose of this review is to
provide a comprehensive inspection of the most recent and representative MSCP
algorithms. To be informative, we identify the general framework followed by
practical solution algorithms and the key ingredients that make them
successful. By classifying the main search strategies and putting forward the
critical elements of the reviewed methods, we wish to encourage future
development of more powerful methods and motivate new applications
Approximation Algorithms for Partially Colorable Graphs
Graph coloring problems are a central topic of study in the theory of algorithms. We study the problem of partially coloring partially colorable graphs. For alpha = alpha |V| such that the graph induced on S is k-colorable. Partial k-colorability is a more robust structural property of a graph than k-colorability. For graphs that arise in practice, partial k-colorability might be a better notion to use than k-colorability, since data arising in practice often contains various forms of noise.
We give a polynomial time algorithm that takes as input a (1 - epsilon)-partially 3-colorable graph G and a constant gamma in [epsilon, 1/10], and colors a (1 - epsilon/gamma) fraction of the vertices using O~(n^{0.25 + O(gamma^{1/2})}) colors. We also study natural semi-random families of instances of partially 3-colorable graphs and partially 2-colorable graphs, and give stronger bi-criteria approximation guarantees for these family of instances
A Hybrid Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm for Graph 3-Coloring
The Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) is the name of an optimization algorithm that
was inspired by the intelligent behavior of a honey bee swarm. It is widely
recognized as a quick, reliable, and efficient methods for solving optimization
problems. This paper proposes a hybrid ABC (HABC) algorithm for graph
3-coloring, which is a well-known discrete optimization problem. The results of
HABC are compared with results of the well-known graph coloring algorithms of
today, i.e. the Tabucol and Hybrid Evolutionary algorithm (HEA) and results of
the traditional evolutionary algorithm with SAW method (EA-SAW). Extensive
experimentations has shown that the HABC matched the competitive results of the
best graph coloring algorithms, and did better than the traditional heuristics
EA-SAW when solving equi-partite, flat, and random generated medium-sized
graphs
Approximate Graph Coloring by Semidefinite Programming
We consider the problem of coloring k-colorable graphs with the fewest
possible colors. We present a randomized polynomial time algorithm that colors
a 3-colorable graph on vertices with min O(Delta^{1/3} log^{1/2} Delta log
n), O(n^{1/4} log^{1/2} n) colors where Delta is the maximum degree of any
vertex. Besides giving the best known approximation ratio in terms of n, this
marks the first non-trivial approximation result as a function of the maximum
degree Delta. This result can be generalized to k-colorable graphs to obtain a
coloring using min O(Delta^{1-2/k} log^{1/2} Delta log n), O(n^{1-3/(k+1)}
log^{1/2} n) colors. Our results are inspired by the recent work of Goemans and
Williamson who used an algorithm for semidefinite optimization problems, which
generalize linear programs, to obtain improved approximations for the MAX CUT
and MAX 2-SAT problems. An intriguing outcome of our work is a duality
relationship established between the value of the optimum solution to our
semidefinite program and the Lovasz theta-function. We show lower bounds on the
gap between the optimum solution of our semidefinite program and the actual
chromatic number; by duality this also demonstrates interesting new facts about
the theta-function
Distributed -Coloring in Sublogarithmic Rounds
We give a new randomized distributed algorithm for -coloring in
the LOCAL model, running in
rounds in a graph of maximum degree~. This implies that the
-coloring problem is easier than the maximal independent set
problem and the maximal matching problem, due to their lower bounds of by Kuhn, Moscibroda, and Wattenhofer [PODC'04].
Our algorithm also extends to list-coloring where the palette of each node
contains colors. We extend the set of distributed symmetry-breaking
techniques by performing a decomposition of graphs into dense and sparse parts
Using Differential Evolution for the Graph Coloring
Differential evolution was developed for reliable and versatile function
optimization. It has also become interesting for other domains because of its
ease to use. In this paper, we posed the question of whether differential
evolution can also be used by solving of the combinatorial optimization
problems, and in particular, for the graph coloring problem. Therefore, a
hybrid self-adaptive differential evolution algorithm for graph coloring was
proposed that is comparable with the best heuristics for graph coloring today,
i.e. Tabucol of Hertz and de Werra and the hybrid evolutionary algorithm of
Galinier and Hao. We have focused on the graph 3-coloring. Therefore, the
evolutionary algorithm with method SAW of Eiben et al., which achieved
excellent results for this kind of graphs, was also incorporated into this
study. The extensive experiments show that the differential evolution could
become a competitive tool for the solving of graph coloring problem in the
future
