    Achieving a better balance between productivity and performance on FPGAs through Heterogeneous Extensible Multiprocessor Systems

    Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) were first introduced circa 1980, and they held the promise of delivering performance levels associated with customized circuits, but with productivity levels more closely associated with software development. Achieving both performance and productivity objectives has been a long standing challenge problem for the reconfigurable computing community and remains unsolved today. On one hand, Vendor supplied design flows have tended towards achieving the high levels of performance through gate level customization, but at the cost of very low productivity. On the other hand, FPGA densities are following Moore\u27s law and and can now support complete multiprocessor system architectures. Thus FPGAs can be turned into an architecture with programmable processors which brings productivity but sacrifices the peak performance advantages of custom circuits. In this thesis we explore how the two use cases can be combined to achieve the best from both. The flexibility of the FPGAs to host a heterogeneous multiprocessor system with different types of programmable processors and custom accelerators allows the software developers to design a platform that matches the unique performance needs of their application. However, currently no automated approaches are publicly available to create such heterogeneous architectures as well as the software support for these platforms. Creating base architectures, configuring multiple tool chains, and repetitive engineering design efforts can and should be automated. This thesis introduces Heterogeneous Extensible Multiprocessor System (HEMPS) template approach which allows an FPGA to be programmed with productivity levels close to those associated with parallel processing, and with performance levels close to those associated with customized circuits. The work in this thesis introduces an ArchGen script to automate the generation of HEMPS systems as well as a library of portable and self tuning polymorphic functions. These tools will abstract away the HW/SW co-design details and provide a transparent programming language to capture different levels of parallelisms, without sacrificing productivity or portability

    Synthesis Techniques for Semi-Custom Dynamically Reconfigurable Superscalar Processors

    The accelerated adoption of reconfigurable computing foreshadows a computational paradigm shift, aimed at fulfilling the need of customizable yet high-performance flexible hardware. Reconfigurable computing fulfills this need by allowing the physical resources of a chip to be adapted to the computational requirements of a specific program, thus achieving higher levels of computing performance. This dissertation evaluates the area requirements for reconfigurable processing, an important yet often disregarded assessment for partial reconfiguration. Common reconfigurable computing approaches today attempt to create custom circuitry in static co-processor accelerators. We instead focused on a new approach that synthesized semi-custom general-purpose processor cores. Each superscalar processor core's execution units can be customized for a particular application, yet the processor retains its standard microprocessor interface. We analyzed the area consumption for these computational components by studying the synthesis requirements of different processor configurations. This area/performance assessment aids designers when constraining processing elements in a fixed-size area slot, a requirement for modern partial reconfiguration approaches. Our results provide a more deterministic evaluation of performance density, hence making the area cost analysis less ambiguous when optimizing dynamic systems for coarse-grained parallelism. The results obtained showed that even though performance density decreases with processor complexity, the additional area still provides a positive contribution to the aggregate parallel processing performance. This evaluation of parallel execution density contributes to ongoing efforts in the field of reconfigurable computing by providing a baseline for area/performance trade-offs for partial reconfiguration and multi-processor systems

    Modeling and Mapping of Optimized Schedules for Embedded Signal Processing Systems

    The demand for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in embedded systems has been increasing rapidly due to the proliferation of multimedia- and communication-intensive devices such as pervasive tablets and smart phones. Efficient implementation of embedded DSP systems requires integration of diverse hardware and software components, as well as dynamic workload distribution across heterogeneous computational resources. The former implies increased complexity of application modeling and analysis, but also brings enhanced potential for achieving improved energy consumption, cost or performance. The latter results from the increased use of dynamic behavior in embedded DSP applications. Furthermore, parallel programming is highly relevant in many embedded DSP areas due to the development and use of Multiprocessor System-On-Chip (MPSoC) technology. The need for efficient cooperation among different devices supporting diverse parallel embedded computations motivates high-level modeling that expresses dynamic signal processing behaviors and supports efficient task scheduling and hardware mapping. Starting with dynamic modeling, this thesis develops a systematic design methodology that supports functional simulation and hardware mapping of dynamic reconfiguration based on Parameterized Synchronous Dataflow (PSDF) graphs. By building on the DIF (Dataflow Interchange Format), which is a design language and associated software package for developing and experimenting with dataflow-based design techniques for signal processing systems, we have developed a novel tool for functional simulation of PSDF specifications. This simulation tool allows designers to model applications in PSDF and simulate their functionality, including use of the dynamic parameter reconfiguration capabilities offered by PSDF. With the help of this simulation tool, our design methodology helps to map PSDF specifications into efficient implementations on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Furthermore, valid schedules can be derived from the PSDF models at runtime to adapt hardware configurations based on changing data characteristics or operational requirements. Under certain conditions, efficient quasi-static schedules can be applied to reduce overhead and enhance predictability in the scheduling process. Motivated by the fact that scheduling is critical to performance and to efficient use of dynamic reconfiguration, we have focused on a methodology for schedule design, which complements the emphasis on automated schedule construction in the existing literature on dataflow-based design and implementation. In particular, we have proposed a dataflow-based schedule design framework called the dataflow schedule graph (DSG), which provides a graphical framework for schedule construction based on dataflow semantics, and can also be used as an intermediate representation target for automated schedule generation. Our approach to applying the DSG in this thesis emphasizes schedule construction as a design process rather than an outcome of the synthesis process. Our approach employs dataflow graphs for representing both application models and schedules that are derived from them. By providing a dataflow-integrated framework for unambiguously representing, analyzing, manipulating, and interchanging schedules, the DSG facilitates effective codesign of dataflow-based application models and schedules for execution of these models. As multicore processors are deployed in an increasing variety of embedded image processing systems, effective utilization of resources such as multiprocessor systemon-chip (MPSoC) devices, and effective handling of implementation concerns such as memory management and I/O become critical to developing efficient embedded implementations. However, the diversity and complexity of applications and architectures in embedded image processing systems make the mapping of applications onto MPSoCs difficult. We help to address this challenge through a structured design methodology that is built upon the DSG modeling framework. We refer to this methodology as the DEIPS methodology (DSG-based design and implementation of Embedded Image Processing Systems). The DEIPS methodology provides a unified framework for joint consideration of DSG structures and the application graphs from which they are derived, which allows designers to integrate considerations of parallelization and resource constraints together with the application modeling process. We demonstrate the DEIPS methodology through cases studies on practical embedded image processing systems

    Memory hierarchy and data communication in heterogeneous reconfigurable SoCs

    The miniaturization race in the hardware industry aiming at continuous increasing of transistor density on a die does not bring respective application performance improvements any more. One of the most promising alternatives is to exploit a heterogeneous nature of common applications in hardware. Supported by reconfigurable computation, which has already proved its efficiency in accelerating data intensive applications, this concept promises a breakthrough in contemporary technology development. Memory organization in such heterogeneous reconfigurable architectures becomes very critical. Two primary aspects introduce a sophisticated trade-off. On the one hand, a memory subsystem should provide well organized distributed data structure and guarantee the required data bandwidth. On the other hand, it should hide the heterogeneous hardware structure from the end-user, in order to support feasible high-level programmability of the system. This thesis work explores the heterogeneous reconfigurable hardware architectures and presents possible solutions to cope the problem of memory organization and data structure. By the example of the MORPHEUS heterogeneous platform, the discussion follows the complete design cycle, starting from decision making and justification, until hardware realization. Particular emphasis is made on the methods to support high system performance, meet application requirements, and provide a user-friendly programmer interface. As a result, the research introduces a complete heterogeneous platform enhanced with a hierarchical memory organization, which copes with its task by means of separating computation from communication, providing reconfigurable engines with computation and configuration data, and unification of heterogeneous computational devices using local storage buffers. It is distinguished from the related solutions by distributed data-flow organization, specifically engineered mechanisms to operate with data on local domains, particular communication infrastructure based on Network-on-Chip, and thorough methods to prevent computation and communication stalls.     abstract: The holy grail of computer hardware across all market segments has been to sustain performance improvement at the same pace as silicon technology scales. As the technology scales and the size of transistors shrinks, the power consumption and energy usage per transistor decrease. On the other hand, the transistor density increases significantly by technology scaling. Due to technology factors, the reduction in power consumption per transistor is not sufficient to offset the increase in power consumption per unit area. Therefore, to improve performance, increasing energy-efficiency must be addressed at all design levels from circuit level to application and algorithm levels. At architectural level, one promising approach is to populate the system with hardware accelerators each optimized for a specific task. One drawback of hardware accelerators is that they are not programmable. Therefore, their utilization can be low as they perform one specific function. Using software programmable accelerators is an alternative approach to achieve high energy-efficiency and programmability. Due to intrinsic characteristics of software accelerators, they can exploit both instruction level parallelism and data level parallelism. Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture (CGRA) is a software programmable accelerator consists of a number of word-level functional units. Motivated by promising characteristics of software programmable accelerators, the potentials of CGRAs in future computing platforms is studied and an end-to-end CGRA research framework is developed. This framework consists of three different aspects: CGRA architectural design, integration in a computing system, and CGRA compiler. First, the design and implementation of a CGRA and its instruction set is presented. This design is then modeled in a cycle accurate system simulator. The simulation platform enables us to investigate several problems associated with a CGRA when it is deployed as an accelerator in a computing system. Next, the problem of mapping a compute intensive region of a program to CGRAs is formulated. From this formulation, several efficient algorithms are developed which effectively utilize CGRA scarce resources very well to minimize the running time of input applications. Les architectures reconfigurables Ă  large grain sont en mesure de combler les lacunes existantes entre le FPGA (architecture reconfigurable Ă  grain fin) et le processeur. Elles contrastent gĂ©nĂ©ralement avec les Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) en ce qui concerne la performance (moins bonnes) et la flexibilitĂ© (meilleures). La programmation d’architectures reconfigurables est un dĂ©fi qui date depuis longtemps et pose plusieurs problĂšmes. Cette architecture est semblable aux architectures reconfigurables Ă  large grain (Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture-CGRAs-), mais contrĂŽlĂ©e par les donnĂ©es.----------ABSTRACT Coarse-grained reconfigurable computing architectures have become an important research topic because of their high potential to accelerate a wide range of applications. These architectures apply the concurrent nature of hardware architecture to accelerate computations. Substantially, coarse-grained reconfigurable computing architectures can fill up existing gaps between FPGAs and processor. They typically contrast with Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) in connection with performance and flexibility. Programming reconfigurable computing architectures is a long-standing challenge, and it is yet extremely inconvenient. Programmers must be aware of hardware features and also it is assumed that they have a good knowledge of hardware description languages such as VHDL and Verilog, instead of the sequential programming paradigm. Implementing an algorithm on FPGA is intrinsically more difficult than programming a processor or a GPU. Processor-based implementations “only” require a program to control their pre-synthesized data path, while an FPGA requires that a designer creates a new data path and a new controller for each application. Nevertheless, conceiving an architecture that best exploits the millions of logic cells and the thousands of dedicated arithmetic resources available in an FPGA is a time-consuming challenge that only talented experts in circuit design can handle. This project is founded on the generic data-driven compute fabric proposed by Prof. J.P. David and implemented by M. Allard, a previous master student. This architecture is composed of three main individual components: the Shared Arithmetic Logic Unit (SALU), the Token State Machine (TSM) and the FIFO Bank (FB). The architecture is somewhat similar to Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs), but it is data-driven. Indeed, in that architecture, register banks are replaced by FBs and the controllers are TSMs. The operations start as soon as the operands are available in the FIFOs that contain the operands. Data travel from FBs to FBs through the SALU, as programmed in the configuration memory of the TSMs. Final results return in FIFOs

    Exploiting tightly-coupled cores

Inter-core communication is only possible via memory and control over a core’s resources is localised. Specialisation necessary to meet today’s challenging energy targets is typically provided through the provision of a range of processor types and accelerators. An alternative approach is to permit specialisation by tailoring the way a large number of homogeneous cores are used. The approach here is to relax processor boundaries, create a richer mix of intercore communication mechanisms and provide finer-grain control over, and access to, the resources of each core. We evaluate one such design, called Loki, that aims to support specialisation in software on a homogeneous many-core architecture. We focus on the design of a single 8-core tile, conceived as the building block for a larger many-core system. We explore the tile’s ability to support a range of parallelisation opportunities and detail the control and communication mechanisms needed to exploit each core’s resources in a flexible manner.     Ubik: efficient cache sharing with strict qos for latency-critical workloads

    Chip-multiprocessors (CMPs) must often execute workload mixes with different performance requirements. On one hand, user-facing, latency-critical applications (e.g., web search) need low tail (i.e., worst-case) latencies, often in the millisecond range, and have inherently low utilization. On the other hand, compute-intensive batch applications (e.g., MapReduce) only need high long-term average performance. In current CMPs, latency-critical and batch applications cannot run concurrently due to interference on shared resources. Unfortunately, prior work on quality of service (QoS) in CMPs has focused on guaranteeing average performance, not tail latency. In this work, we analyze several latency-critical workloads, and show that guaranteeing average performance is insufficient to maintain low tail latency, because microarchitectural resources with state, such as caches or cores, exert inertia on instantaneous workload performance. Last-level caches impart the highest inertia, as workloads take tens of milliseconds to warm them up. When left unmanaged, or when managed with conventional QoS frameworks, shared last-level caches degrade tail latency significantly. Instead, we propose Ubik, a dynamic partitioning technique that predicts and exploits the transient behavior of latency-critical workloads to maintain their tail latency while maximizing the cache space available to batch applications. Using extensive simulations, we show that, while conventional QoS frameworks degrade tail latency by up to 2.3x, Ubik simultaneously maintains the tail latency of latency-critical workloads and significantly improves the performance of batch applications.United States.
