    Active Ontology: An Information Integration Approach for Dynamic Information Sources

    In this paper we describe an ontology-based information integration approach that is suitable for highly dynamic distributed information sources, such as those available in Grid systems. The main challenges addressed are: 1) information changes frequently and information requests have to be answered quickly in order to provide up-to-date information; and 2) the most suitable information sources have to be selected from a set of different distributed ones that can provide the information needed. To deal with the first challenge we use an information cache that works with an update-on-demand policy. To deal with the second we add an information source selection step to the usual architecture used for ontology-based information integration. To illustrate our approach, we have developed an information service that aggregates metadata available in hundreds of information services of the EGEE Grid infrastructure

    An Ontology Based Approach To The Integration Of Heterogeneous Information Systems Supporting Integrated Provincial Administration In Khon Kaen, Thailand

    Information systems are a necessity to the administration of organizations. In a recent reform to the Thai administration, the governor of each province is entrusted with the full responsibility for the strategic planning and execution of the Integrated Provincial Administration (IPA). This presents a big challenge and many difficult problems for a potentially fast growing, both economically and demographically, province, such as Khon Kaen. To provide the administrator of the province with reliable and up to date information, the Provincial Operation Centre (POC) has been set up and assigned the task of collecting all required information from disparate information systems, many of which are legacy systems. This information lacks interoperability and integration of data due to many different structures and semantic heterogeneity encountered in many information systems. This research is a part of a collaborative data sources community development project. It attempts to aid high-level decision makers by using ontology to resolve heterogeneities among many disparate data sources. After relevant data sources are identified, they are analysed to reveal important and corresponding concepts, attributes and relations. They are then used in the creation of ontologies to resolve schematic and semantic conflicts in the data sources. The integration of many heterogeneous information systems will provide a unified view of information facilitating the provincial administrator in his decision making

    City Data Fusion: Sensor Data Fusion in the Internet of Things

    Internet of Things (IoT) has gained substantial attention recently and play a significant role in smart city application deployments. A number of such smart city applications depend on sensor fusion capabilities in the cloud from diverse data sources. We introduce the concept of IoT and present in detail ten different parameters that govern our sensor data fusion evaluation framework. We then evaluate the current state-of-the art in sensor data fusion against our sensor data fusion framework. Our main goal is to examine and survey different sensor data fusion research efforts based on our evaluation framework.     MDDQL: an ontology driven, multi-lingual query language and system for an integrated view of heterogeneous data sources

    Query languages and keywords based search engines are conventionally specified and implemented with the emphasis put on syntactic rules to which query typing and answering must be bound. MDDQL is a query language and system that operates on a semantic model in terms of a graph based ontology. As a software technology, MDDQL allows the meaning of/and associations between information to be known and processed at execution time at following levels: (a) driving the user to the construction of, as meaningful as possible, queries with an advanced concept-based search method, (b) resolving high level queries into various data source specific query statements. In addition, queries can be posed in more than one natural sub-language. The major goal behind this approach has been the simplification and scalability of both tasks: query construction, even within multi-lingual user communities, and addressing of a large number of possibly semantically heterogeneous data sources in a distributed environment

    Specifications and Development of Interoperability Solution dedicated to Multiple Expertise Collaboration in a Design Framework

    This paper describes the specifications of an interoperability platform based on the PPO (Product Process Organization) model developed by the French community IPPOP in the context of collaborative and innovative design. By using PPO model as a reference, this work aims to connect together heterogonous tools used by experts easing data and information exchanges. After underlining the growing needs of collaborative design process, this paper focuses on interoperability concept by describing current solutions and their limits. Then a solution based on the flexibility of the PPO model adapted to the philosophy of interoperability is proposed. To illustrate these concepts, several examples are more particularly described (robustness analysis, CAD and Product Lifecycle Management systems connections)

    Financial Information Mediation: A Case Study of Standards Integration for Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment Using the COIN Mediation Technology

    Each player in the financial industry, each bank, stock exchange, government agency, or insurance company operates its own financial information system or systems. By its very nature, financial information, like the money that it represents, changes hands. Therefore the interoperation of financial information systems is the cornerstone of the financial services they support. E-services frameworks such as web services are an unprecedented opportunity for the flexible interoperation of financial systems. Naturally the critical economic role and the complexity of financial information led to the development of various standards. Yet standards alone are not the panacea: different groups of players use different standards or different interpretations of the same standard. We believe that the solution lies in the convergence of flexible E-services such as web-services and semantically rich meta-data as promised by the semantic Web; then a mediation architecture can be used for the documentation, identification, and resolution of semantic conflicts arising from the interoperation of heterogeneous financial services. In this paper we illustrate the nature of the problem in the Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment (EBPP) industry and the viability of the solution we propose. We describe and analyze the integration of services using four different formats: the IFX, OFX and SWIFT standards, and an example proprietary format. To accomplish this integration we use the COntext INterchange (COIN) framework.
