Behavioral Foundations of Microcredit: Experimental and Survey Evidence From Rural India
This paper draws a link between self-control problems and the contractual mechanisms of microcredit. We use a series of âlab experiments in the fieldâ which were designed to elicit measures of time discounting on a sample of 573 individuals in rural Karnataka, India. Evidence from the experiments were integrated with individual survey data on the economic and financial lives of villagers. One third of participants made choices consistent with hyperbolic preferences (more impatient now than in the future), and would be made better off if they could discipline their time inconsistent preferences. While hyperbolic preferences have been often associated with saving behavior, we describe links to borrowing as well. We find that âhyperbolicâ women save a lower share of their savings at home and save less in total levels. Women with hyperbolic preferences are also more likely to borrow--and to do so through microcredit institutions specifically. The finding highlights the role of the fixed and frequent installment schedule ubiquitous in microcredit contracts. While microcredit contracts are celebrated for mitigating informational asymmetries, the evidence suggests that they also offer helpful structure for people with self-discipline problems who seek to accumulate capital but who lack suitable contractual saving devices.banking; : time preference, hyperbolic discounting, loan contracts, microfinance
Exact Solutions for M/M/c/Setup Queues
Recently multiserver queues with setup times have been extensively studied
because they have applications in power-saving data centers. The most
challenging model is the M/M//Setup queue where a server is turned off when
it is idle and is turned on if there are some waiting jobs. Recently, Gandhi et
al.~(SIGMETRICS 2013, QUESTA 2014) present the recursive renewal reward
approach as a new mathematical tool to analyze the model. In this paper, we
derive exact solutions for the same model using two alternative methodologies:
generating function approach and matrix analytic method. The former yields
several theoretical insights into the systems while the latter provides an
exact recursive algorithm to calculate the joint stationary distribution and
then some performance measures so as to give new application insights.Comment: Submitted for revie
Logisticsâ place in the global administration of the productâs life cycle
If logistics can be considered an assembly of methods, functions, and ways used by a company with the purpose of giving clients the goods taken at a low price and in a period of time according to clientsâ expectations, taking into consideration the quantities settled by contract, we can say that, in a company, the logistics functionality contributes to coordination the offer by requiring the lowest costs, based on some strategic and tactics plans as well as keeping qualitative relations between suppliers and clients. Logistics can be said to represent the optimization of the companyâs both fundamental cycles: the cycle-client (from order to delivery) and the project-cycle (from conception to use). From this point of view, this is an essential component of both the strategy and the companiesâ organization. Some companies in West Europe have moved or created new production plants in Centre and East Europe, mainly in the new member states of the European Union (NOKIA from Germany to Romania, RENAULT from France to Romania etc.). This is based on some detailed research on the importance that a functional logistics of industrial platforms has taking into consideration both raw materials and clientsâ satisfaction, who, more often than not is far from the production place.client, distribution, performance, supplier, supply.

Single server retrial queues with speed scaling: analysis and performance evaluation
Recently, queues with speed scaling have received considerable attention due to their applicability to data centers, enabling a better balance between performance and energy consumption. This paper proposes a new model where blocked customers must leave the service area and retry after a random time, with retrial rate either varying proportionally to the number of retrying customers (linear retrial rate) or non-varying (constant retrial rate). For both, we first study a basic case and then subsequently incorporate the concepts of a setup time and a deactivation time in extended versions of the model. In all cases, we obtain a full characterization of the stationary queue length distribution. This allows us to evaluate the performance in terms of the mentioned balance between performance and energy, using an existing cost function as well as a newly proposed variant thereof. This paper presents the derivation of the stationary distribution as well as several numerical examples of the cost-based performance evaluation
Approximating multiple class queueing models with loss models
Multiple class queueing models arise in situations where some flexibility is sought through pooling of demands for different services. Earlier research has shown that most of the benefits of flexibility can be obtained with only a small proportion of cross-trained operators. Predicting the performance of a system with different types of demands and operator pools with different skills is very difficult. We present an approximation method that is based on equivalent loss systems. We successively develop approximations for the waiting probability, The average waiting time and the service level. Our approximations are validated using a series of simulations. Along the way we present some interesting insights into some similarities between queueing systems and equivalent loss systems that have to our knowledge never been reported in the literature.
EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON QUEUEING THEORY 2016
International audienceThis booklet contains the proceedings of the second European Conference in Queueing Theory (ECQT) that was held from the 18th to the 20th of July 2016 at the engineering school ENSEEIHT, Toulouse, France. ECQT is a biannual event where scientists and technicians in queueing theory and related areas get together to promote research, encourage interaction and exchange ideas. The spirit of the conference is to be a queueing event organized from within Europe, but open to participants from all over the world. The technical program of the 2016 edition consisted of 112 presentations organized in 29 sessions covering all trends in queueing theory, including the development of the theory, methodology advances, computational aspects and applications. Another exciting feature of ECQT2016 was the institution of the TakĂĄcs Award for outstanding PhD thesis on "Queueing Theory and its Applications"
