RF-Powered Cognitive Radio Networks: Technical Challenges and Limitations
The increasing demand for spectral and energy efficient communication
networks has spurred a great interest in energy harvesting (EH) cognitive radio
networks (CRNs). Such a revolutionary technology represents a paradigm shift in
the development of wireless networks, as it can simultaneously enable the
efficient use of the available spectrum and the exploitation of radio frequency
(RF) energy in order to reduce the reliance on traditional energy sources. This
is mainly triggered by the recent advancements in microelectronics that puts
forward RF energy harvesting as a plausible technique in the near future. On
the other hand, it is suggested that the operation of a network relying on
harvested energy needs to be redesigned to allow the network to reliably
function in the long term. To this end, the aim of this survey paper is to
provide a comprehensive overview of the recent development and the challenges
regarding the operation of CRNs powered by RF energy. In addition, the
potential open issues that might be considered for the future research are also
discussed in this paper.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, Accepted in IEEE Communications Magazin
On Spectrum Sharing Between Energy Harvesting Cognitive Radio Users and Primary Users
This paper investigates the maximum secondary throughput for a rechargeable
secondary user (SU) sharing the spectrum with a primary user (PU) plugged to a
reliable power supply. The SU maintains a finite energy queue and harvests
energy from natural resources and primary radio frequency (RF) transmissions.
We propose a power allocation policy at the PU and analyze its effect on the
throughput of both the PU and SU. Furthermore, we study the impact of the
bursty arrivals at the PU on the energy harvested by the SU from RF
transmissions. Moreover, we investigate the impact of the rate of energy
harvesting from natural resources on the SU throughput. We assume fading
channels and compute exact closed-form expressions for the energy harvested by
the SU under fading. Results reveal that the proposed power allocation policy
along with the implemented RF energy harvesting at the SU enhance the
throughput of both primary and secondary links
Energy Cooperation in Battery-Free Wireless Communications with Radio Frequency Energy Harvesting
Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting techniques are becoming a potential method to power battery-free wireless networks. In RF energy harvesting communications, energy cooperation enables shaping and optimization of the energy arrivals at the energy-receiving node to improve the overall system performance. In this paper, we proposed an energy cooperation scheme that enables energy cooperation in battery-free wireless networks with RF harvesting. We first study the battery-free wireless network with RF energy harvesting then state the problem that optimizing the system performance with limited harvesting energy through new energy cooperation protocol. Finally, from the extensive simulation results, our energy cooperation protocol performs better than the original battery-free wireless network solution.特
Efficient energy management for the internet of things in smart cities
The drastic increase in urbanization over the past few years requires sustainable, efficient, and smart solutions for transportation, governance, environment, quality of life, and so on. The Internet of Things offers many sophisticated and ubiquitous applications for smart cities. The energy demand of IoT applications is increased, while IoT devices continue to grow in both numbers and requirements. Therefore, smart city solutions must have the ability to efficiently utilize energy and handle the associated challenges. Energy management is considered as a key paradigm for the realization of complex energy systems in smart cities. In this article, we present a brief overview of energy management and challenges in smart cities. We then provide a unifying framework for energy-efficient optimization and scheduling of IoT-based smart cities. We also discuss the energy harvesting in smart cities, which is a promising solution for extending the lifetime of low-power devices and its related challenges. We detail two case studies. The first one targets energy-efficient scheduling in smart homes, and the second covers wireless power transfer for IoT devices in smart cities. Simulation results for the case studies demonstrate the tremendous impact of energy-efficient scheduling optimization and wireless power transfer on the performance of IoT in smart cities
Resource Allocation for Secure Communication in Systems with Wireless Information and Power Transfer
This paper considers secure communication in a multiuser multiple-input
single-output (MISO) downlink system with simultaneous wireless information and
power transfer. We study the design of resource allocation algorithms
minimizing the total transmit power for the case when the receivers are able to
harvest energy from the radio frequency. In particular, the algorithm design is
formulated as a non-convex optimization problem which takes into account
artificial noise generation to combat potential eavesdroppers, a minimum
required signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the desired
receiver, maximum tolerable SINRs at the potential eavesdroppers, and a minimum
required power delivered to the receivers. We adopt a semidefinite programming
(SDP) relaxation approach to obtain an upper bound solution for the considered
problem. The tightness of the upper bound is revealed by examining a sufficient
condition for the global optimal solution. Inspired by the sufficient
condition, we propose two suboptimal resource allocation schemes enhancing
secure communication and facilitating efficient energy harvesting. Simulation
results demonstrate a close-to-optimal performance achieved by the proposed
suboptimal schemes and significant transmit power savings by optimization of
the artificial noise generation.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, and 1 table. Submitted for possible conference
