Big data analytics:Computational intelligence techniques and application areas
Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). We further discuss various implications of policy, protection, valuation and commercialization related to Big Data, its applications and deployment
A digest of the main insights and achievements of the project IM-CLeVeR - Intrinsically Motivated Cumulative Learning Versatile Robots
This document is directed to illustrate the main achievements and insights gained by the IM-CLeVeR project. These achievements suggest new hypothesis of research on intrinsic motivations and autonomous cumulative open-ended learning both for running new neuroscience and psychology experiments and for building future autonomously developing robots. Feature extraction based on bio-inspired model for robust emotion recognition
Emotional state identification is an important issue to achieve more natural speech interactive systems. Ideally, these systems should also be able to work in real environments in which generally exist some kind of noise. Several bio-inspired representations have been applied to artificial systems for speech processing under noise conditions. In this work, an auditory signal representation is used to obtain a novel bio-inspired set of features for emotional speech signals. These characteristics, together with other spectral and prosodic features, are used for emotion recognition under noise conditions. Neural models were trained as classifiers and results were compared to the well-known mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. Results show that using the proposed representations, it is possible to significantly improve the robustness of an emotion recognition system. The results were also validated in a speaker independent scheme and with two emotional speech corpora.Fil: Albornoz, Enrique Marcelo. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones CientÃficas y Técnicas. Data-Driven Design-by-Analogy: State of the Art and Future Directions
Design-by-Analogy (DbA) is a design methodology wherein new solutions,
opportunities or designs are generated in a target domain based on inspiration
drawn from a source domain; it can benefit designers in mitigating design
fixation and improving design ideation outcomes. Recently, the increasingly
available design databases and rapidly advancing data science and artificial
intelligence technologies have presented new opportunities for developing
data-driven methods and tools for DbA support. In this study, we survey
existing data-driven DbA studies and categorize individual studies according to
the data, methods, and applications in four categories, namely, analogy
encoding, retrieval, mapping, and evaluation. Based on both nuanced organic
review and structured analysis, this paper elucidates the state of the art of
data-driven DbA research to date and benchmarks it with the frontier of data
science and AI research to identify promising research opportunities and
directions for the field. Finally, we propose a future conceptual data-driven
DbA system that integrates all propositions.Comment: A Preprint Versio
A Survey on Bayesian Deep Learning
A comprehensive artificial intelligence system needs to not only perceive the
environment with different `senses' (e.g., seeing and hearing) but also infer
the world's conditional (or even causal) relations and corresponding
uncertainty. The past decade has seen major advances in many perception tasks
such as visual object recognition and speech recognition using deep learning
models. For higher-level inference, however, probabilistic graphical models
with their Bayesian nature are still more powerful and flexible. In recent
years, Bayesian deep learning has emerged as a unified probabilistic framework
to tightly integrate deep learning and Bayesian models. In this general
framework, the perception of text or images using deep learning can boost the
performance of higher-level inference and in turn, the feedback from the
inference process is able to enhance the perception of text or images. This
survey provides a comprehensive introduction to Bayesian deep learning and
reviews its recent applications on recommender systems, topic models, control,
etc. Besides, we also discuss the relationship and differences between Bayesian
deep learning and other related topics such as Bayesian treatment of neural
networks.Comment: To appear in ACM Computing Surveys (CSUR) 202
