Progressive image transmission over OFDM systems using multiple antennas
A Joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme for SPIHT coded image transmission over OFDM systems with spatial diversity is proposed where no feedback channel is available. By using diversity techniques, the fading effects can be dramatically decreased and we show that subchannels in OFDM systems are indeed flat Rayleigh fading channels and approach Gaussian noisy channels when the diversity gain gets large, as a result, the system performance can be improved. The simulation results are presented with different number of antennas and different multipath delay and Doppler spread
A Turbo-Detection Aided Serially Concatenated MPEG-4/TCM Videophone Transceiver
A Turbo-detection aided serially concatenated inner Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) scheme is combined with four different outer codes, namely with a Reversible Variable Length Code (RVLC), a Non-Systematic Convolutional (NSC) code a Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) code or a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code. These four outer constituent codes are comparatively studied in the context of an MPEG4 videophone transceiver. These serially concatenated schemes are also compared to a stand-alone LDPC coded MPEG4 videophone system at the same effective overall coding rate. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. It was found that the serially concatenated TCM-NSC scheme was the most attractive one in terms of coding gain and decoding complexity among all the schemes considered in the context of the MPEG4 videophone transceiver. By contrast, the serially concatenated TCM-RSC scheme was found to attain the highest iteration gain among the schemes considered
Analysis of cyclic delay diversity on DVB-H systems over spatially correlated channel
The objective of this work is to research and analyze the performance of Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD) with two transmit antenna on DVB-H systems operating in spatially correlated channel. It is shown in this paper that CDD can achieve desirable transmit diversity gain over uncorrelated channel with or without receiver diversity. However, in reality, the respective signal paths between spatially separated antennas and the mobile receiver is likely to be correlated because of insufficient antenna separation at the transmitter and the lack of scattering effect of the channel. Under this spatially correlated channel, it is apparent that CDD cannot achieve the same diversity gain as obtained under the uncorrelated channel. In this paper, a new upper bound on the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the CDD with spatial correlation of two transmit antennas is derived. The upper bound is used to study the CDD theoretical error performance and diversity gain losses over a generalized spatially correlated Rayleigh channel. This theoretical analysis is validated by the simulation of DVB-H systems with two transmit antennas and the CDD scheme. Both the theoretical and simulated results give the valuable insight that the CDD ability to perform well with a certain amount of channel correlation
DMT Optimality of LR-Aided Linear Decoders for a General Class of Channels, Lattice Designs, and System Models
The work identifies the first general, explicit, and non-random MIMO
encoder-decoder structures that guarantee optimality with respect to the
diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT), without employing a computationally
expensive maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver. Specifically, the work establishes
the DMT optimality of a class of regularized lattice decoders, and more
importantly the DMT optimality of their lattice-reduction (LR)-aided linear
counterparts. The results hold for all channel statistics, for all channel
dimensions, and most interestingly, irrespective of the particular lattice-code
applied. As a special case, it is established that the LLL-based LR-aided
linear implementation of the MMSE-GDFE lattice decoder facilitates DMT optimal
decoding of any lattice code at a worst-case complexity that grows at most
linearly in the data rate. This represents a fundamental reduction in the
decoding complexity when compared to ML decoding whose complexity is generally
exponential in rate.
The results' generality lends them applicable to a plethora of pertinent
communication scenarios such as quasi-static MIMO, MIMO-OFDM, ISI,
cooperative-relaying, and MIMO-ARQ channels, in all of which the DMT optimality
of the LR-aided linear decoder is guaranteed. The adopted approach yields
insight, and motivates further study, into joint transceiver designs with an
improved SNR gap to ML decoding.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure (3 subfigures), submitted to the IEEE Transactions

Laboratory measurement campaign of DVB-T signal with transmit delay diversity
The requirements for future DVB-T/H networks demand that broadcasters design and deploy networks that provide ubiquitous reception in challenging indoors and other obstructed situations. It is essential that such networks are designed cost-effectively and with minimized environmental impact. The EC funded project PLUTO has since its start in 2006 explored the use of diversity to improve coverage in these difficult situations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of Transmit Delay Diversity (DD) with two antennas to improve the reception of DVB-T/H systems operating in different realistic propagation conditions through a series of tests using a SPIRENT SR5500 dual channel emulator. The relationship between correlation coefficient between channels, receiver velocity and diversity gain is nvestigated. It is shown that transmit delay diversity significantly improves the quality of reception particularly in simulated fast fading mobile broadcasting applications. Secure Layered Transmission in Multicast Systems with Wireless Information and Power Transfer
This paper considers downlink multicast transmit beamforming for secure
layered transmission systems with wireless simultaneous information and power
transfer. We study the power allocation algorithm design for minimizing the
total transmit power in the presence of passive eavesdroppers and energy
harvesting receivers. The algorithm design is formulated as a non-convex
optimization problem. Our problem formulation promotes the dual use of energy
signals in providing secure communication and facilitating efficient energy
transfer. Besides, we take into account a minimum required power for energy
harvesting at the idle receivers and heterogeneous quality of service (QoS)
requirements for the multicast video receivers. In light of the intractability
of the problem, we reformulate the considered problem by replacing a non-convex
probabilistic constraint with a convex deterministic constraint. Then, a
semidefinite programming relaxation (SDR) approach is adopted to obtain an
upper solution for the reformulated problem. Subsequently, sufficient
conditions for the global optimal solution of the reformulated problem are
revealed. Furthermore, we propose two suboptimal power allocation schemes based
on the upper bound solution. Simulation results demonstrate the excellent
performance and significant transmit power savings achieved by the proposed
schemes compared to isotropic energy signal generation.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for presentation at the IEEE
