    Interactive training of advanced classifiers for mining remote sensing image archives

    Advances in satellite technology and availability of down-loaded images constantly increase the sizes of remote sensing image archives. Automatic content extraction, classification and content-based retrieval have become highly desired goals for the development of intelligent remote sensing databases. The common approach for mining these databases uses rules created by analysts. However, incorporating GIS information and human expert knowledge with digital image processing improves remote sensing image analysis. We developed a system that uses decision tree classifiers for interactive learning of land cover models and mining of image archives. Decision trees provide a promising solution for this problem because they can operate on both numerical (continuous) and categorical (discrete) data sources, and they do not require any assumptions about neither the distributions nor the independence of attribute values. This is especially important for the fusion of measurements from different sources like spectral data, DEM data and other ancillary GIS data. Furthermore, using surrogate splits provides the capability of dealing with missing data during both training and classification, and enables handling instrument malfunctions or the cases where one or more measurements do not exist for some locations. Quantitative and qualitative performance evaluation showed that decision trees provide powerful tools for modeling both pixel and region contents of images and mining of remote sensing image archives

    ARTMAP Neural Networks for Information Fusion and Data Mining: Map Production and Target Recognition Methodologies

    The Sensor Exploitation Group of MIT Lincoln Laboratory incorporated an early version of the ARTMAP neural network as the recognition engine of a hierarchical system for fusion and data mining of registered geospatial images. The Lincoln Lab system has been successfully fielded, but is limited to target I non-target identifications and does not produce whole maps. Procedures defined here extend these capabilities by means of a mapping method that learns to identify and distribute arbitrarily many target classes. This new spatial data mining system is designed particularly to cope with the highly skewed class distributions of typical mapping problems. Specification of canonical algorithms and a benchmark testbed has enabled the evaluation of candidate recognition networks as well as pre- and post-processing and feature selection options. The resulting mapping methodology sets a standard for a variety of spatial data mining tasks. In particular, training pixels are drawn from a region that is spatially distinct from the mapped region, which could feature an output class mix that is substantially different from that of the training set.     Automatic classification of oranges using image processing and data mining techniques

    Data mining is the discovery of patterns and regularities from large amounts of data using machine learning algorithms. This can be applied to object recognition using image processing techniques. In fruits and vegetables production lines, the quality assurance is done by trained people who inspect the fruits while they move in a conveyor belt, and classify them in several categories based on visual features. In this paper we present an automatic orange’s classification system, which uses visual inspection to extract features from images captured with a digital camera. With these features train several data mining algorithms which should classify the fruits in one of the three pre-established categories. The data mining algorithms used are five different decision trees (J48, Classification and Regression Tree (CART), Best First Tree, Logistic Model Tree (LMT) and Random For- est), three artificial neural networks (Multilayer Perceptron with Backpropagation, Radial Basis Function Network (RBF Network), Sequential Minimal Optimization for Support Vector Machine (SMO)) and a classification rule (1Rule).     Shape-based defect classification for Non Destructive Testing

    The aim of this work is to classify the aerospace structure defects detected by eddy current non-destructive testing. The proposed method is based on the assumption that the defect is bound to the reaction of the probe coil impedance during the test. Impedance plane analysis is used to extract a feature vector from the shape of the coil impedance in the complex plane, through the use of some geometric parameters. Shape recognition is tested with three different machine-learning based classifiers: decision trees, neural networks and Naive Bayes. The performance of the proposed detection system are measured in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision and Matthews correlation coefficient. Several experiments are performed on dataset of eddy current signal samples for aircraft structures.
