A well-posedness framework for inpainting based on coherence transport

Image inpainting is the process of touching-up damaged or unwanted portions of a picture and is an important task in image processing. For this purpose Bornemann and März [J. Math. Imaging Vis. , 28 (2007), pp. 259– 278] introduced a very efficient method called Image Inpainting Based on Coherence Transport which fills the missing region by advecting the image information along integral curves of a coherence vector field from the boundary towards the interior of the hole. The mathematical model behind this method is a first-order functional advection PDE posed on a compact domain with all inflow boundary. We show that this problem is well-posed under certain conditions

Image Inpainting by Hyperbolic Selection of Pixels for Two Dimensional Bicubic Interpolations

Image inpainting is a restoration process which has numerous applications. Restoring of scanned old images with scratches, or removing objects in images are some of inpainting applications. Different approaches have been used for implementation of inpainting algorithms. Interpolation approaches only consider one direction for this purpose. In this paper we present a new perspective to image inpainting. We consider multiple directions and apply both one-dimensional and two-dimensional bicubic interpolations. Neighboring pixels are selected in a hyperbolic formation to better preserve corner pixels. We compare our work with recent inpainting approaches to show our superior results

The aim of this paper is to describe the basic principles of inpainting methods. We take a closer look with method of continual correction for damaged area from its margins in poins and by means of level lines. Result of the work is to compare images where inpainting was applied, among images themseves as well as with original image, and evaluation which method is the best in the given situation and for the given type of images.

Image inpainting refers to the task of filling in the missing or damaged regions of an image in an undetectable manner. There are a large variety of image inpainting algorithms existing in the literature. They can broadly be grouped into two categories such as Partial Differential Equation (PDE) based algorithms and Exemplar based Texture synthesis algorithms. However no recent study has been undertaken for a comparative evaluation of these algorithms. In this paper, we are comparing two different types of image inpainting algorithms. The algorithms analyzed are Marcelo Bertalmio’s PDE based inpainting algorithm and Zhaolin Lu et al’s exemplar based Image inpainting algorithm. Both theoretical analysis and experiments have made to analyze the results of these image inpainting algorithms on the basis of both qualitative and quantitative way.
