Summaries Primary schooling is considered in policy circles to be an effective means to enhance the income and welfare of poor households, with particularly high returns for girls. Education achievement in India has, however, been slow, suggesting that the behaviour of poor households does not yet reflect the confidence of projections of high rates of return to primary education. Investigations into these factors have suggested that poverty, the opportunity cost of children's labour and entrenched social and cultural norms which give rise to inequality of caste, class and gender, are some of the factors constraining poor boys and girls from gaining access to education. Based on interviews with poor men and women in one village in southern India, this article reviews the reasons why parents do not send their children to school, and how household decision?making reflects both flexible responses to changing material circumstances in a drought?prone area, as well as rigid and non?negotiable responses to social norms. The operation of gender ideologies within household management strategies is particularly highlighted

Faculty buy-in of an institutional repository can be an uphill battle. Even as IRs become more common and more popular, some faculty may still not understand what it is or how it can benefit them. Other faculty may understand the concept of an IR but might be frustrated by the thought of it being just another administrative task added to their ever-increasing to-do list. The need to educate faculty on why the repository is important and how it can support their pursuit of tenure and promotion goals remains a challenge for most IR administrators. Do you start with the faculty or the administration? Do you try to talk to faculty one-on-one or do you go to department meetings? Can you hold open sessions in the library or other central locations on campus? This poster will address these questions and will provide a framework that you can take back to your campus and use to build rapport with faculty.https://ir.una.edu/libfacpresentation/1033/thumbnail.jp

National forests have a wealth of natural amenities that attract over 175 million recreational visitors a year. Although natural amenities draw visitors to national forests, many of the recreational activities that they engage in require built amenities, such as roads, campgrounds, boat ramps, and trails. We estimate regression models of the effect of two common built amenities—campgrounds and picnic areas—on national-forest visitation controlling for natural amenities and accounting for the endogenous relationship between visitation and built amenities. We found that campgrounds and picnic areas are significantly and positively correlated with visitation

A paper discussing my own experiences of living, and developing a career as an artist, regionally. The paper takes the misquotation "If you build it, they will come", from the Kevin Costner film 'Field of Dreams' as it's starting point - proposing the idea that by staying where you are you can, potentially, do more good than moving to where the action is

Kinetochore assembly: if you build it, they will come

Accurate chromosome segregation requires the interaction of chromosomes with the microtubules from the mitotic spindle. This interaction is mediated by the macro-molecular kinetochore complex, which assembles only at the centromeric region of each chromosome. However, how this site is specified and how assembly of the kinetochore structure is regulated in coordination with cell cycle progression remains unclear. Recent studies have begun to shed light on the mechanisms underlying assembly of this complex structure
